Martin has been fascinated with the subject of UFOs since his youth, yet he was on the fence about the subject until he experienced a personal sighting in 2006 in Carmel Valley, CA. Martin thinks we may never find out what people are really seeing, but in his opinion, it is a most important and exciting puzzle to solve. What if the UFOs “Took a Hike”?

On the surface, it does appear as if the flying saucers, UFOs, UAPs, or whatever you wish to call them, are as busy as ever confounding humans. After all, researchers continue to collect loads of sightings to examine.
On our After The Paracast podcast -- an exclusive feature of The Paracast+ -- we have of late featured sighting reports collected by William Puckett. He’s a long-time researcher and retired atmospheric scientist. So he has the ability to interpret the data, including radar reports, to ferret out the most compelling cases.
If you are a subscriber to The Paracast+, you’ll notice that, despite the ebb and flow, he never runs out of sightings to talk about.
Now his analyses are fairly quick, to collect cases that invite further review. It is quite possible many of those sightings will end up having conventional explanations. Maybe it’s about misinterpreted weather phenomena, a star or a planet, or perhaps a perfectly normal airplane.
Now I suppose some of those UFOs may also be caused by test aircraft, although I wonder why the military would dare to fly them in places where they can be easily seen by the public.
But there are elaborate theories that we might not be seeing the UFOs as they truly are, that ET or whatever is responsible for their appearance, cloaks them in ways that make them friendlier, or at least recognizable, to human eyes.
But that suggestion not only assumes they are real, but that they force behind them is making them appear that way for our benefit.
That, of course, raises all sorts of questions about who or what they are, and why they have any interest in us at all.
It may also be that we are dealing with a mystery that is far more difficult to crack, involving a source that doesn’t represent an intelligent race from another star system but something far more bizarre.
Maybe we are responsible, our collective unconscious creating the modern myth of strange flying objects. And what about co-creation, that both humans and an unknown force are somehow working together in the background to produce those illusions.
That theory, of course, appears to ignore the very obvious physical effects from the presence of UFOs, such as possible trace evidence left on the surface from some strange craft that briefly landed.
And what about people who may have come in contact with a UFO, thus suffering from some nasty effects? Consider the 1980 Cash-Lundrum incident, where one of the witnesses suffered from an ailment that appears to resemble radiation poisoning. Consider, too, the impact to John Burroughs, one of the servicemen involved in the Rendlesham Forest episode.
For Burroughs, the situation was more complicated due to government red tape. Not only did he suffer from a debilitating illness, but he had to call in legal help to force the VA to pay for his treatment.
These two sightings, considered classic cases, make it clear that something physical and possibly dangerous was involved.
Now this all assumes that UFOs are real and mostly of unknown origin. It also assumes that they are still here doing their thing, and we are no closer to figuring out what’s really going on. Indeed, it seems that UFO reseachers are largely collecting sighings rather than looking at the evidence to take us closer to solving the mystery.
Our friend William is, to be sure, making an honest effort to separate the most compelling cases and put them aside for further study. He is one of a number of lone-wolf researchers around the world trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together.
At the very least, that appears to be far better than the way such UFO clubs as MUFON act on these sightings. They are quick to collect a report, or encourage witnesses to report their sightings online.
But it seems that MUFON is more interested in evangelizing the possibility of extraterrestrial visitors, as if the mystery is already solved.
Add to the mix UFO abductions, cases where individuals find themselves apparently kidnapped by aliens, taken aboard a spaceship, and subjected to sometimes painful physical experiments.
It sure seems that we continue to confront what may be the most significant mystery of all.
And what about the growing realization that life may be abundant in our galaxy? It doesn’t take much of a stretch to regard the discovery of extrasolar planets with possible Earth-like conditions and extrapolate the existence of possibly advanced beings that just might include our planet in their travel plans.
From there, you can come up with all sorts of motives to explain their ongoing interest in our affairs.
Other theories include interdimensional beings, but that merely changes the source, not the reality. Instead of another planet, they travel across realities.
Or perhaps it’s a case of both.
More elaborate theories include time travelers, our future selves racing through the timestream to see history firsthand.
But time travel opens a whole new can of worms, such as the possible impact of their presence in the past on their future. It’s a common trope in sci-fi stories, that the humans of the future are coming here to right wrongs, or make changes strictly for their benefit.
One theory has it that a change to the timestream, however subtle, may actually open up a whole new universe rather than impact the existing one.
No, I’m not ignoring the very real possibility that some UFOs are actually test aircraft of one sort or another.
All of these ideas posit the existence of an ongoing mystery that remains unsolved, that the UFOs are still present and accounted for.
But what if ET has left the building?
It sure seems that the most compelling cases happened years ago. Even if you ignore the possibilities of the Roswell crash, there is the 1952 Washington, DC radar/visual sighitngs, the 1964 Socorro, NM case, Cash-Landrum, Rendlesham, and so on and so forth.
With rare exceptions, it sure seems that the cases reported in recent years are far less compelling.
Now maybe it’s just that we’ve become more expert at separating the cases that have conventional explanations, leaving fewer numbers of unknowns.
But what if it’s true that the UFO mystery largely or completely represents the presence of unknown objects in the past?
It would mean that today’s unknowns can all be explained if we had more information, or considered ongoing test flights by advanced military aircraft.
Abductions? Well, maybe they are caused by something quite unrelated to the presence of physical flying saucers and gray aliens.
It doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t continue to attempt to solve the UFO mystery. But if it’s all in the past, that itself would be quite discouraging. Or maybe they will be back sometime in our future.
I surely hope it happens before I’m no longer around to consider such possibilities.
