As I write this, tens of thousands of Tea Party protesters have marched on Washington to complain about alleged government intrusion into their personal lives. Skeptics might suggest, with a certain degree of justification, that this is an amazing example of astroturfing, an artificial grass roots movement fed by conservative commentators and their various and sundry political action groups.
Regardless of your point of view about the whole affair, you can see that, with the right ingredients, whether frustration or outside manipulation, you can certainly inspire an extremely large number of people to get involved in public demonstrations about one thing or another.
At the same time, there are various movements in the UFO field to bury the White House fax machines with demands for UFO disclosure, and for people to otherwise insist that the government tell us what it knows about those strange craft in our skies.
Unfortunately, not one of these movements can claim a fraction of the success of those recent demonstrations. Of course, they have budgets of thousands rather than millions to tap, and the audiences of people who care enough to write their representatives -- or the President -- to express their concerns are astonishingly small, barely enough to rise above the level of background noise.
At the same time any recent poll will show that a large portion of the population actually believes in UFOs, and that perhaps millions of those responding have seen strange things themselves. So why the disparity? Why is it that so many people are ready to believe, but so few demand that the truth must be told, regardless of the consequences?
You might suggest that even fairly-elected governments around the world don't really care what people think, unless it means they won't win reelection. That feeling certainly has a lot going for it. At the same time even a passionate minority can make their views known and, with proper media support, get things to happen. That explains, for example, why some previously unknown politician might suddenly leap into the spotlight, and become the next great world leader.
In our tiny corner of the world, it seems highly unlikely that anything can be done to get more serious attention focused on UFOs. Sure, you see those occasional sighting reports, TV specials and so on and so forth. But far too many of these presentations are strictly intended for entertainment, the facts be damned! If the media doesn't take it very seriously, why should you?
This isn't to say that the right combination of circumstances can't change things. Consider that the congressional hearings on UFOs in the 1960s came in the wake of major sightings in Michigan and elsewhere. People talked, and their representatives listened. All right, the best they could achieve was the Condon Report, regarded by most as a clumsy whitewash of the situation. But that achievement was a lot more than what the current movements have accomplished.
This isn't to say that I think disclosure is impossible. While I might question the motives of some of the current leaders in the movement, their goals are surely worthwhile. Certainly those rare press conferences featuring unimpeachable UFO witnesses helps some. But all too often the whole affair is forgotten in the rush to report the next great event in the 24 hour news cycle.
Alas, it may just require a rash of public UFO events in major cities -- or strange craft witnessed by thousands regardless of location -- over a period of several days to focus attention beyond that of a single story with the usual dumb cliches.
Sure, there are cases that surely fit into those categories. They are, however, reported in cities or countries that are not the major focus of the 24 hour cable networks, and thus they are generally ignored, or given only casual coverage. But you see where I'm going: We may have no control whatever how this all turns out. The ball is truly in "their" court!
