You're not alone with that idea at all, music is so closely linked to emotion, infact it evokes it and the same for how we remember events from our past-at times it just helps us make sense of things that perhaps weren't so great, or it gets us through crappy times. This reminds me of something I experienced when I had not slept for around 23 hours, I was on holiday and there had been a mix up with our time to be collected and driven to the airport-we had to vacate our room in time for the next guests to arrive so we were literally forced to stay awake...
