I honestly expected some of you to take exception to my suggestion -- rather short of a theory -- that the late Barney and Betty Hill may have been the victims of some sort of government trick when they had their famous UFO encounter in the New Hampshire countryside several decades ago. This isnÂ?t the first time IÂ?ve voiced this suggestion on the show or in these pages, but I definitely feel I might be on to something, or at least the overall concept seems to make sense.
Beyond the Hills and perhaps some of those contactee claimants of the 1950s, where else can we see examples of possible government intervention? Well, consider one of the major UFO research organizations of the period, NICAP, the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena.
Some of us in those days questioned the fashion in which the late UFO writer, Major Donald E. Keyhoe, took over as director and then populated the groupÂ?s board with loads of ex-military figures, including a former head of the CIA. While all of these people had an undeniable level of expertise in their various fields, you have to wonder why a group supposedly fighting UFO secrecy was made up of some of the people who may have been responsible for it in the first place?
Call it a conspiracy theory, but some civilian UFO researchers suggested that NICAP was so focused on their supposed efforts to stop the Â?Silence Group,Â? the government agency or individuals that were allegedly responsible for the secrecy, that they werenÂ?t spending much time or resources figuring out what was behind the mystery. If NICAP was a government front, of course, that posture would be perfectly understandable.
But government involvement may be far more devious, if there is a real disinformation campaign afoot. NICAPÂ?s possible involvement would seem a little too obvious, so youÂ?d think that they could do better.
In the years after NICAPÂ?s heyday, consider the MJ-12 document avalanche. MJ-12 was supposed to be a group established to evaluate key UFO evidence, but the reality is mired in controversy. There is actually no independent evidence that an MJ-12 ever existed beyond certain documents, some of which were declared to be obvious hoaxes. Even the papers that some researchers regard as valid exhibit strange clues, as if someone was having one huge laugh over the whole affair.
A prime example: One of the purported members was none other than the late Dr. Donald Menzel, a Harvard astronomer who was notorious for being a rabid UFO skeptic. He wrote several books attacking the prospects of UFO reality, and made a number of public appearances on the subject. But he was also a talented artist, one who created some excellent pictures depicting possible aliens.
Now those who think Dr. Menzel was involved in a secret UFO project will remind us that he, as is the case of many scientists of that era, worked in military intelligence during World War II. I donÂ?t dispute that claim, but it may be a stretch to say that he continued to work behind the scenes in the UFO field after his assignment was complete. Beyond those MJ-12 documents, there is no evidence of any such involvement.
There are other possible indications of government fakery in the UFO field. Did the late Colonel Philip Corso really function as a bag man for the Army to deliver alien technology into civilian hands? Or was that claim, in the book Â?The Day After Roswell,Â? merely his final great assignment for his government employers, one that involved further confusing and befuddling the UFO field?
I agree with one of the guests on The Paracast a couple of years back, that government disinformation policy hides in plain sight. Regardless of the truth about such shenanigans, it continues to be extremely difficult to separate the signal from the noise in UFO research.
