Not sure what calamity this guy and his readers are preparing for, but his "Top Ten Ways Not To Survive" post outlines some commonsense ideas for those concerned about 2012. A few that stood out were:

"Investing in gold and silver is not a bad thing, it just makes more sense to stockpile food, water-filters, first-aid supplies, ammo etc. - these are needed items – isn't this the reason you are investing in gold and silver, so you can barter for these items after the collapse?"

"The biggest mistake made by most preppers is spending a fortune on an arsenal while neglecting their food storage and other supplies."

"if you go looking for a fight there will be casualties and there's no guarantee they will be taken by your opponent. Don't go looking for a fight, stay hidden and avoid confrontation."

While, yes it will seem to come and go (hopefully with nothing dreadful happening), nevertheless, the ancient Maya with their knowledge of the cycles of time, did suggest this would mark the time when things would begin to change. Actually, I think this change is already happening on some levels (earthquakes, volcanoes, viscious weather systems throughout the globe and as humans we are beginning to think more consciously about our planet and our effects on the whole of life.) Hopefully it will mark a time of learning more about ourselves.

The Maya never marked this as a time for "change". Their calendar simply ends and starts again, as it has already. No credible Mayan scholars have come forward supporting any 2012 claims.

The Mayans marked 2012 as a time of transition from one stage to another, another cycle. Trouble is, the mayans havnt written much atall for 500 years somuch of what they say has been open to interpretation. Anyone interested try this link The Mayan Prophecy of 2012

Their calendar simply ends at 2012. It could have done so at any stage. They didn't mark 2012 as anything, it just falls on 2012 according to our calendar. Interpretations vary. To date, there is no proof Mayans predicted anything in 2012. Their calendar simply starts over as it has already done. They had long and short calendars. All calendars end.

To claim something will happen at the end of the Mayan calendar is like claiming something will happen when the odometer on your car clicks to zero after 999999.

So, the strange thing is, we follow the Gregorian calendar which is assumed to be incorrect. So does this actually mean the Mayan calendar ends on 2012? Does it mean it has already ended? Or does it mean it could potentially end much later than 2012. Now that's something interesting.

Well, its all open to interpretation. Time itself is just our interpretation of this reality. Some say everything past, present and future is all happening right now in the moment, which makes it even more mind blowing. I think prophesy arises from that place ( like a time loop of some kind). But because we are human and want to be able to see things logically and in a linear way, we then try and put dates on forseen events. Many have come up with the 2012 date but maybe its already happened or may happen later than our 2012. Its just not an exact science. Maybe the date arose as a warning to us humans 'get your act together otherwise you'll run out of time altogether'!
 
2012, is not going to change anything, humans have been the same since the early days of our ancestors. Yes we might, have got a little bit civilised since the Parthians or Sumerians but Wars are common place, greed( rich vs the poor little has changed over the years dont you think? transition to something different that is like a utopia is kind of unrealistic, humans are never alike, they have different needs and desires, so how can you ever get to a one society "we humans" working for the common good when everybody is so different? That is why different personalitys in humans can be damageing to society within any given country.2012 is a calender notting else, so if notting happens on that day dont be too disappointed with the outcome, your alive arent you?
 
Well I'm not suggesting we might become 'one society' as humans. Or that somehow we'd reach a utopian state. Nice idea but as you say unrealistic when you look around. I think that idea originates from christianity and others with the idea of being somehow rescued from our follies. It all got added to the mix, along with the media and has created huge confusion.
 
I'm afraid it's all too true.
Earthquakes, comets, asteroids, meteorites, plagues, nuclear war, global warming, a new ice age, streaming methane gas, cannibal Democrats, Nazi Republicans, hordes of diseased illegal aliens, fluoride, HAARP, chemtrails, peak oil, heathen Jewish plots of global domination(oy), depleted ozone layer, deforestation...so what are we to do?
Meh.
