Musical Interests

Goody

Sailor Of Mind & Time
Is exactly what the title suggests; What kind of music do you listen to? Who are some of your favourite artists? What is your least favourite genre/artist?

Oh...& if you play an instrument, list it too!

Goody.

What I dislike is too long to list. But something worth mentioning is, I hate American Idol type mentalities.

Some all time favs, but not what I necessarily listen to daily these days are. Zeppelin, Sabbath, Tea Party (big in Canada, not US), Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Queens of the Stone Age, Ozzy, Badlands, some of Grand Funk, some of Manic Street Preachers, Robert Plant, Aerosmith, Eleven list goes on a bit.

Currently been listening to Chris Cornel, Korn, Queens of the Stone Age, some Audioslave, Toadies, Masters of Reality, some Radiohead, list goes on a bit.

I play guitar, bass, drums, a little keyboard. I might take up vocals in the future since I'm tired of not being able to find any decent vocalists. People either rap or sound like cookie monster.

I listen to just about anything. My favs are the Dixie Dregs, Dream Theater, Rainbow, Rik Emmett, Steve Morse, Judas Priest, Joe Satriani, Earl Klugh, Larry Carlton, Paganini, Liszt, and I know I'm forgetting more cuz I'm exhausted. But, Iron Maiden, thats *the* band for me, since like, 1980. I love Metal, but not the hair metal crap or this de-evolved stuff of today.

I've played guitar since I was 9 and thats probably influenced most of what I listen to.

I started guitar seriously when I was 9 or 10. I've always liked it though, and had a cheapo toyish acoustic I tried to play when like 2-3. I started drums when I was 3, thanks to my dad having a kit and a stool that could go real low. Prince's Purple Rain album set me on the path of guitar being my main instrument. I then went on to check out metal and fell in love with some of it.

Maiden was really great live when I saw them. Stranger in the Strange land, or the album with Seven something in the title was the tour I think. Album cover had a lot of blue color in it I think. Late eighties. I mentioned this to ya before I think. Priest was also very good. I enjoyed it more than I thought. I saw them during Turbo Love or whatever album that was off of. Rob Halford has some pretty good solo stuff. Not sure you'll like it though.

I'm listening to Kyuss atm.

Now THIS is a juicy thread. Oh yeah, baby, music is my true obsession.

So as far as music goes, I think that Ritzmann is a metalhead freak. Damned distorted guitars, whatsa matter with ya, Ritzmann, acoustic strings not good enough for ya?

I remember listening to Iron Maiden back in the early eighties, though I preferred Judas Priest, in terms of songs and the guitar tone. And Deep Purple, man, that Live in Japan album just tore my mind up. Electric guitar has always had a strong pull on my musical tastes.

It all started with The Beatles, and the Yellow Submarine movie. I also grew up in a household where there was lots of classical music - Mozart, Bach & Beethoven - as well as soundtracks. I adore the soundtrack to the movie "The Ten Commandments", as well as "Exodus". Bernard Hermann is a hero - think Hitchcock, or Citizen Kane.

OK, here's a totally incomplete list of bands/musicians I listen to often, besides my absolute favorites, Radiohead:

The Posies, Sigur Ros, Chris Whitley (an old friend, may he Rest in Peace), Jimi Hendrix, Porcupine Tree, Butthole Surfers, Pixies, Meat Puppets, Emerson Lake & Palmer, The Black Keys, Zep, Sabbath, first two solo Ozzy albums, Alan Parsons, R. L. Burnside, Alan Holdsworth, Zappa, Neil Young, Yes, John Zorn, Larry Fast/Synergy, Tomita, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Billie Holiday, old Elton John, and a bunch of other stuff that evades me at the moment.

As far as musical instruments, I'm a synthesist and guitar wanker. I grew up with funky electric organs, the ones with the one-key magic chord. I started programming analog synths (Arp 2600) at the age of 13, and have been noodling on electric guitar since the same age. I become the second Electro-Harmonix dealer in Venezuela at 15, and I currently have a somewhat extensive collection of pedals and other weird audio toyz. I LOVE Ableton Live, am enthralled with MetaSynth, adore Absynth, could not live without PSP Vintage Warmer and the Wave Arts MasterVerb and TrackPlug plugins. My main guitars are a PRS CE24, a Variax 300 (which I scored for $300, most versatile guitar in the universe), and a Taylor 414CE acoustic. I also own an amazing, one-of-a-kind electric guitar from a Canadian madman luthier, here it is. Amazing instrument.

You like Ableton? Me too, I make music with it sans a keyboard right now. It's just me and that roll editor grid, with lots of plugins.

When/if I switch to Mac I would love to try Logic. Being a Mac person I am surprised you don't prefer that over Ableton. Is there a reason?

Ah cmon Dave, you gotta like Jake E. Lee man! Randy's great of course. First two solo ones Diary and Blizz(not the live album with Gillis) are big favs.

Here's some Kermit doing Creep. Have this as your opening song maybe? I kid-I kid, kinda.

Oh, speaking of Creep, I recently found out about a Korn unplugged in which they did Creep. I was surprised they somewhat pulled it off. Notice I said somewhat please.

I'm glad Goody made this thread, since Jeff and David mentioned some artists I'm not familiar with. I'm starving for good music. I've finally gotten old in which I think most new music sux.

Anyway, no fair Goody. Your turn. Tell what you are into.

Logic's interface is anything but logical. Live supports VST as well as AU plugins, and is oriented towards getting quick results. It's not like I care about the platform - Mac, Windows, when it comes to doing stuff, pick the right tool, the hell with the OS.

Creep is the single worst Radiohead song in existence. Seriously - it's overplayed, and compared with ANY track on The Bends, OK Computer (with the exception of Fitter, Happier) or Hail to the Thief, it's anemic. I hear that the members of the band share the sentiment, they almost NEVER play it live, thank goodness.

Ok where do I begin...

Recording system:

Adobe Audition 2.0 I started with Cool Edit Pro and since Adobe bought them I have had no reason to change.
(Of course my next machine is going to be a Mac with ProTools)

For storage I use a Seagate 160 gig USB external hard drive.

For CD and DVD burning I use a Sony USB external DVD burner

Interfaces:

M-Audio 410 Firewire
Alesis Multimix 16 Fire wire. I bought this just to be able to mic up my drummer without being limited to 4 inputs.

Monitoring and Mixing:

Behringer MX2642. Does the job but for being 10 years old it is beginning to show signs of age.

Monitoring Amps and Speakers:
Alesis RA-150 that powers my JBL 4311B's. I use these for mid field
monitoring. And even though they are over 25 years old I don't care. I have never heard anything that I can afford sound better.

Furman headphone amp that also powers my Yamaha NS-10M near field monitors. There is a pair of these in every photo or every studio I have ever visited.

Keyboards and MIDI:

1950 Hammond C2 organ with Trek II added. Also I get the percussion emulation from a Behringer Bass V-Amp pro. Not bad sounding if I do say so myself.

1980 Fender Rhodes 88.

Roland JV-80 with the Voice Crystal card collection
Roland XP-10 a cheapie but it does what I need it to do,
Roland SH-101 Coveted by many a person.
Studiologic SL-990 88 key Semi-weighted Midi controller that runs:
1. Kurzweil MicorPiano synthmodule
2. M-Audio Mini Moog (minimonsta)
3. M-Audio Mellotron (M-Tron)
4. M-Audio Arp Oddessy (I forget what they call it).

The M-Audio stuff is on my laptop so I can take it out live.

Alesis Midi drumpad that controls the synths but also controls the:

Alesis SR-16 Drum machine
Roland TR-505 Drum machine ( I use this mainly for click tracks).

Guitars and Strings:

Gibson SG black
Fender Stratocaster
Fender Telecaster with Rio Grande pickups
Fender Jazz Bass with Bartolini pickups
Gretsch Silver Jet
Epiphone Casino
Rickenbacker 1963 Reissue 360/12 (think George Harrison and Hard Days Night)
Oahu Lap Steel circa 1950's
Custom built Ovation Legend. I wanted a white finish and Ovation kindly found this model for me. It was being built for country star Eddie Rabbit and since he already had 2 of them he did not need a third so I ended up with it.
Martin DX-1. Yes, another cheapie but it sounds like a Martin and that is what I wanted.
Epiphone PR-350 Not bad for a cheap acoustic. Especially as it has aged a bit.
Alvarez silver anniversary 12 string. Gorgeous sounding. I installed a Fishman bridge pickup in it and it works great.
Loenzo student model classical. Sounds ok to me.

Amps.

Ampeg VT-40 (my favorite amp)
Marshall Valvestate 65.
Fender Bassman 10
Vox Pathfinder 15
Original Pignose (given to me as a birthday present a long time ago).

Ok. I have a bunch of rackmount effects and compressors and pre-amps and a lot of stomp boxes. Direct boxes and tuners and percussion stuff coming out of my butt. The one tuner I love is an old Conn Strobe Tuner that is still dead on accurate. I still use it when I am setting up intonation on guitars.

Mics:

Shure SM-57's (2)
AKG D-1000E's (2)
Rode NT-1
CAD GXL-2200
Joe Meek JM-27
MXL 990
Audio Technica Drum pack (set of 4)
Audio Technica Headset mic
Radio Shack PZM Built by Crown I do believe. I changed the wiring so it could be phantom powered and added better cables. It works great as a room mic. Especially on drums to pick up cymbals.
And a Behringer flat response mic to real time a room.

Headphones by AKG, Sennheiser, and Yamaha.

And cords and stands and cables and all kinds of other crap.

This is what I do when I am not at work or doing stuff around the house or taking care of the pets. I rarely go anywhere and my wife always knows where to find me. Although a cool show I saw back in April was Alan Holdsworth. He and I were actually having a cigarette between sets outside the venue. A really cool guy.

Now my music:

YES - man I just love that band. Especially Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman
The Beatles - They should be first and are first but I just happened to type them second.
The Stones - That 1969 to 1972 period is the best you could ever ask for.
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer - Ok, what's wrong with stabbing a Hammond with a butcher knife?
Daniel Johnston - My dear friend. I love him dearly. Even though he caused his dad to crash an airplane. I can also gloat over the fact that I helped him write his first songs.
Patti Smith - Even at 60 she is so fucking good live that your a fool if you don't see her.
John Coltrane - I use him as an influence in my soloing. What a musician.
Martin Taylor - One of the best jazz guitarist alive. And one of the nicest guys you could ever want to meet.
Joe Negri - Not bad when handy man Negri from Mr. Rogers recognizes you when you run into him.
Kate Bush - I don't know what to have an orgasm first over when it comes to her. The fact that she is hot or the fact she is an excellent songwriter.

Ok...enough blathering for now.

After all this, I'm reluctant to state that my musical instrument collection is minimal. All that's left right now is a Yamaha keyboard, seldom used, and my son's black Fender Strat and, of course, his violin. He doesn't use either right now, largely because his career paths have strayed towards writing rather than music. But he might pursue them again some day soon.

Me? Well, I might just go back to that guitar, since the instrument has been untouched for a while.

Musical tastes? Usual 1960s-1970s Classic rock: The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, etc.

But I also grew up hearing the 1950s crooners that my late brother preferred.

I wasn't trying to brag in all honesty. I just got on a roll. It's my passion.
Ever since I was little and saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan it's all I ever wanted to do but could never afford to have a studio until the advent of the personal computer age. I originally started out with a Fostex x-15 cassette 4 track recorder. The list above is over 15 years of piece at a time growth. Maybe it is too much. The only thing I really miss is my Gibson guitar collection that, thanks to my first wife (may she rest in peace), I no longer have.

Great thread!

I have been listening to Velvet Revolver, lately (although i was never a Gn'R fan) but i also listen to Deep Purple, Seether, Nickelback, Metallica, Moody Blues, Foghat, Grinspoon, Cold Chisel, ACDC, The Angels and Wolfmother.

I have been playing Bass Guitar in bands for 20 years in and around my hometown and traveled tens of thousands of kilometres doing that which i love.

My Bass Rig is a Gallien Krueger 1001RB into a GK 410 SBX Quad and i also use
a Behringer 2X10 box for practising.
I have an Ernie Ball MusicMan Stingray 4 string and a G&L SB-1 4 string.

Two very nice axes!

I'm stoked that this thread has become of importance, I considered everyone must like music & that it'd be very nice to have some discussion regarding musical interests & instruments/gear etc...

I got familiar with the roots of guitar playing around 8 years ago, so when I was 11yo by playing classical guitar; which helped to ground my ability as it taught me alot about hand positionings & the validness of having strong fingers. Earlier before the guitar was the clarinet...however, I gave that up ages ago :D.

I own an Australian made stock standard Ashton guitar & a real generic FX pedal that has been out of performance for too long (thats why I didn't mention it's name/model etc).

Most of the music I create is powered by a drum machine which I program in FLSTUDIO 4.0, I use Acid Pro 5 to master & produce my guitars, vocals, bass etc...

I also play bass & drums & do vocals for a few bands I play in which are currently inactive, but will pick up as soon as we can land more gigs.

If I was to name half of the 'extreme metal' bands I love i'd be banned off of these forums; so we'll just leave it by saying Cannibal Corpse are shite & have nothing on some of the other acts I get into.

What I CAN tell you is that i'm a huge Psytrance/dark psy/psy chill/drill n' bass/drum n' bass fanatic. ;)

Enjoy this thread,

Goody.

Ondafritz... that's a heavy list!

I won't even try to do a similar one here... it'll take up pages! LOL!

Some other bands/musicians I really like, that I didn't include in the previous post:

Todd Rundgren/Utopia (I've attended many a wild party at Rundgren's former Marin county home, good, good times), Stevie Ray Vaughn, Prince, Cream (otherwise, I absolutely DETEST Clapton), PM Dawn, King Missile, Cake, Midget Handjob (the album: Midnight Snack Break at the Poodle Factory, and NO, I am not making this up, click on the link, I love this album), King's X, Beck, Diamanda Galas, and Jeff Ritzmann's punk band, JesusNiggahChunk.

:)

Oh dude, I'm sure of it. We are gear sluts! Case in point: A few weeks ago I spent a considerable amount of money for an authentic African gourd shaker. When I showed it to my wife and she said "HOW MUCH????" is was hoping for an alien abduction pronto!
