Please ask one of your local talk stations if they are interested in carrying The Paracast. Feel free to contact us directly with the names of programming people we might be able to contact on your behalf. Another Look at the World of Disinformation
By Gene Steinberg

For people who specialize in examining possible government conspiracies, the UFO mystery is a ripe area for study. From the late 1940s until the present day, it was believed that those in power in the U.S. had guilty knowledge that flying saucers are real, and that they are extraterrestrial visitors.

The solution is simple: Persuade those in the know to disclose all these secrets. We’re adults. We can take it, or at least that’s what some believe.

Now forgetting the reality, you wonder what any government really knows about UFOs. Do they have evidence of one or more UFOs that crashed and were retrieved for study? What about the pilots? Do we really have ET on ice? Were they once living creatures, or robotic entities designed to handle the heavy lifting of travel among the stars? At the end of the day, would it make a difference? Where does organic life end and robotic life forms begin? What about the sci-fi concept of downloading one’s intellect and soul into some sort of machine that can endure the trials and tribulations of space travel, only to be reintegrated with their organic forms when they reach their destination -- or return home?

Regardless of what the authorities allegedly know, do they have a serious interest in letting the public in on the secret, or have they discovered something so frightening, so disrupting of our civilization, that it must be kept under wraps at all costs?

Well, do you remember how the U.S. government handled the reality of alien visitation in the popcorn thriller, “Independence Day?” They kept the truth a secret for as long as possible until the press of events, alien motherships circling major cities around the world, forced the issue. But since the aliens in that movie were here to destroy us, the revelation of danger came too late, because the populace didn’t have time to flee the major cities before disaster struck. The guilt-ridden American President, portrayed in an earnest fashion by Bull Pullman, at one point feared he had waited too long to issue the evacuation warning, which meant that millions of citizens died needlessly. So was that supposed to be an impeachable offense?

In our real world, just how would our governments deal with the frightening evidence that invaders were in our midst? Would they keep it a secret as long as possible, or at least until potential defenses were perfected? Would they hope to bury the truth long enough for their successors to deal with the problem? If they knew the end was near, maybe they just keep it quiet, hoping our deaths would all be peaceful, so we could continue to exist in full ignorance of our impending doom without suffering needlessly during the final days.

It’s a dilemma that would surely keep those in charge awake at night, assuming any of it was true. But even if ET’s intent was peaceful, or at least unknown, at what point would our leaders conclude that disclosure was necessary? Or would they hope the press of outside events would relieve them of any such obligation? “Well, we really didn’t know they were actually here. We thought it was all just optical illusions or pranks.”

Even if governments wanted to disclose this alleged truth, how would it be done? Would it involve a shared media event by several governments, or the one who chose to be first to the podium? Considering the possible consequences to industry and various religions, not to mention individuals who’d find it difficult to handle the news that we are not alone, what about taking a slow and gentle approach?

With gradual disclosure, perhaps we’d see more and more evidence that our space probes have uncovered evidence of life elsewhere, such as water on Mars. Astronomers would periodically reveal evidence of possible life-bearing planets circling other star systems. It wouldn’t take much of a stretch to imagine that the life on some of those worlds might have developed civilizations that are capable of traveling through interstellar space. That, of course, means to Earth. Once we accept the reality, it wouldn’t take much of a stretch to realize first contact had already occurred.

But some followers of the UFO enigma believe that disclosure is being handled in another way, with various alleged whistleblowers releasing loads of facts mixed with fiction online or to certain researchers. That way, the truth is out there, but only available to those who can find the signals among the noise. Consider this hiding in plain sight, but what’s the point?

So we have various and sundry forms of MJ-12 documents that speak of top secret high-level committees investigating Roswell and other alleged UFO crash/retrievals. Most are fake, some of them might be genuine, but to what end? Or is it all meant to send UFO researchers scurrying down rabbit holes believing in conspiracies that have little or nothing to do with reality?

Again, what’s the point?

Some speak of plausible deniability. Government officials can say the truth has been out there all along, and they have nothing to hide. Or perhaps rogue members of certain intelligence agencies get their jollies off confusing and befuddling people with the goal of -- what?

Again, what’s the point?

As a practical matter, if there really is some world-changing truth behind all this nonsense, one might think it could be disclosed in a more logical fashion. But that assumes there’s an end game that makes any sense.

In the old days, two of my close friends, Jim Moseley and Gray Barker (both now departed), engaged in their own disinformation campaigns on occasion with fake letters, fake sightings and fake UFO movies. I suppose they had a goal: To see how people would react to the silly hoaxes they devised during marathon drinking sessions.

All right, some believed that Moseley, the wealthy son of a retired Army Major General, was, in fact, secretly tied to intelligence agencies and doing their bidding. I knew Moseley for many years, and he struck me as the polar opposite of a disinformation agent. I suppose he could have fooled me all along, but why? I never took any of that nonsense seriously.

But I have to wonder if some of the modern-day UFO or UFO disinformation pranksters are engaging in the very same behavior.ve them.

Add one more layer to the robot scenario though.

Lets say someone you know was taking a box of music CD's to the dump, didnt want them anymore and was throwing them out.
Would it not be logical to say dont waste those, give them to me i can use them.

For species that have already evolved beyond the biological, it might perhaps seem perfectly logical to recycle our conciousness component when our bioforms break down.

They could use them to animate the robots, and wasting our individual experiential database's may seem unthinkable to entitys in that paradigm.

Assimilating such experiential data into their collective would enhance that collective.

What if thats the secret ?

Would you tell ?

The religions of the world would go up in flames

Resistance would be futile, but it would still be the base reaction of the majority.

When ventures into the realm of disinformation theories it doesn't take long before it becomes obvious that it's not just as simple as fake homemade YouTube videos. Let's take a minute to consider Gene's first example, the MJ-12 documents. When the MJ-12 documents first began circulating I was suspect of them because they are only documents, and documents in and of themselves prove nothing. I was even among those who suggested that they could be a clever counter-disinformation scheme by members of the ufology community for the purpose of evoking an official government response. If that is true then its architects deserve some serious praise. If not, then why were they created? Were they planted by skeptics to make fools of the ufologists? To my knowledge, nobody with verifiable evidence has taken credit for that yet, so it seems really unlikely.

Were they created for the purpose of making money selling books and copies to researchers? If so, I don't see evidence that anyone has made any serious money off them. Stan Friedman probably stood to gain the most, but he's hardly rolling in dough. Besides, even if he was in on it, he strikes me more as the type to have done it for counter-disinformation purposes than greed anyway. Neither scenario plays out as very realistic, not to mention that Stan denies having been involved in the making of any hoax, regardless of how brilliant it might have been.

So what's left? Did some official agency plant them there to bait researchers who could later be discredited? If that's the case, then it's a fairly sophisticated scheme, and it gives rise to the question of which official agency would be involved. This is where the logic gets interesting. If it was done by one of our agencies, then it was obviously done as in intelligence exercise to track the way that the information percolated. But there is a final option that is rarely considered. What if they were planted by a foreign agency? That strategy would serve a triple purpose by evoking governmental response, tracking the flow of information, and using the ufology community as a blind proxy for doing much of the work, while the real shadow people remain behind the curtain collecting the intel.

So where does that leave the ufologists? For one thing, it shows why agencies that have no real interest in UFOs would want to keep tabs on UFO researchers, and why we can't be told the whole truth when making certain inquiries. Plus, if the UFO problem was this complex then ( and there's no reason to think it wasn't ), imagine what we're dealing with now. Ironically, the UFOs themselves are also snared in this web of intrigue. So what do we do? If we treat the intelligence and disinformation game as series of layers ( to borrow a Photoshop expression ), and then turn them off, we're still left with a history of alien craft in the skies of Planet Earth, or to borrow a more colloquial expression, let's keep our eye on the doughnut and not the hole.
