Revisiting Earth-Made UFOs
By Gene Steinberg

Back in the 1950s, when many people believed that UFOs must be advanced aircraft from other planets, one prominent researcher began to suggest that they were Earth-based, probably built by the U.S. government. That researcher was none other than Jim Moseley, editor of what was then known as “Saucer News.” Years later, he turned that magazine into a monthly newsletter, “Saucer Smear.”

Jim continued to argue the theory with enthusiasm for several years, but maybe it was all a prank. Some years later, he admitted that he adopted a contrary viewpoint as part of his fake feud with his close friend, Gray Barker. Jim’s most recent turn on the source of the UFO mystery is closer to the 4D theory, that the cases classified as unknowns were most probably from another reality or dimension, or a force, beyond our understanding, which continues to interact with us in all sorts of ways. But he didn’t dismiss the possibility of being visited by ET.

Jim was surely not the only Earth theory supporter. One of the more prominent supporters of the possibility that at least some UFOs were Earth-made is author Joseph P. Farrell. Dr. Farrell has written or co-written some 15 books that cover a wide range of subjects that include secret Nazi technology, the military-industrial complex, international banking conspiracies, the Roswell crash and lots more.

For the sake of this discussion, I’m most interested in his viewpoints about UFOs, particularly the theory that the Roswell UFO crash was caused by a test aircraft of some sort, one that may have even used technology developed by the Nazis in World War II, or by refugee scientists from the Hitler regime who fled to Argentina.
You’d think, in passing, that a test aircraft would be a better excuse than a balloon. In any case, Dr. Farrell also suggests that some of the other classic UFO cases of the era, including the Kenneth Arnold sighting, and the aircraft seen over Washington, D.C. in 1952, were also secret aircraft of this sort.

Now I won’t get into his other theories, such as the possibility that there has been a secret space program. This is a theory voiced by others, but proof is obviously lacking. Certainly sci-fi stories have considered the possibility. Consider the movie, “Stargate,” and the TV spinoffs, in which a secret military group is using a device developed by advanced aliens to travel across the stars. Well, at least it’s fast, and you don’t have to worry about artificial gravity and warp drive, though I’d miss the holodeck.

To be perfectly fair, the possibility that some UFOs may have been secret test aircraft doesn’t mean there is no mystery. It is very possibility that only a small portion of the unidentified sightings involved such craft. There’s no real reason to assume that the remainder of the cases that we can’t identify don’t come from some outside source, whether aliens, inter-dimensional travelers, or even time travelers. There is still an awful lot we don’t know about UFOs, and it may well be that there are several solutions, which combine to make the mystery all the more intriguing and difficult to understand.

Of course, when you consider the possibility of an Earth-made UFO, you have to wonder just how far this idea can go. At the very least, the U2 spy plane, stealth aircraft and other conventional objects have, over the years, been misidentified as unknowns. But what might the U.S. government or private industry be doing beyond experimenting with advanced aircraft?

Well, let’s assume they really want you to believe that this test aircraft might be of alien origin to divert attention from what’s really going on, or as a sort of psychological warfare experiment. What might they be doing aside from flying those things? What about staging UFO abductions or contacts with alleged space people in the desert?

When George Adamski claimed he met up with a human-like in 1952, could he have been describing a real encounter of some sort? And if so, was that being really just an Earthling wearing a silvery uniform, similar to what Klaatu wore in the classic sci-fi film, “The Day the Earth Stood Still”?

Another contactee, Orfeo Angelucci, told the story of meeting an alleged alien in a diner. After consuming a steak dinner with his newfound friend, Angelucci said the alien turned a glass of water into a “rare champagne” by inserting an effervescent white pellet into the glass. Just what did that drink really contain, and was it something that might have, with appropriate verbal suggestions, created an hallucination involving an extraordinary encounter with the space people? Besides, why assume that Angelucci’s visitor wasn’t really some disinformation agent, or perhaps a private individual perpetrating a hoax to advance some sort of personal agenda?

At one time, contactee Howard Menger, labeled by some as “the Jersey Adamski,” said he felt he might have been the victim of some sort of government experiment. But this is a point of view that Menger dropped in his later years, as he attempted to build his own model flying saucer.

Does that mean I believe all or most of the classic contactee claims were really government tricksters of some sort? Not necessarily. Maybe they were all tall tales, maybe some were deluded, maybe a very few involved some sort of paranormal encounter that they conveyed in what they felt was a more acceptable form. But it is quite possible that at least some of these reports were faked by our own government. What a strange state of affairs.

Important! As I write this, my old and dear friend Jim Moseley is being treated for cancer at a Key West, FL hospital. While I am hoping and praying he’ll get well soon, he remains seriously ill. He needs all of our prayers and well wishes.

It's too bad about Jim. I think that aging and disease are cruel and unusual forms of punishment and I wish him all the best in surviving the ordeal. On the issue of the ETH; just a reminder that the ETH is technically not limited to the idea of space travelers from another planet. Extraterrestrial simply means from someplace other than Earth. Therefore some theories can be nested under the general heading of the ETH, e.g. Transuniversal, Cosmic Nomads, and Transient Reality. Secret Nazi Hypothesis ... not so much.
