As far as musical taste goes for me, I listen to: Grindcore, Goregrind, Porngrind, Brutal Death Metal, Boredcore (That's the extreme metal side out of the way), Psychedelic Trance/Ambient Trance/Dark Psychedelic Trance/Drill n' Bass/Drum n' Bass/House & a little bit of Australian Hip Hop everynow and again.
I don't think I've heard of most of those genres, but I'm especially stumped about Porngrind. Is that like 70s funky porn music but played really fast with distortion?
Well......Not exactly hahahahahaha. Grindcore is basically a genre by itself that incorporates downtuned distorted guitars, blast beat drum sections accompanied by a more 'fast-punk' styled feel. Alot of tracks contain some bizarre sampling from a variety of movies & tv shows etc; vocals are roared & screamed & are mostly completely inaudible; Vocals are often pitch shifted to add to the heaviness of the sound. Topics include politics, society, gore, death & many other topics that drive agression.
Porngrind is a subgenre of Grindcore that centrered around Pornography; ie: the lyrical content & the sampling are usually all from Porno flicks. Pornogrind is alot different in sound to grindcore because it is more 'groove laden' & not as technical as the aformentioned grindcore, strictly speaking. It is over simplistic in the over all musicianship & structuring of the song writing. Pornogrind contains few blast sections & as I mentioned earlier, is all about being groovy whilst remaining as heavy as possible. Vocals are completely indecipherable & almost always involve a pitch shifter.
As for Goregrind, well you can guess: It's lyrical themes are centrered around Gore & Pathology etc...However, whereas Pornogrind takes the simplistic groove & fundamental aspects of songwriting into it's makeup; Goregrind goes the completely opposite way. Goregrind is about going as fast & chaotic as possible, involving 'extremely low roaring' vocals, not a lot of screaming & extremely down tuned guitars to accompany the thick wall of blasting chaos. Many find Goregrind to be too much for them & thus this is a genre that is 'only for the die hards of Grind'. On another note, Goregrind is the subgenre that is most infamous for it's use of a drum machine to keep the beat, something not favoured very much apparently. Goregrind has been labelled as 'primitive, bland, uncreative' crap by many, aswell as 'unoriginal' in songwriting, but this is due to the use of a drum machine i'm certain.
Brutal Death Metal is the heaviest & most extreme genre of all 'Death' metal subgenres. This is the sound of extremely talented musicians, generally speaking, who wish to push the absolute boundaries of musicianship & technicality. The song structures usually contain no chorus (which, I forgot to mention, Grindcore usually bases itself around), & are usually broken right down to allow more of a 'mosh & slam' feel. The drums most often then not, contain some of the fastest blast beat sections & breaks (which is what Brutal Death Metal centres itself around)
ever; the use of the 'gravity blast' (which is a one handed snare roll) has allowed drummers to take their technicality up a few notches; tom rolls & triplet kicks are incorporated, just so you get a feel that this genre means business in terms of getting as 'brutal' as possible. The double kick usage within B.D.M is outrageously technical & fast as humanly possible. The vocals are always inaudible (exept for maybe 'Sevared Saviour') & the musicians attempt to get lower, more guttural & deeper each release. The drums are usually quite high in the mix which gives the guitars a place to 'level out' the darkness & macabreness of the soundscape.
B.D.M has been labelled 'boring & tastless', personally this is my favourite genre of extreme metal yet. The negative labels given to Brutal Death Metal stem around the fact that in the 14 years of it's existance, not many bands have really stood out; it should also be noted that many people dislike the mentality of BDM bands as each release is a battle of the brutal to see how much more heavier & technical one can get. So it's a competitive genre of music indeed.
Then there's Technical Brutal Death Metal (not kidding, it's a genre of BDM)....& the goal of this genre is to be as technical as humanly possible with your fretboard, drums & time signatures (as they are usually all over the place). This particular genre does contain alot of solo's wheras BDM does not have many mainly. This is the genre I sit in awe when listening and think 'How the hell do they remember all of this'? It's so damn amazing to listen to.
Psytrance is the Psychedelic version of what you would call 'Trance music'. Tracks revolve around 8-10 minutes in duration on average. The music contains all kind of dark sound effects that are cosmic & completely foreign to the human ear drum; that is why I LOVE this music. Most sounds are put through modulaters, phasers, & whatnot. The feel of Psytrance aswell as the others I mentioned, is to be progressive with the music, whilst still containing the high energy concept.
Now that is enough writing for me, please exuse me for such a long reply, I hope it helps aid your understanding of those genres.
