Creatures From Here or There or Somewhere
By Gene Steinberg
I suppose that a lot of you will, when Bigfoot is mentioned, think of that big hairy and filthy creature who comes from the insides of a dark forest, a mountaintop, or somewhere else that’s not so readily identified.
So where is that somewhere else?
Well, in last week’s column, I wrote about alternate explanations for UFOs other than spaceships from out there or conventional objects and phenomena. I suggested another dimension as one possibility, a place that may coexist with ours, but can only be reached due to some sort of anomaly that opens a dimensional portal, or a piece of technology that lets you go from there to here and back again.
But when you consider Bigfoot, Yeti, the Loch Ness Monster or any of those strange creatures seen from time to time, it’s it fair to think they are not of this Earth, that they come from some other place? That’s a non-uncommon cultural meme that’s quite prevalent in the paranormal field. Maybe not such much Nessie, but certainly the other creatures.
This, though, is not necessarily a theory that cryptozoologists necessarily hold.
The conventional definition of cryptozoology very much resembles this one: “The study of evidence tending to substantiate the existence of, or the search for, creatures whose reported existence is unproved, as the Abominable Snowman or the Loch Ness monster.”
Nothing in that definition means that these creatures must originate on other worlds, dimensions, or whatever. It’s simply about creatures whose existence has not as yet been proven, and that surely does apply to Bigfoot and all the rest. If proof comes, however, does that mean it must represent something that’s originally off-planet?
Pioneer cryptozoologist Loren Coleman, the guest on this week’s episode of The Paracast, regards these creatures as just unknown species that are indigenous to this world. Despite the all-too-common belief that we know everything there is to know about the living creatures that populate the Earth, the fact of the matter is that discoveries are still being made. So it may well be that, some day, Bigfoot and its ilk will just be regarded as rare but genuine creatures that somehow managed to elude discovery for many years.
I suppose the concept of an Earth-based creature of that sort may not seem quite as romantic as an extraterrestrial visitor, or some creature from another unknown realm, but that doesn’t mean the discovery shouldn’t be an exciting development. Science marches on, and there are surely many incredible opportunities for discovery on our own planet.
But that doesn’t mean there is nothing paranormal about any of these creatures, or that there are no window or portal areas that attract visitors from elsewhere. That some regions of the world seem more sensitive to the presence of strange creatures and UFOs does mean those locales deserve further study.
So, for example, our own Christopher O’Brien’s intensive study of the Mysterious Valley yielded numerous cases of strange events of all kinds. Although he no longer lives there, he continues to keep close tabs on the goings on and returns often to explore new cases and continue to seek some answers.
Now it may well be that everything Chris has investigated will have a conventional or mundane explanation once we have all the answers. Maybe there are no crypto-creatures from outer space, or UFOs from Tau Ceti or some other region of the galaxy. It’s a sure thing that there is an awful lot that we do not know about our world, even though the science of the day — any day — will continue to believe that all of the key mysteries have been solved. So they are just filling in the details.
They said that 100 years ago, and didn’t one patent official once suggest that everything important had been invented already? Certainly, Samsung might have hoped that to be the case after learning that they have been ordered to pay Apple Inc. $119.6 million for infringing on two patents in a Northern California Federal Court. After all, if everything has been invented already, just what was that jury thinking about when they cast their lot mostly with Apple?
Of course, I don’t believe in such limited views of our universe. Having just gone through a seriously annoying medical test — a colonoscopy — I have to wonder whether there isn’t really a more advanced technique to provide comprehensive scanning and treatment for one’s digestive system. Sure, there’s reason for the physical presence of instrumentation, to remove possible polyps and perform other procedures, but the entire preparation process, which involves a rapid cleaning of one’s digestive tract, seems so primitive. This is the 21st century. Why must it be that way?
I think of one of the more outrageous scenes in the often funny 1986 movie, “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home,” where Captain Kirk and crew return to the late 20th century for a mission to save Earth of the 23rd century. Towards the end of the film, they are racing through a hospital to rescue Ensign Chekhov from his captors. Medical officer Dr. McCoy encounters an elderly woman who is about to undergo kidney dialysis. “Dialysis?” McCoy announces with disdain. He ends up giving the woman a pill, and, moments later she’s cured. Just a pill.
Is there any doubt that this funny scene had more than a little truth to it? Even 25 years from now, advances in medical science will no doubt make our physicians seem like helpless primitives.
The long and short of it is that it is the height of ego to think that we have a thorough understanding of our own planet or its denizens. So it may well be that Loren Coleman’s theory that Bigfoot and other such creatures represent unknown species that will ultimately be confirmed as real beings that exist here on Earth is right on. Nothing otherworldly about it.
The same may likely be true for Nessie, if we can get the creature or creatures to emerge from their hiding spaces deep within the Loch long enough to allow us to learn more about them. But I wonder about the so-called scientists who, up till now, have maintained that it’s all just smoke and mirrors and that such creatures cannot possibly exist. Maybe they have the same mindset of that person who once suggested that everything important had already been invented.
