This Week's Episode: Gene and Randall welcome long-time UFO and Bigfoot investigator Stan Gordon, who will provide detail and graphic descriptions of recent cases, including a large number reported in and around his Pennsylvania locale. What about the possibility that both UFOs and Cryptid reports, such as Bigfoot, have a common cause? Stan is the primary investigator of the 1965 UFO crash incident that occurred near Kecksburg, PA. and has been taking calls on UFO sightings and other strange reports from the public since 1969. He has given illustrated lectures both locally and nationally on the topics of UFOs, Bigfoot, Cryptids, and strange encounters since the late 1960s. He was listed in the 2005 FATE Magazine special, The 100 Most Influential People in Ufology Today.

Will Things Ever Change?

By Gene Steinberg

UFO lobbyist Stephen Bassett tells The Paracast, in an interview recorded for next weekend’s episode of After The Paracast, that he’s collected hundreds of stories about the existence of the Pentagon UAP Task Force. Clearly it’s gotten a decent amount of attention, though the media nowadays has a very short attention span. Today’s headlines — and these reports were decidedly non-headline in nature — are forgotten the next day, or the next hour, due to the onslaught of pressing events.

In fact, I would not be surprised to see actual UFO disclosure survive the news cycle for no more than a day or two before people move on to other topics.

Now if you think I’m just a jaded old man, that may be true, but stick with me. When you’ve followed the field for decades, as I’ve done, you can see where I’m coming from. I literally grew up reading about hopes and dreams that there would be some sort of UFO — or flying saucer — disclosure any time now.

In those days, it was Major Donald Keyhoe, a former Marine, who wrote several books claiming the government knew — knew — that the saucers were spaceships and that they could be persuaded to let us in on the secret if Congress demanded it.

It didn’t take long for me, as a teenager, to realize this was quite a naive approach. Politics aren’t so simple, and even the politician one might regard as honest will have limitations as to how far they can go to ferret out what they regard as the truth.

The hearings in Congress in the 1960s led us to the Condon Report, and that led us nowhere other than to give the Air Force the excuse it needed to shutter Project Bluebook and get out of the flying saucer investigation business. True, that project was mostly a public relations operation anyway, meant to reassure everyone there was nothing to it, even though some of the sightings they looked into remain unexplained.

That total, 701, was once a working title of the James Fox UFO documentary, which is being released as “The Phenomenon.”

Now there have been renewed expectations that Congress is going to do something this time. In response to a Senate request, the Pentagon has established a UAP Task Force that is looking into the matter.

But as I pointed out in last week’s column, when you actually ask the Pentagon what it’s all about, they provide some general statements about looking into incursions of unknown aircraft as possible threats to national security. It appears that they are primarily concerned about stray airplanes or drones from China or Russia, not possible visits from extraterrestrials.

But there are still expectations that the Task Force may some day influence hearings on the matter, as if a Congressional hearing, House or Senate, can achieve significant results.

Forgetting the House hearings in the 1960s, consider how often Congress holds them. There are dozens and dozens and few, if any, result in anything meaningful. Other than those that might consider such significant moves as the possible impeachment of the President of the United States, how many hearings can you recall? And what were the results?

Consider the multiple investigations into the 2012 attack at a U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, which resulted in the deaths of four Americans including an Ambassador. Other than spurts of publicity over the pubic hearings, which even included testimony from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton — who later became a candidate for President — nothing much happened. No new laws were passed, nobody was charged with crimes. It’s hardly remembered despite the expenditure of millions of dollars.

After politically-charged Congressional investigations into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election for President, the Senate Intelligence Committee concluded that it really happened. It wasn’t a hoax, even though there are arguments over whether there was any collusion. But nothing much has changed!

UFOs? UAPs? Even if such hearings were public, I rather suspect it would end with a promise to investigate the matter further — more seriously — and that, as they say, would be that. As soon as Congress demands or promises to investigate and report on something, that’s surely evidence it will soon be forgotten.

At best, you might have some individuals from the Pentagon called up a while later to ask what’s going on; they will assure the politicians they are on the case and that, as they say will be that.

Disclosure?

Now the dream is that the President of the U.S. or another world leader will call a press conference and reveal that we are being visited by ET. That would seem indisputable, but in this polarized environment, at least half of the people would probably still call it “fake news” and nothing more.

Sure, if a spaceship were on display, that would be something not readily dismissed, but does anyone believe such a thing might happen?

Even if that UAP Task Force released a report indicating that some of the mysterious aircraft observed by military pilots were not manufactured on this planet, it’s not at all certain the story would stick. That might depend on whether there are ongoing followups to provide more information as to what is being seen and why they are certain that ET is among us.

Again, in the press of events, the story is apt to lose significance within a few days or, at best, weeks, unless there were continuing revelations by those in charge as to what was going on, and efforts to coordinate other sightings reported around the world over the decades.

Is there any chance any of that might occur?

Now Bassett expects significant developments in 2021, but even that might well depend on the outcome of the election in November. If former Vice President Biden and his fellow Democrats are victorious, including taking control of the Senate, it would be positive for UAP disclosure. Any other scenario, especially a total Republican victory, less so.

I admire his optimism. But I have seen too much to expect things to change regardless of how the political wars are resolved.
