Another Look at Screen Memories
By Gene Steinberg

The term “screen memory” is commonly used in UFO abduction research to describe a scheme or technology the abductors allegedly employ to shield the experiencer from remembering what really happened. Thus we have people who recall owl-like creatures and other oddities that may indicate some sort of repressed recollection of a particularly frightening event.

The alleged shielded memories are recovered often as the result of hypnotic regression. In most of these cases, the experiencer of a sudden recalls the lurid details of being captured by alien beings, usually taken aboard what appears to be a spaceship, and sometimes being subjected to physical examinations that may be painful.

There are loads of side issues regarding these claims, some of which indicate that those other beings, who are often in the image of the supposed “grays,” are here to do genetic testing. Some women describe being impregnated with an alien womb, and may thus give birth to a possible hybrid being that is part “them” and part “us.”

Now I wouldn’t presume to want to get into the possible obstacles in mixing our DNA with that of another race. Perhaps our visitors are closely related to us and interbreeding is not a difficult process. Given the possibility that we are dealing with a highly advanced race of beings, certainly genetic manipulation wouldn’t be beyond the realm of possibility in any case.

But let’s return to the screen memories, and the assumptions made about them. You see, I got to thinking about these possibilities during The Paracast’s interview with Derrel Sims, who calls himself “The Alien Hunter,” on last week’s episode.

Indeed, I asked Sims a question more than once about getting the concept of screen memories backwards, but he didn’t take the hint. It was too far out of his experience, and very likely something he hadn’t considered.

So what if the abduction event is, itself, a screen memory of some other sort of encounter?

Yes, what if the entire alien abduction experience, recalled with or without hypnotic “enhancement,” was itself something other than the real event? Isn’t it far too easy and convenient to assume that what one perceives as an anomalous physical event was, itself, a false memory?

I realize this may be a difficult concept to consider, because it raises all sorts of nasty questions that aren’t being asked. First and foremost, is the screen memory something an outside force is generating, or is it something that we create ourselves to shield ourselves from an event that’s extremely frightening, possibly alien?

One very basic possibility is that some or all of those UFO abductions involve an experiment on the part of the military or another government agency designed to see how the populace will react in the event of hands-0n contact by aliens. Of course there could be other reasons, but this is one that appears to make a little sense, at least for the sake of argument.

Now some listeners to The Paracast might recall that offhand suggestion I made on a few episodes a while back that maybe Barney and Betty Hill were the victims of a government testing program. Consider that they lived near a military base and could count military personnel among their personal friends. This sort of proximity might have made them a potential target for further study, or perhaps they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It’s clear there are question marks about the case. One is that alleged “star map,” displayed by the aliens on the spaceship, which some presume to indicate from where ET came? But even the concept of a star map, and its use by an advanced alien race, strains credibility.

Sure, these question marks might not have been rasied in the 1960s or 1970s, but consider using a computer (smartphone, tablet, traditional PC) and accessing Google Maps or Apple Maps to get the best route to the closest health food store.

All right, that’s a map. But nobody says you have to make a printout. You can even have the mapping or navigation system read the directions to you as you drive to your destination. Though once a luxury option, many of today’s compact cars can be ordered with navigation systems if you would rather not just use your Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy.

Now imagine a civilization that’s hundreds or thousands of years ahead of us and is using advanced navigation systems for star travel, not to mention travel within our atmosphere. A map? Give me a break!

That star map seems, for all intents and purposes, to be a gimmick that was presented for the benefit of the witnesses. In the real world, confronted with advanced alien technology, the Hills, hardly technically trained, would have been totally unable to understand the meaning of what they saw. Maybe they’d see 3D images of stars and planets displayed on a giant screen, but still!

One other possibility is that the abduction experience does represent some sort of paranormal encounter, but the core event is so alien or frightening that it is beyond our capability to understand. So our subconscious alters the details to make them acceptable, or maybe the details are externally manipulated.

There’s nothing strange about the concept. Don’t forget the sci-fi movie, “Contact,” based on the Carl Sagan novel. In that movie, the protagonist, an astronomer portrayed by Jodie Foster, meets ET, but sees him or it in the form of her late father. She is informed that the entity manifested itself that way so she could accept its appearance and communicate.

None of that, however, explains what the core abduction experience really is, but perhaps we simply interpret that experience in accordance with our culture. Certainly the experiences of the Hills served as the progenitor of many of the modern abduction experiences that came later.

None of this means all of these encounters have the same cause. None of this means that all of the recollections of these experiences are necessarily false. But it’s also true that there is an awful lot that we simply do not know about the workings of the human consciousness, and it may just be premature to take a strictly literal interpretation of these events.

Not beyond the realms of possibility

One of these areas is control of the human mind. The issues surrounding behaviour modification, mind control and information warfare become crystal clear as the facts unfold.

The following is taken from a current military document, "The Information Revolution and the Future Air Force" by Colonel John A. Warden III, USAF, which clarifies their position in the emerging area of research, taking a much different direction than the one described above:
"We’re currently experiencing, on an unprecedented global basis, three simultaneous revolutions, any one of which would be more than enough to shock and confound us. The first revolution, a geopolitical revolution, sees a single dominant power in the world for the first time since the fall of Rome. The opportunities that are inherent in this situation are extraordinary, as are the pitfalls. Unfortunately, there is no one around that has first hand experience in how to deal with that kind of single power dominant world.

"The second revolution, and there’s a lot of discussion about this so far, is the information revolution. As other people have mentioned, it is following inexorably in tandem behind Moore’s law of computing power. Attendant to it, though, is not the creation of new ideas and technologies, but also an exponential growth in the velocity of information dissemination, and for us that is of extraordinary importance. A key part of this information revolution has an awesome impact on competition. The business that introduced a new product ten years ago could count on probably five years before it had to look seriously at potential competitors based overseas. Today, you’re lucky if you can count on five months or even five weeks before you are facing the overseas competitor. In today’s world, success simply demands rapid introduction of successively new products or military systems. Success now goes to the organization which exploits information almost instantly, while failure is the near certain fate of the organization which tries to husband or hide ideas. Real simple—use it or you’re going to lose it.

"The third revolution, which is a little bit more complex, is the military/technological revolution, or in some places called the revolution in military affairs. I’m convinced that this is the first military technological revolution ever because we now have, for the first time, a conceptually different way to wage war. We can wage war in parallel now. In the past, communications and weapons technology, especially weapons accuracy, have constrained us to waging serial war. This changes almost everything.

"Biological Process Control:
As we look forward to the future, it seems likely that this nation will be involved in multiple conflicts where our military forces increasingly will be placed in situations where the application of full force capabilities of our military might cannot be applied. We will be involved intimately with hostile populations in situations where the application of non-lethal force will be the tactical or political preference. It appears likely that there are a number of physical agents that might actively, but largely benignly, interact or interfere with biological processes in an adversary in a manner that will provide our armed forces the tools to control these adversaries without extensive loss of life or property. These physical agents could include acoustic fields, optical fields, electromagnetic fields, and combinations thereof. This paper will address only the prospect of physical regulation of biological processes using electromagnetic fields.

"Prior to the mid-21st century, there will be a virtual explosion of knowledge in the field of neuroscience. We will have achieved a clear understanding of how the human brain works, how it really controls the various functions of the body, and how it can be manipulated (both positively and negatively). One can envision the development of electromagnetic energy sources, the output of which can be,
  • pulsed, shaped, and focused
  • that can couple with the human body in a fashion that will allow one to prevent voluntary muscular movements
  • control emotions (and thus actions)
  • produce sleep
  • transmit suggestions
  • interfere with both short-term and long-term memory
  • produce an experience set
  • delete an experience set

The next question in a MilAb scenario is why ET/abductions as the screen ?
Is it as Gene suggests to see how we react to the idea of close quarter contact with an ET species ?

That does seem more likely than simple cammoflage for something else.

Indeed the ET/abduction theme, is the antithesis of cammo. Its supposed to blend in, make it seem like nothing out of the ordinary is in your perceptions.

A screen memory of a trip to the store for some fresh milk and a loaf of bread, would be better accepted by the targets psyche.

If its the screen memory (of abduction) thats being exposed by regression hypnosis, then its the equivilent of painting a tank bright pink and parking it in a forest.

Perhaps its a recruitment test. The narrative does suggest people in or connected to the military suffer a high rate of abduction scenario's.

If they remain calm during the screen memory simulation, they get bumped up for actual duty with real ET's

You raised an interesting point Gene and in doing so bring up an issue that I’ve mentioned in several threads which always bothered me and made me question the whole concept of alien abduction, and that is with all the tech at the disposal of the visitors it never occurs to them to use some kind of process to render the abductees unconscious? Even we humans use anesthesia on animals when we perform experiments on them if not for moral reasons as much as to facilitate the process. It’s also a good idea to do so, just in case the case study decides to pull out a samurai sword and run us through or render us in two.

Also In interest of full disclosure I’ll admit that I’m not up to speed on many aspects of AA, but wasn’t as recently as the 70s and earlier or so…if you can call that recent…. it was all about snapping up people and telling any hapless abductee about where they are from “I’d like to tell you more but you wouldn’t understand, you’re not ready yet”,or the uninvited visitors were spouting vague, obscure warnings about mankind’s degradation of the planet and how man is on a collision course with his own demise, (sometimes there was a little nookie involved as well) and now it’s all about sadistic little greys …possibility robotic drones…performing supposed experiments on individuals while allowing them to remain alert and experience pain and trauma so that they could recall every little detail…albeit under a questionable practice such as hypnotic regression. I think it was RPJ who suggested in another thread that perhaps the intent of the abductors to allow the victims to recall the event, that is that they WANT us to recall such as traumatizing event as some sort of conditioning program, I guess the lesson being that we didn’t listen to all those obliquely worded warnings back in the day so they Greys upped the ante. O.K. but perhaps it’s the hypnosis session itself that is implanting these ideas into the heads of the victims…not necessarily intentionally…and that the abduction event courtesy of the Greys is becoming a meme and that we are now conditioned via the hypnosis to think that is the answer to whatever happened to us whenever we can’t account for some missing time or how that shard of metal got into us. If it is indeed a conditioning program that is being emoloyed on us, then the Grey’s need to step it up a notch as they have a lot more work to do and a lot more people to get to as so far it hasn’t made much of a dent in our conditioning, we're still up to all kinds of shenanigans.

On a recent radio misterioso show which featured Albert Rosales, Albert made an interesting observation. As one who collects stories on humanoid appearances from many varied sources worldwide he mentioned that….and I’m paraphrasing here as I don’t recall his exact wording… he noticed while compiling many of these stories that people who reported contact with greys that occurred decades ago did so while under hypnotic regression at a much later time, closer to today; while any reports of contact that happened at the time and reported at the time involved a fully alert and aware percipient and featured the more colorful beings that we were used to hearing about. Is anybody who reads this and is more versed in this subject than I aware of any regression techniques employed back then and what the details of the cases were ?

My favourite of the abduction tales is the Pascagoula case. Here's the colorful description recalled prior to any hypnotic regression:
"A door opened on the ship, they said, and three creatures emerged and seized the men, floating or levitating them into the craft. Both men reported being paralyzed and numb. Parker claimed that he had fainted due to fright. They described the creatures as being roughly humanoid in shape, and standing about five feet tall. The creatures' skin was pale in color and wrinkled, and they had no eyes that the men could discern, and slits for mouths. Their heads also appeared connected directly to their shoulders, with no discernible neck. There were three "carrot-like" growths instead - one where the nose would be on a human, the other two where ears would normally be. The beings had lobster-like claws at the ends of their arms, and they seemed to have only one leg (Hickson later described the creatures' lower bodies looking as if their legs were fused together) ending in elephant-like feet. Hickson also reported that the creatures moved in mechanical, robotic ways." Wikipedia entry

Re: screen memories

I have a problem with Gene's initial premise regarding the star map as a piece of evidence in the first place. Betty's initial reports of Jimmy Durante like figures with big noses conflicted with Barney's description of the 'creatures.' She later modified her story, as with all these cases, the story is often modified. Given that these are stories of drama and trauma, how can we begin to believe any of these memories, or how the mind may manipulate memory over time and shift and alter the original tale? In other words, the most that can be said about screen memories, and hypnotic regression, is that these are simply memory balls of confusion.

Maybe only the first report, the first recording of witnesses not under the influence of hypnosis, especially not from many years later, can be considered to have any validity at all? That's what makes things like the Kelly Hopkinsville and Pascagoula cases compelling is because they are entirely bizarre, original and do not fit the cultural meme or impregnated pattern that so many abductees report, or are led to. That would be Whitley's dominant contribution to this affair. But even Whitley says that he knows that what he saw was the alien he expected to see based on cultural experience and training. So really, can any of it be trusted at all? Maybe we should be spending more time on the absolutely outrageous, colourful cases as opposed to the established pattern?

Not that I believe that these things are actually happening, but they are very curious stories.

P.S. Csicop's attempted explanation of the Pascagoula case is full of more carp than those two guys caught that night - what a stretch. Don't even bother.
