This Week's Episode: Gene and Chris present researcher Micah Hanks, of The Gralien Report, Over the course of the last year, Micah has been researching a handful of unusual topics, which include a post World War II mystery in Chile. But this episode begins with Micah discussing classic UFO cases that, years later, may not be as compelling as they originally seemed. Were all or most of them conventional aircraft, perhaps undergoing tests? And what about evidence of possible nuclear events in ancient times? Micah and Chris also discuss ways to capture evidence of ongoing paranormal events, such as the San Luis Valley Camera Project, and other projects that may or may not have demonstrated progress.

The Gralien Report: The Gralien Report - The Future Is Now

After The Paracast -- Available exclusively to Paracast+ subscribers on October 1: Gene, Chris and special guest Micah Hanks, of The Gralien Report, discuss the ongoing obsession with UFOs and Nazis, about possible secret Nazi inventions at the dawn of the modern UFO era. Gene raises the question of why Nazi scientists, such as the ones that joined the American space program, seemed to have accomplished more than those in other countries. Micah talks about the recent move of Fate magazine to North Carolina, as the discussion expands to the preservation of valuable paranormal literature and evidence. Gene mentions that sad fate of a portion of Jim Moseley’s library after his death, and Chris recalls what happened to the huge amount of material accumulated by Fortean researcher Tom Adams after he died. Micah also briefly covers the theories that Adolf Hitler may have survived his alleged death and moved to Argentina or Chile.

What if UFOs Sightings All Had Natural Causes?
By Gene Steinberg

When I first got interested in the flying saucers, I quickly came to the conclusion that they were visitors from other planets.

Nothing special there. It has long been the prevailing viewpoint of the origins of those strange flying things. But I came to that conclusion at the age of 11, largely because I read a few books on the subject that asserted the extraterrestrial hypothesis.

It certainly fit the prevailing sci-fi approach to the subject. In the 1950s, there were a number of movies about alien visitors. They were mostly hostile, but there were exceptions, such as “The Day the Earth Stood Still.” Well, that may be a gray area, since the protagonist, Klaatu, came to our planet to warn us of the folly of our warlike behavior. If we didn’t get our acts together, Gort and the rest of his robotic police force might destroy us in the interests of galactic piece.

Now that film clearly influenced a number of the contact claims of that era. We had the handsome alien wearing a silvery suit who came here to preach peace and brotherhood. The demand that we straighten up and fly right or be destroyed was omitted, since it wasn’t politically correct.

But so-called serious or scientific UFO researchers quickly adopted the ET meme. It was all so simple, so logical. The objects were able to demonstrate feats of speed and maneuverability beyond anything we could do and thus they must come from somewhere else, probably another planet.

Over the decades, this theory has persisted. Nowadays, as astronomers discover more and more evidence of extrasolar planets, it only seems logical that many of them have spawned intelligent species. It’s easy to imagine that some of those beings have developed advanced spacefaring civilizations capable of interstellar travel. So perhaps they are coming here to pay us visits.

There are researchers who have looked into ancient legends dating back to Biblical times and earlier about possible interactions with advanced beings. Did those meetings involve the presence of God and his angels, or alien visitors from other worlds? Perhaps it was a combination of both, but I’m not going to touch upon religious beliefs or religious doctrine.

Except that some researchers have looked to the Bible for possible evidence of the presence of ET.

But it does stand to reason that, if an advanced galactic civilization were thousands of years ahead of us, they might have visited us from time to time, perhaps a couple of thousand years ago. Just how would Earthlings of that era interpret their presence, and the presence of advanced flying machines? Chariots of the Gods indeed!

The fact that alien beings were here once upon a time does not mean they are still here. They might have checked us out, perhaps had brief interactions with the primitive locals before leaving to parts unknown.

So there was no prime directive that governed their encounters with other races, and thus they improvised. Or perhaps they did what they could to help deliver their message. But their true motives may be unfathomable.

Yet another theory has it that our genes were, in part, seeded or manipulated by extraterrestrials, and thus they visit us from time to time to see how we’re doing.

Even if there were ancient astronauts of one sort or another, that doesn’t necessarily mean they are still here. Is it possible that the real aliens left us long ago? What about all the sightings that have been reported, particularly in the years after World War II? If not aliens, just what are they?

A breakaway civilization that’s only a bit ahead of us? Test aircraft that is mistakenly identified as possible spaceships with a little help from government operatives to exaggerate their capabilities?

So is it possible that flying saucers are, at least in part, the result of deliberate disinformation to hide what’s really going on? If something strange is seen in the sky, a few people, pretending to be eyewitnesses, might insert some outrageous details into the mix of testimony to convey the impression that we’re dealing with mystery aircraft rather than something that’s perfectly conventional.

Lest we forget, the fact that there is a UFO mystery may, by and large, be the result of an accidental confluence of events that became the subject of sensational newspaper headlines.

So we had Kenneth Arnold’s classic sighting, on June 24, 1947, involving nine shiny objects flying in formation near Mountain Rainier in Washington State. He estimated their speeds at over 1,200 miles per hour, a pace clearly beyond what Earthly aircraft were capable of at the time.

Arnold, a skilled private pilot, clearly did his due diligence to estimate their speeds. but what if he was wrong? What if they were only traveling at a few hundred miles an hour?

In follow-up stories, Arnold quickly adopted the ETH as a possible explanation for what he saw. In a 1949 interview with the Saturday Evening Post magazine, he was quoted as saying, “There is no doubt in my mind but what these objects are aircraft of a strange design, and material that is unknown to the civilization of this earth.”

It stands to reason that the theory became ascendant early on. Sci-fi was popular in the movies and in pulp magazines. In the 1950s, there were a number of space opera shows on radio and TV, including “Captain Video” and “Space Patrol.” The presence of alien visitors was the stuff of several popular movies.

Sure, UFOs have been reported over the centuries, but we weren’t advanced enough then to understand their extraterrestrial origins. But that raises the question of how UFOs might be regarded a couple of centuries from now if the mystery persists.

Few dispute the fact that some 90-95% of all sightings can be readily explained by conventional objects or phenomena. In the days of Project Bluebook, the Air Force maintained that, if enough information were available, all of their so-called “Unknown” objects could be explained away too. But the sheer wealth of evidence seemed to indicate otherwise.

Unfortunately, time hasn’t been too kind to some classic UFO cases. The Thomas Mantell crash, touted by Major Donald Keyhoe and others as possibly caused by a flying saucer, may have actually been an unfortunate accident. The Roswell UFO crash might be more myth than fact as old evidence is reevaluated. What about the questions raised about the Rendlesham Forest UFO case and other purported encounters with the unknown?

Absent test aircraft and other conventional causes, just how many sightings can survive thorough reexaminations? As we learn more and more about the unreliability of eyewitness testimony, is it at all possible that far more UFO sightings can now be explained as mundane objects or phenomena?

Have government operatives advanced the UFO legend in order to drive attention away from the real cause — secret test aircraft?

All UFO cases?

It’s certainly helpful to solve as many UFO sightings as possible, but there remains a residue that is not so easily explained. That remains the core of the UFO mystery. Whether spaceships or something way beyond our understanding, things are happening around us that are decidedly unconventional.

Perhaps all or most classic sightings have conventional answers. But what about the cases that still defy understanding? Even if there were only a handful of true unknowns, that still means that we have a compelling mystery on our hands.
