Musical Interests

For those who like crazy music, check out Mr. Bungle. A band with Faith No More's lead singer in it.

Faith No More is a fav of mine I didn't mention btw.

I like them too...saw them live once, and man, were they boring!

As far as musical instruments, I'm a synthesist and guitar wanker. I grew up with funky electric organs, the ones with the one-key magic chord.

So you must have heard of Rick Wakeman's, "Journey to the Centre of the Earth". Remember that video special in the 70's? Man, I used to listen to that album to death when I was a little kid.

My music interests can be seen/heard on www.last.fm , under user name "uber7".

Tommyball,

THANK YOU for mentioning Muse. I hadn't heard of them, but last year, I heard one of their songs somewhere and absolutely loved it, but never heard the name of the band mentioned, which drove me crazy. In poking around their website, I found that song - it's "Time is Running Out", from Absolution. I am so very thrilled, I just ordered that CD and the newer one. I'm gonna take a listen to some of those other bands you mention - never heard The Killers or Secret Machines.

Good stuff! Thanks again...

Muse is awesome.

I think they're off in Europe for the time being, but definitely try to catch them if you can. I saw them twice this year and their live shows are amazing. Matt Bellamy, the vocalist, guitarist and UFO and Conspiracy fan (take a listen to "Exo-Politics" off of Black Holes & Revelations), is an unbelievable musician. He has a Manson guitar into which he's installed a KAOSS pad that he uses to create some of the most incredible guitar solos I've ever heard. Check out this
of "Time is Running Out."

The Killers just have some great no-frills rock songs. Secret Machines were lauded as a modern reincarnation of early 70's Floyd meets Zeppelin, but unfortunately the guitarist quit and they're in a bit of limbo right now.

Collective Soul is one of those great bands that somehow gets overlooked again and again as time goes on...

Oh, and I agree with you that outside of Cream (and I'd have to add Derek & the Dominoes), Clapton is terrible.

I'm planning on going to the X-Conference this weekend. Judging by this thread we should get Stephen Bassett to let a Paracast group set up a DJ Booth or Jam Band. Maybe some spooky synth lines while Dr. Greer is talking? :D

I like the famous uncredited Clapton solo on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." He went downhill, mostly, after that and taking George Harrison's wife with him :)

Boy Gene, you are old school! But that solo was tremendous!

Of course!

Awesome solo. Thanks for catching my omission.:D

I've always found it hard to believe that out of all the women in the world, a Beatle and a guitar god found themselves after the same one. Whatever, it inspired some great music.

I feel compelled to mention a band called Star One (same guy as is responsible for Ayreon, Arjen Lucassen). Prog-metal people will love this, and all the songs are about scifi movies and TV shows. Look, I know how that sounds, but you gotta trust me on this. I went halfsies with a guy on the CD set just cuz I thought it would be funny. But the music is really, really good.

Beyond that, anybody listening to Elliot Smith? Very Beatle-esque. Good with coffee in the morning.

A cool new band I been listening to is called "Wolfmother". Stupid name, but pretty cool music if you like the Cream, Hendrix, Sabbath, perhaps a harder Stones kinda sound.

Here's a song and vid featurin the Jackass guys.

Don't bother embedding it Gene, it won't let you play it:)

Yes Wolfmother is really good, I actually just DJed for their show when they came through town. I met the singer and he looks like an elf, you'd never guess that he has such a crazy Ozzy voice!

I watched the vid, and I thought "ELO" Jeff Lynne...but the voice was def different! That song reminded me a little of the Killers.

My tastes are hugely eclectic. A band might do one song I totally love, then never do another so I rarely find entire CDs that I like. Of course, you've gotta love the Beatles. Other great older groups are: Cream, Blind Faith, Blue Cheer and ELO. I also like Moby, Everlast, Flaming Lips and some Depeche Mode; lots of Native American music and some Reggae and Dub; and certain one-hit-wonders and stuff I come across in TV and movies. Like a current favorite is "Goodbye Horses," by Q Lazzarus. (from Silence of the Lambs) Also "Where is my mind?" by the Pixies (from the 4400). Leonard Cohen is pretty good sometimes. And of course, "Tainted Love," by Soft Cell is all time great.

As for making music, I'm jealous of all you guys. I own a piano, but twinkle twinkle little star is about my speed.

I'm with ya on the Native Music, Aponi..."Starwalker" by Buffy Sainte-Marie makes me go insane! I was VERY into Red Thunder and Robert Mirabal at one time. I was lucky enough to catch Mirabal's concert, Music From the Painted Cave...WOW! too bad he's seemed to have faded into obscurity. Who are some of your fav. Native bands?

PS: Lovely name btw

I can't handle Mr Bungle....& I've never liked anything Mike Patton has done outside of Faith No More. Just my thoughts.

As far as musical taste goes for me, I listen to: Grindcore, Goregrind, Porngrind, Brutal Death Metal, Boredcore (That's the extreme metal side out of the way), Psychedelic Trance/Ambient Trance/Dark Psychedelic Trance/Drill n' Bass/Drum n' Bass/House & a little bit of Australian Hip Hop everynow and again.

Psytrance is the music of the universe, the galaxies. I can't play it without entering into a surrendering state of utter bliss, it resonates so well with me & always fits right into my research on E.B.E's & whatever else is 'Paranormal'.

Also I listen to alot of Ambient noise, the kind thats fit for kicking back & closing your eyes, meditating etc....Takes me into a completely different reality that I always like to say is my home.

Goody.

I don't think I've heard of most of those genres, but I'm especially stumped about Porngrind. Is that like 70s funky porn music but played really fast with distortion?

I didn't like Bungle at first. Well I thought some of it was funny. It is very weird, and might be like an acquired taste.

Well......Not exactly hahahahahaha. Grindcore is basically a genre by itself that incorporates downtuned distorted guitars, blast beat drum sections accompanied by a more 'fast-punk' styled feel. Alot of tracks contain some bizarre sampling from a variety of movies & tv shows etc; vocals are roared & screamed & are mostly completely inaudible; Vocals are often pitch shifted to add to the heaviness of the sound. Topics include politics, society, gore, death & many other topics that drive agression.

Porngrind is a subgenre of Grindcore that centrered around Pornography; ie: the lyrical content & the sampling are usually all from Porno flicks. Pornogrind is alot different in sound to grindcore because it is more 'groove laden' & not as technical as the aformentioned grindcore, strictly speaking. It is over simplistic in the over all musicianship & structuring of the song writing. Pornogrind contains few blast sections & as I mentioned earlier, is all about being groovy whilst remaining as heavy as possible. Vocals are completely indecipherable & almost always involve a pitch shifter.

As for Goregrind, well you can guess: It's lyrical themes are centrered around Gore & Pathology etc...However, whereas Pornogrind takes the simplistic groove & fundamental aspects of songwriting into it's makeup; Goregrind goes the completely opposite way. Goregrind is about going as fast & chaotic as possible, involving 'extremely low roaring' vocals, not a lot of screaming & extremely down tuned guitars to accompany the thick wall of blasting chaos. Many find Goregrind to be too much for them & thus this is a genre that is 'only for the die hards of Grind'. On another note, Goregrind is the subgenre that is most infamous for it's use of a drum machine to keep the beat, something not favoured very much apparently. Goregrind has been labelled as 'primitive, bland, uncreative' crap by many, aswell as 'unoriginal' in songwriting, but this is due to the use of a drum machine i'm certain.

Brutal Death Metal is the heaviest & most extreme genre of all 'Death' metal subgenres. This is the sound of extremely talented musicians, generally speaking, who wish to push the absolute boundaries of musicianship & technicality. The song structures usually contain no chorus (which, I forgot to mention, Grindcore usually bases itself around), & are usually broken right down to allow more of a 'mosh & slam' feel. The drums most often then not, contain some of the fastest blast beat sections & breaks (which is what Brutal Death Metal centres itself around)
ever; the use of the 'gravity blast' (which is a one handed snare roll) has allowed drummers to take their technicality up a few notches; tom rolls & triplet kicks are incorporated, just so you get a feel that this genre means business in terms of getting as 'brutal' as possible. The double kick usage within B.D.M is outrageously technical & fast as humanly possible. The vocals are always inaudible (exept for maybe 'Sevared Saviour') & the musicians attempt to get lower, more guttural & deeper each release. The drums are usually quite high in the mix which gives the guitars a place to 'level out' the darkness & macabreness of the soundscape.
B.D.M has been labelled 'boring & tastless', personally this is my favourite genre of extreme metal yet. The negative labels given to Brutal Death Metal stem around the fact that in the 14 years of it's existance, not many bands have really stood out; it should also be noted that many people dislike the mentality of BDM bands as each release is a battle of the brutal to see how much more heavier & technical one can get. So it's a competitive genre of music indeed.

Then there's Technical Brutal Death Metal (not kidding, it's a genre of BDM)....& the goal of this genre is to be as technical as humanly possible with your fretboard, drums & time signatures (as they are usually all over the place). This particular genre does contain alot of solo's wheras BDM does not have many mainly. This is the genre I sit in awe when listening and think 'How the hell do they remember all of this'? It's so damn amazing to listen to.

Psytrance is the Psychedelic version of what you would call 'Trance music'. Tracks revolve around 8-10 minutes in duration on average. The music contains all kind of dark sound effects that are cosmic & completely foreign to the human ear drum; that is why I LOVE this music. Most sounds are put through modulaters, phasers, & whatnot. The feel of Psytrance aswell as the others I mentioned, is to be progressive with the music, whilst still containing the high energy concept.

Now that is enough writing for me, please exuse me for such a long reply, I hope it helps aid your understanding of those genres.

Goody.
