To be honest, micro managing and shaping the cultural evolution of pétri dishes with sentient beings really does sound crazy... But then again isn't that what religious texts have been screaming about for thousands of years? Creation in their image... etc.
On abductions: That's what humans do to lower species. We abduct, tag and inject them for all sorts of reasons. In short, we're trying to understand.
On micro-management: as we develop and refine technologies our tools become more and more intrusive... going where we never went before on many levels. Have we ever attempted to change the culture of foreign civilizations ?.... Are E.T. jesuits a possibility ?
If we like to interfere in foreign cultures, what would stop E.T. from interfering on earth
What will stop us from interfering when we get interstellar travel capability ? Simple contact is a paradigm shift.
