This Week's Episode: Gene and guest cohost Tim Swartz introduce James McClenon Ph.D., a sociology professor and licensed clinical social worker. He is author of these books: Deviant Science: The Case of Parapsychology, Wondrous Events: Foundations of Religious Belief, Wondrous Healing: Shamanism, Human Evolution, and the Origin of Religion, and The Entity Letters: A Sociologist on the Trail of a Supernatural Mystery. The book, The Entity Letters, details a group of individuals, the SORRAT sitter group (Society for Research on Rapport and Telekinesis) who between 1961 and 2017 were actively engaged in a variety of spiritualistic practices involving a wide range of apparent paranormal, physical phenomena that include table tipping and levitation, poltergeist phenomena, earthquake effects and rapping.

After The Paracast — Available exclusively for Paracast+ subscribers on March 20: Gene and special guest cohost Tim Swartz welcome James McClenon Ph.D. for a return visit. During this episode, Dr. McClenon talks about such topics as precognition, near-death experiences and their relation to possible UFO abductions, and psychological symptoms related to paranormal encounters. His main focus, as with the main show, was his book, The Entity Letters, which details a group of individuals, the SORRAT sitter group (Society for Research on Rapport and Telekinesis). He began his own investigations into the world of the unknown in 1981, faithfully documenting his experiences with the group from the viewpoint of a sociologist. Originally from Maryland, he has lived in Ecuador, China, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia and North Carolina, and travels extensively.

We Answer Your Questions — 2022 Edition
By Gene Steinberg

In recent months, since The Paracast added a new slate of cohosts: Curt Collins, Tim Swartz and Bob Zanotti. What’s more, a number of new listeners have joined us. So I think it’s time that we talk about the show, where we are and where we are going.

And answer some of your common questions. So:

Q. Your request for donations to the show claims that you aren’t paid for network ads. But who does get paid for all the advertising you run?

A. Our deal with our network, GCN, is what’s referred to in the radio business as “barter,” meaning that they carry The Paracast, and we include their ads. But we aren’t paid for them or the show.

We are given one minute on most commercial breaks to sell our own advertising. But without a dedicated, experienced sales staff, this has yet to prove productive. For now we mostly run our own ads, plus a few we exchange with others.

But if you enjoy The Paracast, have experience as an ad salesperson and are willing to help, we’d love to hear from you. It’s probably not enough work for a full-time job, but if you have the spare time and want to give it a whirl, just let us know. Write to [email protected]; a resume will be helpful.

Q. I’m tired of fast-forwarding through the ads, but I love The Paracast. Do you have a better solution?

A. Yes. The Paracast+. It’s a premium subscription package that includes a special version of the show without the network ads. We also offer it at a higher bit rate, direct from the original, master recording, for the best audio quality.

In addition, we feature the exclusive After The Paracast podcast, which is uncensored since it doesn’t have to follow FCC rules for terrestrial radio. Sometimes After The Paracast features a continuation of an interview that began on the regular episode of The Paracast; sometimes it’s different. You never know what to expect, nor do we.

We also offer extra feature recordings, such as an episode of Coffee Klatch, a show that our staff announcer, Bob Zanotti, hosted back in the 1960s. More of Bob’s shows will be added, and they include vintage interviews with UFO and paranormal figures who are no longer with us, such as Jim Moseley, Gray Barker and, coming shortly, Ivan T. Sanderson.

Q. Sounds great! How do I sign up?

A. It takes just a couple of minutes to become a subscriber. Please visit: Choose Your Membership Upgrade to sign up. If you’re not a member of our forums, you’ll be asked to join when you subscribe.

Q. I’d like to join for a longer period, say five years or a lifetime? Give me an incentive.

A. All right, how’s this?

Use the coupon code ufo20 when you order one of our long-term subscription packages and you’ll save 20% from the regular price. It’s a limited offer, by the way.

In addition, depending on where you live and whether our payment processors, PayPal and Stripe (Credit or Debit Cards), consider you qualified (we have no control over that), you may have the option to pay for your Paracast+ subscription in monthly installments.

Both Apple Pay and Google Pay are available if you sign up with the email address you use for an Apple ID (and set up Apple Pay in the Wallet app), or your Google Play account. Or that’s what they tell us.

Q. Why the liberal politics?

A. Despite what you read in some of the comment panels on iTunes and other podcast sources, we seldom talk about politics, and we avoid partisan debate. And if we do get a little political, it’s mostly because it can’t be avoided when we talk about government investigations of UFOs, government secrecy, and similar topics.

Unfortunately, the anonymity of social networks and other comment resources means that people can say just about anything they want, and rarely face consequences. So we get some hyper-critical reviews. Sometimes they are right, sometimes they’re just blowing smoke. But that’s the price of being in the public arena.

Q. Why do you ask so many critical questions?

A. For the same reason the hosts of such TV shows as “60 Minutes” attempt to hold a guest’s feet to the fire. In trying to separate the signal from the noise, we do ask probing questions to better understand more about a topic, or just to see if a guest is being illogical or deceptive. Or a combination of both.

But when a guest is simply relating anecdotal paranormal encounters, we let them tell their story, and focus on questions that help them flesh out a description.

Q. Why are the forums not as active as they used to be?

A. There are so many places to post comments that it’s hard to find enough time to give any of them a lot of attention. Nowadays, social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter and TikTok, get the lion’s share of attention. But old fashioned forums, such as ours, allow for easier engagement and back and forth discussion. We don’t have the limits of those networks in the number of words, and managing back and forth discussions.

We do observe some common sense rules of the road, though, such as staying away from misinformation on such critical topics as the pandemic, and hate speech is always a no-no.

Q. Can I be a guest on The Paracast?

A. Perhaps. If you have written a book on the paranormal or a related subject, cover the beat as a reporter, or have had some mysterious encounters that you regard as significant, please write to us: [email protected].

Q. What about adding video?

A. One of our upcoming guests asked if he had to use his webcam: “Obviously if it's visual I'll scrub up a bit and keep the cats out of the room.”

Radio is, traditionally, the theater of the mind, and The Paracast exists in that realm. That doesn’t mean we won’t add some videos for subscribers to The Paracast+, but you probably won’t see me in any of them.

Q. Do you ever take a vacation?

A. What’s a vacation?
