This Week's Episode: Gene and Chris talk shop with forum moderator Goggs Mackay along for the ride. Chris wonders why all the data from a decade’s worth of San Luis Valley research that he’s submitted to MUFON and NIDS (National Institute for Discovery Science) has not received an acknowledgement — or a thank you. He discusses some of the amazing phenomena he's investigated, cases that have yet to become part of the UFO lexicon. And what about disclosure advocates such as Stephen Bassett? Can we ever really understand the true source behind UFOs? Could we even wrap our heads around or do we have language to describe what it's really all about? What about communicating with aliens that do not look or think in a way that even resembles what we humans understand?

Chris O’Brien’s Site: Our Strange Planet

After The Paracast -- Available exclusively to Paracast+ subscribers on September 18: With Chris, Goggs and forum member Ufology (Randall) on hand, Gene reveals the strange but true story of his printer’s weird virus. Randall, who takes a fairly traditional approach to the UFO mystery, responds to the suggestion to tear down the UFO field as we know it and examine the evidence anew by people with no vested interest, one way or the other, in the subject. The discussion continues with Chris, Goggs and Randall talking about the possible sources of UFOs and the implications if it were it revealed that we were being visited by beings from other space. Would ET hold off in telling us who they are? Would governments and private industry withhold the truth because of its possible major impact on the energy industry and other major industrial conglomerates?

Of Recognition and UFO Disclosure
By Gene Steinberg

When I tell you that I have written more than 30 books, and probably hundreds of magazine articles for traditional print publications, it may seem impressive. It’s common to believe that prolific writers must be rolling in money, but that’s not necessarily true.

While payment for magazine articles, at least before they all went digital, was quite good with some publishers, other publishers pinched pennies. Book publishers traditionally pay via an advance — if they give an advance — against sales. If they manage to sell enough copies, it “earns out” and you receive royalties.

But one thing I learned while writing consumer electronics titles is that the publishers have pretty solid data on the expected sales of a title. The advance they offer is quite close to the revenue the book will usually generate during its short lifecycle.

Over the period of a decade, only a handful of books I wrote delivered enough sales to pay royalties. Two even did fairly well, though not in the same tier as a best-selling author. It was a living while it lasted. But as more content went online, the need for such books was sharply diminished, along with the opportunities to write them.

Now my friend and co-host Chris O’Brien is best known for several books that include “The Mysterious Valley,” “Enter the Valley,” “Secrets of the Mysterious Valley,” “Stalking the Trickers” and “Stalking the Herd.”

While these books attracted a loyal audience, they did not rain riches into Chris’ bank account. Most UFO and paranormal books sell in quantities of a few thousand at most, and do not begin to compensate the author for the amount of work they put into researching and writing.

So even if he didn’t become rich and famous, one would hope that serious UFO researchers would consider all his hard work and add it to their own data.

But it doesn’t seem to have always worked out that way.

As Chris reveals during our Shop Talk episode that is scheduled for September 18, such organizations as MUFON haven’t even bothered to thank Chris for sending them huge amounts of useful data. It’s a tragedy.

Chris spent ten years of his life, from 1992 until 2002, exploring paranormal encounters in the San Luis Valley. He drove over 300,000 miles in this quest, a thankless task since he will never be compensated for all the hard work he’s done.

In the years since he completed his on-site work, he has stayed in close touch with many of his sources, and makes return visits from time to time to keep abreast of more recent developments. As listeners know, he is working with several colleagues to establish a network of cameras to detect UFO and paranormal activity, known as the San Luis Valley Camera Project. Once it’s live, a server will broadcast what the motion-sensitive cameras record. Will they deliver solid evidence of ongoing paranormal activity, a crystal clear picture of a flying saucer? You don’t know if you don’t try.

But at a time where major UFO research organizations are largely focused on spreading the word about possible alien visitation, and crying out for disclosure by the authorities, how many people are actually examining the UFO mystery fairly to see what’s really going on. Spreading the word is not investigation. Demanding disclosure is not investigation; instead it’s ceding the responsibility to others that one believes know the truth and merely have to be persuaded to let us in on the secret.

Years ago, one former paranormal talk show host referred to the UFO field as “toxic.” In part, it was because of the failure to make any meaningful progress, but also because of the ongoing controversies involving fakers who seek 15 minutes of fame rather than help move the quest forward.

Now it’s not just the UFO field treading water and hoping the answers will eventually be handed to us. It is widely believed by UFO researchers that the U.S. government knows the truth about alien visitation but has chosen to keep it all a secret.

If that’s true and disclosure really happened, it would be a civilization-altering development. What if we are indeed being visited by advanced beings from a planet orbiting another star system? How long have they been among us, and what are their motives?

What are the chances that they are hostile? Some researchers maintain that ET is creating a hybrid race of human-aliens who are slowly infiltrating our society with the ultimate goal of a silent takeover. Is there any chance that this is true?

If the governments of Earth knew such a terrifying secret, I suppose that would be reason to keep it a secret, as they work behind the scenes to try to combat this covert invasion.

To be fair, this point of view is highly disputed, and the evidence, largely consisting of UFO abductions with details often uncovered through hypnotic regression, is extremely controversial.

At the same time, there’s no evidence that ET is friendly towards us except, perhaps, to contactees and channelers who are attempting to spread the kind words of our “Space Brothers.”

Even if such encounters are true — and there really isn’t any evidence to speak of — why believe ET? Because they are more advanced? Why would that make their motives so pure? Why believe creatures because they can travel across the stars and have advanced technology gimmicks? Why assume their moral growth would match their technological growth?

Whatever the governments know, there may be legitimate reasons to keep a secret. The promise of free or unlimited energy would likely freak out energy companies and governments that depend on oil revenues to fuel their economies. If there was the danger that all those riches would vanish overnight with the revelation that oil was obsolete and we had to move on, that might explain why the oil interests wouldn’t want us to know the truth. They’d want to extend their prosperity for as long as possible.

Perhaps.

But all this is speculation. There is no evidence what governments actually know about UFOs, or if they know anything at all beyond what the rest of us know.

In the meantime, I hope that the hard work of dedicated paranormal researchers, such as Chris O’Brien, will be honored and recognized. Maybe it’s time to tear apart the fragile edifice of the UFO field, start anew and take a fresh look at what’s really going on.
