It is unfortunately all too common for some people who believe in UFOs to also accept the claims that Earth people are in regular touch with advanced beings from another planet, perhaps in another galaxy, or from another dimension. In large part, these beings are allegedly here to encourage us to become true galactic citizens, protect the environment and abandon the instruments of war.

Now I am not going to simply dismiss the possibility of benevolent ETs out of hand. It may well be that they care about everyone in their galactic neighborhood, however vast that neighborhood might be.

On the other hand, it does seem that, if what these beings claim is correct, they are unduly concerned with matters that, as a practical matter, shouldnÂ?t directly affect them. I mean, if weÂ?d rather just destroy our planet, then why should they care so much?

If these visitations are accurately conveyed by even a few of those contactees, then we ought to appreciate the peaceful intent of our visitors.

That assumes, of course, that they are peaceful. Maybe itÂ?s all an act. Maybe they donÂ?t want us to destroy our planet so they can take it over at a time of their choosing. Or maybe, just maybe, they have a vested interest in what goes on here for another reason, and thatÂ?s because they arenÂ?t from Â?out thereÂ? at all. They are, in fact, our neighbors and they would be directly impacted by the consequences of our unseemly behavior.

That takes us to one of the variations of the Earth theory of UFO visitation that posits a race of beings that coexists with us, but for reasons best known to themselves, they choose to live an independent existence. The late Mac Tonnies considered such possibilities seriously enough to write a whole book about these Â?cryptoterrestrials, and itÂ?s a title that will likely be published in a few months, according to publisher Patrick Huyghe, of Anomalist Books.

He is not, however, the first person to theorize about a hidden race of advanced beings. Way back in the 1940s, the late Richard S. Shaver wrote a number of stories about two intelligent races left behind during an ancient global catastrophe, both of which fled to caverns within the Earth, where they still survive.

ShaverÂ?s stories were originally heavily rewritten by the late Ray Palmer and published as fairly imaginative pulp science fiction in Â?Amazing Stories.Â? However, Palmer shocked his readers and, to some at least, made himself persona non grata in science fiction circles by claiming that Shaver was speaking the truth when he wrote about subterranean races.

Palmer went on to become the cofounder of Â?Fate,Â? the longest surviving paranormal magazine. Shaver died in the 1970s, and Palmer followed him a few years later. For the most part, their theories died with them, although the concept of cryptoterrestrials survives and is resurrected from time to time.

Since the predominant solution to the UFO enigma remains ET, the possibility that they come from another location, on our own planet, is not likely to be taken too seriously. On the other hand, donÂ?t forget that the Â?UÂ? in UFO stands for Â?Unidentified.Â? We really donÂ?t have any final answers, just theories. Thus, it makes as much sense to consider a terrestrial origin as an extraterrestrial one. Indeed, itÂ?s also likely that both possibilities will, in the end, turn out to be correct. Or perhaps something altogether different, something even more mysterious. There are loads of possibilities, and itÂ?s far too premature to consider any of them correct at this point in time.

Peace,
Gene Steinberg
