The Need-to-Know Petition needs a minimum of 25,000 signatures on the White House "We, the People" website within 30 days (time's out on December 30). If that happens, then the Obama Administration will respond to it, publicly.
People say it's too hard to get 25,000 signatures. The number should be lower or the time should be longer, that kind of thing.
Yet if we can't get 25,000 signatures in 30 days, then we aren't really much of a social movement, are we? OWS protestors are getting pepper-sprayed but we can't be bothered to spend five minutes figuring out how to sign a petition on a website?
Imagine we succeed. Can you picture presidential candidates put on the spot about what all those pilots, astronauts and cops have seen flying around in the skies? That won't be the end of anything, but it might just be the beginning of something.

Yes, can you imagine the government and military forced to confess that they have no control over the skies whatsoever? Can you imagine when the world population suddenly is made to believe that non-human creatures from other worlds have free reign over our world? Can you think of what it might be like as governmental officials are forced to admit that they have no clue as to the motivations and objectives of these creatures as they point out it wouldn't matter if we did as there is nothing that can be done to stop them anyway? Yeah, that's a wonderful world to wake up to. Glory! Sheeesh. Or perhaps even worse, we are told some light and love message of benevolent aliens who are here to aid us in our evolution as the natural collapse of human civilization, philosophy, and religion occurs in the wake of being exposed to their civilization, philosophy, and religions? Yeah, that doesn't seem much better. I guess we're hoping for a Star Trek moment huh? Don't bet on it.

You do realize that this has been done before... Not sure why we'd do it again when the results will be the same.

Nothing will change, even if a UFO lands on the White House lawn.

@Xylo, persistence and formula refinements might just crack open the door just a bit more every time.

Having one of these succeed every month (more than 25k) for a year should catch the eye of some opportunistic politician. Not to mention that it's a great way to promote yourself as a ufologist (and your books).

I can't wait to read the Kean petition... The Friedman petition... The Jacques Vallee petition.... The paracast petition.... Etc lol ;)

I think that the only way that this subject will be taken seriously is if the doe-eyed believers and the scam artists are disenfranchised from it; and if those who are serious about the phenomena are promoted...and the press begins to take the topic seriously. Any petition that is signed can be quickly dismissed. And it will be dismissed, in short order.

I don't mean to be a nay-sayer, but books like Leslie Kean's are a good step towards legitimizing this subject in the eyes of the mass media and once legitimized, perhaps some pressure can be exerted politically. As for now, the major press still thinks that this subject is a wonderful source of jocularity and that the field is populated only with drunk hillbillies named Bubba.

Yeah, unfortunately the doe-eyed believers and scam artists are steeped well within the phenomena. The scam artists can be dealt with "locally" as in within the field, but the religions that spring up due to UFO's and proposed alien contact will never be stopped.....any more than Pontious Pilot put an end to the worshiping of Jesus Christ. People will believe what they believe, and it's strong enough that we're actually touching on UFO religions in my Anthropology class, and yes, it's at Indiana University, an accredited college so no, it's not a community college that focuses on stupid stuff. In other words, "someone" is taking UFO's and the religions that spring up from them, a bit seriously.

You hit it on the nose !

I re-read your post and had an Edgar Mitchell moment lol.

In essence, its all a question of timing. Until we can interact at par with any civilization not from this earth, there should be no attempt to reach out or divulge any external entity... unless you want to merge with an external race.

The moment we acknowledge higher sentience we become cultural slaves to these entities, we lose our identity as humans and worse of all we transfer the responsibility of our evolution to some beings with wildly different agendas. Its the discovery of the Americas all over again, but this time we are the aboriginals ;)

Where do we go from here ?

One universal truth is that information is power. Whoever controls this kind of information holds the destiny of the entire human race.

Can we afford to roll the dice to become part of a benevolent ET galactic community or find out that we are a mediocre experiment of a rogue ET civilization ? ... even worse a spare organ bank.
