Yes, The Thing stands alone in the horror/alien genre -none better. (Sigh...) Close Encounters is probably the best in my mind to hit mainstream cinema -and yes, I agree a somewhat predicatable response. Dark City, albeit a slightly fantastical spin on the ET theme (being neo noir) is a truly great film. Other than that, other classics that might not be an exact fit for what you're getting it but nevertheless stand as honorable mentions in my book are Fantastic Planet, The Day The Earth Stood Still and Enemy Mine. Fire In The Sky is probably the best straight take on the subject, despite it's blaring inaccuracies.

... from what I can gather, it's more of a prequel than a remake. I'd like to add the original Invasion of The Body Snatchers, This Island Earth, 2001....

.... however, has anyone got a list of alien/ ufo films not to watch? I'd like to start the ball rolling with Skyline, Battle: Los Angles. I made the mistake of watching these back to back and unless I can invent a time travel machine there is no way I'm going to get that 4 hours of my life back....
