Special Announcement: The Paracast is heard Sundays from 2:00 AM until 5:00 AM Central Time on the GCN Radio Network and affiliates around the USA, and online across the globe via download and on-demand streaming.

Please Send a Donation to The Paracast: Although ads help cover a small part of our expenses, the income they produce is never enough to pay your humble hosts decent wages. Also, we do not receive any revenue from the ads placed on the show by our network or local stations. So we hope you're able to help fill the gap, if you can, to help us cover increasing server costs and other expenses -- or perhaps provide a little extra cash for lunch and utility bills. No contribution is too small (or too large :). We have a Donate link on our home page, below the logo and audio player. There's also a Donate link on our forums, at the bottom of the sidebar on the right. Or just send your PayPal donation direct to sales (at) theparacast (dot) com.

Attention U.S. Listeners: Help Us Bring The Paracast to Your City! In the summer of 2010, The Paracast joined the GCN radio network. This represented a huge step in bringing our show to a larger, mainstream audience. But we need your help to add additional affiliates to our growing network. Please ask one of your local talk stations if they are interested in carrying The Paracast. Feel free to contact us directly with the names of programming people we might be able to contact on your behalf. We can't do this alone, and if you succeed in convincing your local station to carry the show, we'll reward you with one of our special T-shirts, and other goodies. With your help, The Paracast can grow into one of the most popular paranormal shows on the planet!

Please Visit Our Online Store: You asked, and we answered. We are now taking orders for The Official Paracast T-Shirt and an expanded collection of other specially customized merchandise. Is it Time to Give Up on Extraterrestrial UFOs?
By Gene Steinberg

Over the years, I’ve held a viewpoint about the existence and origin of UFOs that was decidedly different from the conventional wisdom. For those who believe UFOs are real, the conventional wisdom has it that they must come from another planet, no doubt orbiting another star system light years away.

Yes, there are certainly issues about traveling such vast distances, but with our own scientists beginning to take such sci-fi gimmicks as “warp drive” seriously, it may well be possible to travel to such far-off destinations in days or weeks rather than years or decades. This isn’t to say that such propulsion schemes are really possible, but you’d think that a species hundreds or thousands of years ahead of us would have long ago developed a technology of this sort. Or maybe they are using methods that we can only dream of.

Take, for example, the “Stargate,” as depicted in a movie and several TV series. The Stargate consists of a huge circular device at both source and destination. But once you enter this huge machine, it works perhaps similar to the matter transportation device in “Star Trek.” Your molecules are disintegrated, thrust through a space warp to their destination, and reintegrated. Or something like that.

Now if I live long enough to travel through space, I’d choose the latter, assuming the system is reliable.

But that’s fiction, and we have to deal with a reality where we know that strange craft, apparently metallic, are being seen all around the world. Sometimes they engage in incredible stunts of maneuverability, on occasion playing cat and mouse games with our own aircraft. That they apparently also land, leave trace evidence, and are photographed and tracked by radar, leaves the clear impression that they are solid objects of some sort.

So perhaps it’s understandable that, once you assume that no Earthly nation can create craft with those advanced levels of performance, you will naturally conclude they must come from another planet. All right, that makes perfect sense. Astronomers are finding more and more evidence of planets orbiting far-off star systems. Some of them may even be “M-type” or “Goldilocks” worlds, being not too hot and not too cold to sustain life as we know it.

When you add it all together, it is inevitable that life may be expansive throughout our galaxy. Some of that life may have developed advanced technologies that enable them to explore the farthest reaches of space. No doubt they would seek out other intelligent races, and no doubt Earth would be considered for a visit. This is particularly true for extraterrestrials who reside on planets orbiting nearby star systems. It makes perfect sense, right?

There have been claims about possible UFOs being seen in space by astronauts, and let’s not forget the curious things that are sometimes declared to be intelligent artifacts on the Moon and Mars. So isn’t that even more evidence that ET discovered our neighborhood, and decided to hang around?

I suppose. Except that claims about Lunar and Martian artifacts, for example, are highly disputed. UFOs are mostly, or entirely, seen here on Earth. Given the number of craft of all kinds actually seen, you’d almost think that not one but dozens of races are here traversing the skies, and landing when the need arises.

Again, UFOs are an Earthly phenomenon insofar as where the objects are seen. Does that mean that they are someone’s secret weapons?

Well, I suppose that might be true in some cases, particularly during the early days of the modern UFO era, when scientists and engineers were experimenting with test aircraft recovered from Germany at the end of World War II. Indeed, some suggest that the Roswell crashed involved one of our own aircraft (or perhaps a test balloon), and not something from another planet.

In some cases, UFOs seem almost to wink in and wink out, as if they are instantly transporting to another place. One intriguing possibility is that UFOs are actually interdimensional craft, capable of leaping from one reality to another. Or perhaps they just fly real fast, but you have to wonder if that’s what’s really going on.

What about UFOs from Earth?

There are stories about the strange creatures that might inhabit underground cities, accessible via caves. The claims of the late Richard Shaver, for example, told of subterranean dwellers who supposedly fled the surface of the Earth to escape the ravages of a global catastrophe thousands of years ago. Shaver’s material, which actually originated as a series of science fiction stories in “Amazing Stories” magazine, told of a race of evil beings known as “dero,” and of the “tero,” the good guys, and their age-old struggle.

But the Shaver stories are but recent versions of the legends of advanced ancient civilizations that achieved great feats of technological advancement before something happened that destroyed not just such civilizations, but pretty much all evidence that they ever existed.

Another theory has it that the remnants of one of those civilizations, perhaps Atlantis or Lemuria, still exists somewhere underground or in our oceans, and are thus not readily detected by explorers. Or maybe governments are aware of the existence of our neighbors, but choose not to acknowledge their reality. Perhaps there is some sort of secret agreement of cooperation.

Or maybe the subsurface dwellers simply choose to stay hidden, except for occasional voyages by their flying ships. But you think, with navigation satellites and regular monitoring of conditions around the world, that we’d soon discover evidence of their existence. How can they elude us so consistently year after year? What about Google Maps? What about Apple and their new mapping service?

Other than no-fly zones, and deliberate efforts to keep the secret by our governments, I suppose it’s always possible that subsurface dwellers could be actively hiding evidence of their existence. They block radar and radio signals, and use advanced cloaking devices of some sort to shield themselves from our prying eyes. But why do they even allow humans to defile the planet they share with us if they have the power to prevent humans from causing, say, global warming?

When you look through history, you’ll see reports of all sorts of unusual phenomena reported in the prevailing cultural meme. So we had emissaries from the gods in Biblical times, strange beings, such as leprechauns, a few centuries back, and, nowadays, visitors from other planets. The real question is what are we seeing, and are these things what they appear to be? Until that question can be fully answered, we may never know what’s really behind the UFO mystery.

What are we seeing when we see a UFO?
We're seeing an alien craft.
But are alien craft really what they appear to be?
To the extent that anything is what it appears to be ... Yes.
