Chris O'Brien RIP

Free episodes:

Very sad news indeed. Just checked the forum for the first time in months... when I scanned down the thread titles I couldn't believe it. Still can't and will be dazed and disturbed for days and weeks over this. I never spoke to the guy or met him. Just years of listening and hanging on to his every word I guess.

Chris was a fascinating individual with many important stories to tell. (One of which that sticks in my mind was when, on a more recent guest appearance he made, he recounted when covert authorities of some kind broke into his place and stole all his maps and info that was mapping the mutilation cases etc,. )

The other crucial and irreplaceable loss will be the Ray Stanford files: The countless hours of video Chris made documenting the never seen film footage of Ray Stanford. (Footage and files that will certainly be lost when Ray passes due to Ray's apparent, in my opinion, "selfish clinging on to it" and having no heir or successor or archive ready to take it etc,.) So the heroic effort Chris made in getting as close to Ray as possible and trying to document the, apparently, extraordinary film footage in his possession... are all lost and gone forever too?

And so close to the passing of David Biedny as well. Both were sort of these mythical pillars of sanity and hope in my world view of the paranormal investigator field.

Both Chris and David were classics of the true UFO era and will be much missed. Fortunately we do have some fantastic recordings of their epic Paracast appearances. We’ll not see their like again. The ufo field has gone totally ego-sated Hollywood & $$$ crazy now - they’ve lost the plot. It’s show business - with accent on the business. I think that those of us who were around since the early days had the best of it all - such exciting, albeit relatively naive, fun.

Chris wasn’t religious or into organized religion as to my knowledge. He was spiritual. That is why scrolling down to the third image in the article below he may have found amusing. Apparently, after losing consciousness the car he was driving struck a stone and mortar wall advertising a church of Christ, which now ironically reads “Church of Chris.”

Could that have possibly been some type of sign … from the great beyond?

As a respectable Irishman with a great sense of humor, Chris deserves a wake complemented with an occasional off-color anecdote coupled with a pint of Guinness or perhaps another barley pop.

Cheers!

I'm really sad to hear this. I first heard of it from a friend of his who is checking further details of what happened. The accident occurred on Sunday morning (November 24).

Chris was suffering from COPD in recent years — very likely the result of his smoking habit. This wasn't the first time he had to rush to the hospital for treatment.

I first met Chris over 15 years ago, and was honored to call him a friend.

We'll be setting up an episode in the near future to talk about his work over the years.

FYI: I own his ourstrangeplanet.com domain and host his blog. I'll see if I can find anyone to take over and/or manage it.
I was going to reach out to him in October in reference to a project. Goes to show there is no time like the present. What a great loss, thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

Could it have been the Trickster that gave a nod to Chris after his car struck that stone wall?

There really hasn't been a lot of strong memorializing of Chris IMHO. This is one of the only podcasts that covered his death and life. I was really hoping for a big Paracast blowout retrospective of his work and his time with this environment, but that never manifested.

I still miss his very critical and inquisitive voice. His encyclopedic knowledge in so many areas was only hinting at the great brain inside his noggin. His voice was unique in an era when the old guard is fading away under the twilight bridge and there's not much in the way of really insightful characters left in the field. Clark is retired and Vallee is publishing his memoirs. So much of what we see today is a recycling of the past, and even a reviving of the old vampires who already had stakes put in their hearts, as Chris would say.

Innovation in the field has moved into academia that is often of a restricted nature. We appear to be bombarded by gov't controlled narratives, just like in the past decades, and an overflow of media productions that, with few exceptions, have next to no credibility whatsoever. We really need a solid Jim Mosely type of character right about now to help push the slush to the side.

I've yet to encounter anyone new that has the critical and historical insights that O'Brien had.

Very well stated, Mr. State.

And even at that they were somewhat harried.

As a proper memorial may include a cadre of David Perkins, Ray Stanford, Clifford Mahooty, Paul Kimball, Nick Redfurn, Greg Bishop and so many more that held different beliefs and opinions that seemingly time would stand still. Unfortunately, some ended up as dying before Chris.

Many years ago, Chris was scheduled speak at the Mission Theater here in Portland Oregon. In mentioning to Chris that I was to attend we were going to meet. Then his flights were unbelievably cancelled twice due to some type of mechanical failure perhaps perpetrated by that tricky trickster, and that was it…not to be.

I agree with your opinion.

“His voice was unique in an era when the old guard is fading away under the twilight bridge and there's not much in the way of really insightful characters left in the field.”

There are some insightful researchers out there but for the most part you’ll find the same old recycled Ancient Alien’s crap on the History Channel, where armchair Ufologists suckle the hind tit of Ufology until their eyeballs glaze over and literally roll up into their ocular cavities, with drivel slathered tee shirts and discarded Cheetos. Perhaps, similar to a sugar coma in needing immediate medical attention.

Back in the day Ufology was part serious research and part art form, as life follows art with a great deal of imagination.

As Chris would occasionally quote, “the question is more important that the answer.”

Moving ahead with the old guard (s).

Recently there’s been a flurry of activity with Jacques Vallees’s offering of Forbidden Science Volume 6, Scattered Castles. In the several interviews his voice is frail, and occasionally searching for words. Notwithstanding, he’s still there/here. The takeaway is that there has been a “data warehouse” compiled that may hold the keys to at least understanding UFO/paranormal phenomena. Apparently, it was yanked away by the ABCs before implantation.

Great response. I very much appreciate the many good laughs I got from your insights. It prompted me to look for some of those recent Interviews and have to admit I was a little shocked with Vallee's very specific claims regarding the data warehouse. It's one thing to say that there are these records that are documenting witness claims of similar ships and occupants, but it's a whole other level when you start saying that there is both hardware and bodies in possession (He did say that, right? 🤔). And then to claim that these landing locations are still yielding new pieces of evidence with contemporary investigation is bringing Pasulka's two books to life in ways that I was quite doubtful about at first.

His other claims regarding the sizes of these individual data warehouses was also a little jaw dropping. If I heard right he mentioned a data bank from the Gary Nolan team he was a part of at Bigelow's ranch that was on the order of 250,000 entries....?! Maybe I got that wrong, but what I do remember clearly is that he did say that there are a good number of these castles of data based on specific projects that exist scattered in various locations, and that the next steps for is for science to have the opportunity to bear down on the data for further analysis and development of tech....jeezums, I had to stop the video for a bit and ask myself is this Bob Lazar or Vallee talking?

The reasons for all this data being withheld and kept in silos appears to be the same old deal: it's not convenient for the three letter agencies and it would cause too much social disruption.

As an update to Ufology I feel like I'm back in a very familiar 1970's military conspiracy movie like Capricorn One or The Disappearance of Flight 412.

Vallee remains a very tantalizing figure, even after the whole Trinity misstep. I hadn't bothered reading any of his memoirs previously and let others just filter the main points down to me, but I think this most recent entry might be worth the first person read.

Yeah, but there’s more while wondering if Jacques is jumping the shark, as claiming to have discussed with a reliable source indicating a sophisticated protocol in communicating with other worldly critters. But then he said it could have been a simulation.
In respect to the "data warehouse", apparently there were fifty highly educated researchers working for a couple of years compiling accounts from all over the globe. Some were tasked in translating all accounts into English and then adding them into that "data base". From what has been gleaned, the program was defunded early because of fear from religious higher ups that the gates of hell my open.

In realizing that Vallee once consulted with Anton LaVey founder of the Church of Satan, nothing really surprises me, other than wonder if he has in fact past the Rubicon.

Not withstanding, there's some good stuff in those interviews.

I would just like to take a moment in acknowledging that at some point in time AI will replace my thoughts and there will be no need for grammar, syntax, parsing, bla…bla…bla. Similar to automotive manual transmissions (and drivers) that have or will become mostly extinct.

Yet, until such a time all of us will have to suffer… and suffer together, because isn’t that what it’s all about … togetherness?

I had forgotten about the communications with non humans that he mentioned. Again, jaw drops too low to find again. Because it wasn't just simple contactee stuff he was on about....I'm still trying to square his statements with Jerome Clark's assertion that a UFO crash recovered on earth, along with alien bodies, is something so big that it simply can't be hidden from history. is that what Varinha is all about?

I think back in the day everyone was hanging with LaVey as he was throwing the best parties. What always struck me about this photo is how Aimé Michel looks like he could be LaVey's son or at least a close relative.

Vallee has always been a student of the mystical arts in all their many forms and religious associations. So many Ufologists are Rosicrucians aren't they? I remember back in high school, when the UFO bug had bit me hard, I also had a copy of LaVey's Satanic Bible on the bookshelf alongside my UFO and ghost collection and a very strange black and blank book with no exterior labels, filled with Rosicrucian protocols, that I found at a yard sale.

But to your previous point, it's not a surprise that Republicans, like Keel, are all a bunch of worried demonologists.
