Les Paul, who invented the solid-body electric guitar died thursday of complications from pneumonia. He was 94 and will be missed.

One of my personal heroes, I got to meet him a couple of years ago for a few minutes, what an amazing pioneer, musician, inventor and all-around decent man. I'm teared up over this, man, they don't make 'em like Les Paul anymore. Damn.

94 years old. It's wonderful to see someone live that long and accomplish so much. I have a guitar with his name on it in my basement and I hope that I get a chance to play it tonight.

He didn't invent the solid body electric guitar, but was surely one of the pioneers. Rickenbacker (Electro String) and Bigsby had made solid guitars, and a little known guy named Paul Tutmarc even had a solid body electric bass in the 30's.
But Les did have the very first multi track recorder, and pioneered things like close mic'ing the vocals.
I never got to meet him, but he was in a music store in NJ once when I was there back in the late 70's. I wanted to go say hello, but they wouldn't let me.
