Homeopathy's Effectiveness

Just in case any one here spends any money on homeopathic medication, you should save your cash:

Homeopathy's Ineffectiveness Saves Lives : Discovery News

Here's a cut and paste of the article:

Hundreds of people owe their lives to the fact that homeopathy is completely ineffective. This past weekend, groups of people around the world participated in an event that, at first glance, may seem sinister or even cult-like.
They gathered in 25 countries (in an event known as "The 10:23 Campaign") and took massive overdoses of medication -- not to harm themselves, but to prove a point. No one suffered ill effects because the medications were homeopathic, have no active ingredients, and are therefore worthless. Real drugs of proven efficacy can be dangerous or lethal in high enough doses; homeopathic remedies cannot.
This is not the first time that someone has tried to overdose on homeopathic medications. In January 2010 Alexa Ray Joel (daughter of Billy Joel) tried to overdose on a homeopathic medication in an apparent suicide attempt. She, also, was just fine.
UK Government Study: Homeopathy Worthless
Skeptical and scientific organizations have long decried ineffective and alternative medicines. D.J. Grothe, president of the James Randi Educational Foundation which participated in the event, said he hoped to educate the public about homeopathy.
"We believe consumers deserve the truth about homeopathic products," he told Discovery News. "Most have no active ingredients whatsoever, they've been proven not to work any better than plain water or sugar pills, and they aren't tested or approved by any U.S. health agency. Using fake medicine to treat real health problems can be dangerous. When parents need something to help their child's cough or break a fever, they trust that what they get from their drugstore is real medicine."
Homeopathy was invented around 1796 by a doctor named Samuel Hahnemann. He believed that homeopathic medicines become more effective the more they are diluted. Homeopathic solutions are often so literally watered-down that they don't contain a single molecule of the original medicine or substance: the patient is drinking nothing but water. Homeopathic medicines have not been shown to work better than placebos, yet many people use and endorse homeopathy.
Cow Dung, Urine as Medicine?
Last year the British Science and Technology Select Committee conducted a comprehensive study into whether homeopathy has any scientific validity. The report was devastating: "homeopathy is not efficacious, and explanations for why homeopathy would work are scientifically implausible." Even professional homeopathic practitioners admitted that basic claims made about homeopathy have never been tested nor proven.
Homeopathic practitioners insist that homeopathy works, and that anyone who says otherwise is either misinformed or secretly lobbying for the pharmaceutical industry (never mind that homeopathic remedies are a half-billion-dollar industry).
You can test the homeopathic principle yourself easily at home: The next time you reach for a pain reliever, instead of swallowing the pill, crush it, pick out a few of the smaller crumbs of medicine, and take those. According to homeopathy, the less you take of the medicine, the more effective it will be.
Consumers, of course, have the right to choose remedies that don't work, and manufacturers of homeopathic products can remain in business as long as they admit on the label that "This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease." Caveat emptor.

i suspect thousands more people have died from vaccines and modern medicine than homeopathic medication.

i suspect thousands more people have died from vaccines and modern medicine than homeopathic medication.

Millions more lives have been saved by vaccines and modern medicine than from drinking vials of water and taking sugar pills.

Seriously, support for homeopathy against modern medicine is dangerous.

What's the paranormal angle here?

Anyhoo, stats from graduate Psychopathology class: pharmacueticals kill more people than illegal drugs, guns and automobile-related deaths per year. And that's not even getting into iatriogenic related deaths...Yes, they're saving lives, and lots of 'em, but plenty of room for improvement there.

Whilst I don't advocate the non use of modern pharmaceuticals a great deal of care should be afforded to the taking of them. Below is a list of oft used medications and their side affects.

8 Pharmaceuticals With Worse Side Effects Than the Ailments They Treat

There comes a time in everyone's life when they're prescribed a drug, but unless you have no choice in the decision, you might want to consider whether or not the medicine's benefits outweigh the potential side effects. Here are eight examples of prescription drugs* that might not be worth the hassle, based on their warning labels.

Ambien
Purpose: To aid in sleeping.
Side Effects: Sleepdriving and amnesia:
"Sleepwalking, and eating or driving while not fully awake, with amnesia for the event, have been reported. If you experience any of these behaviors contact your provider immediately."

Enbrel
Purpose: To control arthritis and clear up psoriasis.
Side Effects: Tuberculosis and multiple sclerosis:
"Serious infections have happened in patients taking ENBREL. These infections include tuberculosis (TB) and infections caused by viruses, fungi, or bacteria that have spread throughout the body...Serious nervous system disorders, such as multiple sclerosis, seizures, or inflammation of the nerves of the eyes have been reported. There have been rare reports of serious blood disorders (some fatal)."

Chantix
Purpose: To help you quit smoking.
Side Effects: Suicide:
"Some patients have reported changes in behavior, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal thoughts or actions when attempting to quit smoking while taking CHANTIX or after stopping CHANTIX."

Avandia
Purpose: To control blood sugar in diabetics.
Side Effects: Bone fractures, heart failure and pregnancy:
"AVANDIA can cause or worsen heart failure...Women taking AVANDIA should know that AVANDIA may increase the risk of pregnancy. More fractures have been observed in women taking AVANDIA. Other possible side effects of AVANDIA include anemia and hypoglycemia."

Mirapex
Purpose: To help treat restless leg syndrome.
Side Effects: Narcolepsy and hallucinations:
"MIRAPEX may cause you to fall asleep without any warning, even while doing normal daily activities, such as driving. When taking MIRAPEX, hallucinations may occur and sometimes you may feel dizzy, sweaty or nauseated upon standing up." Also linked to amnesia and gambling addiction.

Accutane
Purpose: To treat severe acne.
Side Effects: Birth defects and suicide:
"There is an extremely high risk that severe birth defects will result if pregnancy occurs while taking ACCUTANE in any amount, even for short periods of time...There is an increased risk of spontaneous abortion, and premature births have been reported...The patient will be counseled to avoid pregnancy by using two forms of contraception simultaneously and continuously one month before, during, and one month after isotretinoin therapy, unless the patient commits to continuous abstinence...ACCUTANE may cause depression, psychosis and, rarely, suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, suicide, and aggressive and/or violent behaviors."

Celebrex
Purpose: To treat arthritis.
Side Effects: Death:
"CELEBREX may increase the chance of a heart attack or stroke that can lead to death...Serious skin reactions or stomach and intestine problems, such as bleeding and ulcers, can occur without warning and my cause death."

Raptiva
Purpose: To treat psoriasis.
Side Effects: Decreased immune system, arthritis and WORSE psoriasis:
"RAPTIVA can decrease the activity of your immune system to fight infections. People using RAPTIVA may have an increased chance of getting serious infections. Some infections in people using RAPTIVA have become serious and in rare cases these have led to hospitalization or death. RAPTIVA likely increases the risk of getting Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML), a rare brain disease caused by a virus which usually results in death or severe disability...Other serious side effects experienced by patients treated with RAPTIVA included low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia), low blood counts (anemia), new or worsening psoriasis, new or worsening arthritis, and nervous system disorders."

*Non-Prescription Bonus:

alli
Purpose: To aid in weight loss.
Side Effects: Loss of bowel control:
"Treatment effects are bowel changes that are most commonly caused by eating meals with too much fat while using alli capsules. Such effects may include oily spotting, loose stools, and more frequent stools that may be hard to control."

Angelo

You probably know that homeopathy originates in Germany with the work of Hahnemann in the 1700s. It's been very enduring and resistant to debunkerism for more than 200 years.

Back in the 1990s I lived in Germany for a while. During that time I never met anyone either through work or socially who did not accept the effectiveness of homeopathy for a wide range of chronic conditions. Of course, it needs to be potentised correctly to dosage (almost no so-called "study" to assess effectiveness has ever taken account of this essential requirement) and needs very accurate prescribing. Many of the people who not only accepted it but used it regularly were senior hospital surgeons and physicians; also pharmacists who spent the day dispensing alternately pharmacological drugs and homeopathic remedies.

If anyone wants to convince much of the German population that homeopathy doesn't work, I'd say they're going to have an uphill struggle for a couple of generations.

I know from personal experience that hoemeopathy can sure have a big effect on the body. Its effects can last for months. However, having said that I personally remain agnoistic about its ultimate therapeutic value (to explain what is behind this statement would be a very long and detailed discussion).

Okay. If it works for you, I'm happy for you. And please don't get me wrong, I know that modern medicine has also been responsible for some problems. However, we can't deny that humans are living longer and better lives.
Also, in this part of the forum, the topic does not need to be paranormal.

I have found that there is hardly an ailment thats affects can't be lessened with the proper application of Whisky and Windex. Its sort of my own brand of Homeopathy. :) And probably just as effective as some of the other home cures I have heard about.

I personally wouldn't attribute modern life expectancy to the advent of pharmaceuticals. I would attribute it to greater availability of food, water, the homes in which live, better personal hygiene and the greater availability of gyms and other methods of exercise.

People who don't eat right, who don't exercise often enough and who have poor personal hygiene are still subject to early deaths. The opposite can be seen in the world's "Blue Zones". Blue zones have shown that people and societies who engage in healthy eating habits and regular exercise will live longer, happier lives. Take a look for yourself.

Wikimedia Error

None of these blue zones have anything to do with pharmaceuticals. Longevity is primarily the cause of a strong body, with a strong immune system that's capable of expelling most, if not all, waste products from the body before the toxicity becomes too much for the body to handle. Preventing toxicity in the first place is fairly easy if you consume a 'mostly' plant diet. Having a strong body and immune system is the result of moderate, regular exercise. This stuff is common sense.

Btw, I'll never for a second EVER believe that the pharmaceutical industry has been a life saver, nor has it had any effect on longevity. There's enough information out there to show that it's done far more harm than good. Pharmaceuticals are in league with big business and big money. They're only in it for themselves. I don't know how anyone can support these companies and say "look how much good they do". Ha! That's laughable.

Well in that case, they must be master con-men. If you're in government and need to make public spending cuts to address the deficit, and even hint or suggest the spend on prescription pharmaceuticals might need to be examined to see if savings could be made, just witness the screaming and wailing from the population, supported by campaigns from the MSM, about how such suggested cuts in the drug budget are going to "cause thousands of deaths" and so forth.
