This Week's Episode: Gene and guest cohost Tim Swartz present an evening with UFO researcher and publisher Philip Mantle, to discuss his book, "UFO Landings UK." The book looks at UFO landing cases in the UK only (with the addition of the Republic of Ireland) beginning long before the modern era of UFOs began in 1947 right the way through to today. Case histories are separated into decades and come complete with photographs, documents, artwork and much more. The case histories featured in this book are looked at for their ‘high strangeness’ value. Mantle is an international UFO researcher, lecturer and broadcaster. His books have been published in six different languages around the world. He is the former Director of Investigations for the British UFO Research Association and former MUFON representative for England. Philip has written articles and features for numerous publications around the world and has been both editor and assistant editor of high street UFO publications. He is the founder of Flying Disk Press.

After The Paracast — Available exclusively for Paracast+ subscribers on May 29: UFO researcher/publisher/author Philip Mantle returns to discuss sci-fi pop culture with Gene and guest cohost Tim Swartz. The inventions depicted in the various Star Trek TV shows and movies over the years that have come to pass, or are close to coming to pass, are explored. Mantle also tells the story of how he founded his publishing company, Flying Disk Press, and some of its recent books, such as Calvin Parker's "Pascagoula — The Closest Encounter: My Story" and "Pascagoula — The Story Continues: New Evidence & New Witnesses." Mantle also reveals details about upcoming books. He began his active involvement in Ufology in the UK in 1980 when he joined the newly formed Yorkshire UFO Society. One of the first UFO cases that he investigated was that of a landing case in the West Yorkshire town of Normanton in England. This incident took place only a few miles from where he lived.

Ignoring the Biggest Story of the Ages
By Gene Steinberg

To most people, whenever they are asked about UFOs — or UAPs or flying saucers — they assume people are talking about spaceships. Some believe, some disbelieve, but that’s the way it goes.

Now as much as I’ve been on the fence about the nature of UFOs, I’ll go there for the sake of argument.

So let’s assume, then, that we are being visited by advanced beings from outer space. It may represent one species or — if you can take the various creature sightings at face value — a number of them.

One thing is certain, however, and that is that they must be far more advanced scientifically than we are. How else would they be able to travel here from wherever they come?

You can consider the idealized Foundation from the Star Trek stories. After centuries of tribal warfare, different worlds have come together to promote peace and explore the galaxy. They now look outward at the larger universe.

Of course, Star Trek isn’t all about peace. Their spaceships are equipped with advanced weaponry, and seem to be under attack in nearly every episode.

Regardless, let’s bring it home.

When you consider what is happening around us, you have to wonder what impact it might have. Right now, aside from a small number of devoted believers who have had their lives changed as the result of a sighting or just being exposed to UFO sighting reports, the answer is not much.

If it is confirmed that we are being visited by ET, you’d expect it to be a world-changing event. Imagine the benefits of communicating with them, the advances in science, technology, medicine.

All right, I’ll set aside the energy industry and organized religion. Oil companies will try to find a way to exploit the new technology, while religious leaders will simply proclaim them as God’s children regardless of what they really believe.

Think about medicine for the moment. Over the past year, I have been treated for various forms of heart disease. I now have a stent in my heart and in my left leg. I take powerful pills to keep from succumbing to a heart attack or a stroke, and my situation is not uncommon.

I have a close relative, in his 50s, awaiting a kidney transplant. Now here the Star Trek connection comes in again. In the 1986 movie, “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home,” there’s a funny scene in a hospital in the latter part of the movie, where Dr. McCoy sees a woman waiting for dialysis, and he hands her a pill. A short time later, and she is cured.

On a lesser level, how often do you see scenes in a starship’s sickbay, where someone with cuts and bruises has them magically healed when they are scanned by a simple probe?

So if we are being visited by ET, could they bring us advanced medical knowledge on how to cure diseases, repair defective hearts and kidneys, not to mention a cure for cancer? What indeed?

On the other hand, maybe it’s true that our visitors have a sort of “prime directive,” in which they cannot interfere with the affairs of the primitives inhabiting underdeveloped worlds.

Well, that one doesn’t hold up. The mere presence of UFOs in our skies, and its ongoing impact, would surely be a violation of the sort of prime directive that was part of Star Trek. Of course, that didn’t stop the captains of the various iterations of the Enterprise from interfering to fill a hole in the plot.

But let’s go there anyway. ET doesn’t want to get involved.

So how does that explain UFO abductions, contacts, alleged channeling with higher beings? If they didn’t want to interfere, that’s a poor way to show it. Of course, one can always assume there are other causes for these experiences that have nothing whatever to do with ET.

The long and short is that we have no way of knowing what their motives might be, their purposes for being here. Perhaps it is simple exploration. Perhaps we are a training ground for advanced races to perform experiments on the locals and record what happens. Maybe young ETs are simply undergoing training missions. Or maybe their motives are truly alien, beyond our understanding.

How would we know?

Of course, the UFO mystery could be solved tomorrow if a massed landing were staged. But since that has yet to occur, it’s likely it’ll never happen.

Indeed, I have, on occasion, suggested on The Paracast that if the President of the United States trotted out an alien during a press conference, half of the public would believe it’s just a trick. If ET streamed their own broadcast — in the manner depicted in the 1956 film “Earth Versus the Flying Saucers” or even the Superman origin story from 2013, “Man of Steel” — that would be regarded as some sort of hacking attempt.

After decades, hearings on the UFO conundrum were held in the U.S. Congress for 90 minutes on May 17, 2022. Despite all the anticipation, the expectations, very little was accomplished other than a pledge by Pentagon representatives to seriously investigate the phenomenon.

Spaceships? No evidence. Advanced aircraft from other countries? No evidence. You get the picture. They admitted nothing about a possible solution.

While disclosure advocates might have cheered before the hearings were held, there was little to cheer about when they were over. It was a bust, getting at best middling coverage on the cable news networks, and in newspapers.

The story of the ages? Hardly.

Of course, Earth is a pretty messy place right now. We have a pandemic, which ebbs and flows. There is war in the Ukraine, with fears of a wider conflict. Fuel is costly, inflation keeps rising, and the latter two are not problems in strictly one country as some might suggest. It is happening around the world.

As I write this, people are mourning the deaths of 21 people, including 19 young students, as a result of the latest school shooting in the U.S.

If ET is watching Earthlings, how should we expect them to act? Would they want to get involved in our business, or just stay out of the way and let us solve — or worsen — our own problems?

Some UFO believers claim that ET truly cares about us and wants to help us embrace peace and brotherhood. But if that’s true, our visitors are feckless. There may be a desperate need for outside intervention — if it exists — but nothing is happening.

So if UFOs are extraterrestrial, it’s a sure thing they don’t care about what is happening on this little planet. Some might suggest we make the first move by solving our own problems. If that’s what they expect, none of us will live to see it happen.
