This Week's Episode: Gene and cohost Tim Swartz introduce experiencer Michael Kameron, author of "High Strangeness: A Lifetime of Alien and Paranormal Encounters." Kameron was just an ordinary person who experienced both sides of the paranormal, from alien abductions to encountering strange, mystical beings, stretching back from his childhood right through to his adult life. Having been brought up in the backdrop of a stringent Roman Catholic Irish community in the East-End of London in the 1970’s, it was unthinkable that such unexpected, supernatural encounters could exist at all. He lived in a house plagued by poltergeist activity, encountering spectral visitations from hooded figures. During his encounters with non-human entities, according to the book, and having experienced bouts of missing time, he was also an unwitting victim to the infamous "Men in Black" along with military exploitation, out of body experiences, spiritual and psychic confrontations, visions, along with UFO activity.

After The Paracast — Available exclusively for Paracast+ subscribers on October 1: Experiencer Michael Kameron talks to Gene and cohost Tim Swartz about his lifetime of incredible and sometimes frightening paranormal encounters, which include possible alien abductions. During the discussion, Kameron describes his experiences as out-of-body events. He also talks about reincarnation and the impact of his experiences to the people around him. Kameron is author of "High Strangeness: A Lifetime of Alien and Paranormal Encounters." Throughout his childhood, Kameron had been unaware that such experiences were anything other than normal, until he realized that upon reflection, something odd had been happening; that his life was very different from others who considered such supernatural phenomena as totally inexplicable. It was then that he became aware that his very existence appeared to be working in parallel worlds, and that he was ostensibly living two entirely different lives, rather than one.

UFO Theories Off the Deep End — Or Not!
By Gene Steinberg

I suppose I’m going to revert to my usual “stuck in the past” mode, but it’s sad that so little progress has been made in resolving the persistent question of UFO reality. The solutions are more or less the same.

So the most common theory is that we are being visited by ET, advanced beings, or AI’s, from other planets, no doubt revolving around other star systems.

In the early days of the UFO field, such nearby planets as Venus and Mars were considered potential sources. But as our fledgling explorations of space revealed, neither has surface conditions to support life as we know it. Indeed, Venus is a hothouse, with surface temperatures reaching 900 degrees Fahrenheit. Perhaps that’s just perfect for alien steam rooms.

The early flying saucer contactees pretty much did themselves in by claiming their visitors came from these worlds. That ET appeared quite human — more so than the gray aliens featured in abduction lore — made the stories even less credible.

Well, perhaps they were watching the Saturday morning sci-fi TV shows of the 1950s where humans apparently inhabited most planets. They were produced cheaply, so there wasn’t much of a budget to create proper masks or prosthetics to foster the alien illusion, except in rare cases.

Not that there weren’t films featuring alien beings with an alien appearance.“Earth Versus the Flying Saucers,” the 1956 Grade-B sci-fi film featuring special effects created by stop-motion animation wizard Ray Harryhausen, had an interesting slant on the look of our invaders. They walked about in metallic spacesuits, but when the helmet was removed from one of these beings, it had a face reminiscent of a gray alien.

Prophetic?

While the ET hypothesis persists to this very day among most people who believe that the saucers are real, there are alternatives that are largely under the radar as far as the general public is concerned.

So in the mid-1960s, advanced UFO thinker Allen Greenfield, then a teenager, devised an interesting alternative theory with a little help from yours truly. We were hanging out at a luxury New York hotel, as scores of New Year’s revelers were present outside. I don’t even think we saw the Times Square Ball dropping on the room’s TV set.

Instead, Allen and I took a couple of chairs, and sat around a work table. He brought with him a tattered copy of a paperback book, “The Incomplete Enchanter,” from L. Sprague de Camp and Fletcher Pratt. It was first published in 1941.

The book focused on the concept of parallel worlds, or alternate realities. So in another universe, the laws of physics didn’t rule. Magic did, and you can imagine how that worked out. Supposedly, you could travel from one reality to another by aligning your mind to them with some sort of “symbolic logic” scheme.

The whole concept was undeniably romantic. With mind power alone, you could visit not just another reality, but one that operated by a set of totally different principles. That could be loads of fun, or a total nightmare, depending on your point of view.

Nonetheless a variation of that parallel world theme had an air of credibility to it. It would explain why UFOs could, in effect, wink in and out in their travels across our skies. Perhaps they were traversing dimensional portals.

It would also mean that, employing a technology to allow for such travel, the trip could take seconds rather than years or decades. The possibility of interstellar travel, warp drives, wormholes and other elaborate and mind-boggling methods, didn’t come into play.

Not that jumping realities was necessarily a simple concept. Then again, there are theories about possible portals around the world where paranormal events of all sorts occur. Consider the “Mysterious Valley,” as described in three books on the topic from former Paracast cohost Christopher O’Brien.

If such portals exist, are they natural occurrences, or created by advanced technologies?

But maybe we’re taking this too far. Parallel worlds are, however, fascinating alternatives to the more “mundane” theories of spaceships from other planets.

After that night, Allen took the concept and ran with it. He came out with his “Alternate Horizons Newsletter,” where he continued to expand on his theory. Unfortunately, this little publication is lost in the mists of time. I was able to locate an eight-page extract online selling for $35. I’m serious.

I’m also serious that it evidently comes from a what is labeled as the “Forest Ackerman Collection.”

By the way, for those who don’t remember Forry, he was a contemporary of sci-fi and flying saucer legend Ray Palmer, was well known as a collector of horror and sci-fi memorabilia and a writer and agent. And he evidently had some level of interest in UFOs too.

Yet one more theory suggests that we are being visited by beings from our far future who get here in time machines. The physiology of many UFO beings, gray aliens, may indeed represent the ultimate direction of human evolution. Not that I’d like to become one, but still…

While some theorize about time travelers, there are potential nightmares, the so-called grandfather paradox. It basically focuses on the consequences of changing the past. So if someone travels back through time and kills their grandfather before he has children would that, in essence, mean that the traveler no longer existed?

Pop culture is filled with such references, even the 1985 sci-fi comedy, “Back to the Future,” where a 17-year-old accidentally travels to the past, and runs into a situation where he has to make sure his parents actually meet and fall in love, for otherwise he won’t exist. The character, portrayed by Michael J. Fox, succeeds but the fix isn’t 100%, as he realizes when he returns to his own timeframe.

Both the movie and TV depictions of a comic book character, The Flash, portray the consequences when the protagonist travels back in time to prevent his mother from being murdered. The entire timeframe is messed up as a result.

Even the 1978 comic book classic, “Superman: The Movie,” has a scene, towards the end of the film, where the “Man of Steel” goes back through time to save the life of Lois Lane.

But there are other time travel theories where the past can’t be changed, because it’s meant to be. Or that each change creates yet another parallel world, and I can see where that can get mighty convoluted real fast if there are lots of time travelers about.

If UFOs are time machines, the intensity with which they interact with humans and change their lives clearly has potentially serious downsides. It’s not like they are just watching the wheels go by.

Yet another theory has it that we collectively create the UFO mystery, and that their look and performance is influenced by popular culture.

And let’s not forget the possibility that our universe is actually an advanced simulation. So does that mean that paranormal events are actually programming defects? Or perhaps they are the result of the forces behind the simulation messing with us, assuming they are sane of course.

As much as I am skeptical of the possibilities, the prospect of extraterrestrials in our midst is undeniably appealing. Assuming they are warm and fuzzy of course.
