Rescuing UFO Research
By Gene Steinberg

To the outside world, people who believe in UFOs, or at least take the subject seriously, are usually regarded as members of a cult of crazy people that run around chasing after alien visitors. No, no, the UFO researchers say. We are serious people trying to figure out what’s really happening. Some, however, will add that they want to know why ET is here, and why the government is keeping the truth from us.

As I’ve said in previous columns, the latter approach is putting the cart before the horse. Yes, it is possible UFOs, the ones that remain unidentified after extended and scientific analysis, such as there is, are coming here from other worlds. But the final proof is lacking. That the objects appear to be solid, and capable of feats of maneuverability beyond what terrestrial science can manage, or at least terrestrial science that we know about, doesn’t demonstrate the source of this phenomena. “What else can it be?” is not a scientific argument.

One possible tidbit of evidence mentioned from time to time is the star map that was seen aboard a flying saucer during Barney and Betty Hill’s well-known abduction experience in 1961. Memories of the map were later consulted and found to point to Zeta Reticuli as the possible source of those visitors.

Now Zeta Reticuli is a binary star system (meaning two stars) located about 39 light-years from Earth. So if that’s where the visitors came from, they surely had to make a long journey to come here. Regardless, isn’t this a potential “smoking gun” of the origin of the UFOs?

If they are so advanced as to be capable of interstellar travel, surely they’d be using a navigation system more advanced than a simple map. Besides, has the map has been accurately interpreted from the eyewitness memories? Were the visitors were telling the truth?

Why should they lie to us?

Sorry, folks, but I do not presume to understand the motivations of the source that brings us UFOs, assuming they are physical entities with a purpose. It’s possible, for example, that alien visitors would have some sort of “prime directive” not to disclose their true origin and motives to the local populace. How do I know? The answer is that I don’t, nor does anyone who has studied the phenomenon. Far too many assume that, when they come in contact with supposed alien or “higher” beings who convey a message of one sort or another, that the message is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Is there even a reason to believe that the phenomenon as we see it is the phenomenon’s true appearance? Variations in the shapes and sizes are just presumed to be different models of spacecraft. There are scout ships, and mother ships, and loads of configurations in between. Different types of aliens? Well, perhaps there are visitors from different planets. That explains why they look different, but it seldom occurs to people who take this point of view that there might be a subjective component to what’s being seen.

In other words, we are interpreting something so alien to our experience, that we color the experience to reflect our understanding of the universe. In our sci-fi culture, what else can they be but ET?

I think back to the 1997 sci-fi movie, “Contact,” based on a novel by the late Carl Sagan, in which the protagonist meets up with someone who is a possible alien being. But the being manifests itself (or himself or herself) in the form of her late father so as to be more acceptable to her. That implies an alien whose appearance might seem unduly frightening, or not even visible in the way we regard as visible. How do we know?

Yet another possibility is that the force or forces behind UFOs are putting on a show for us. They manifest themselves as spaceships because we live in a civilization that largely accepts the possibility that aliens exist. We want to visit the stars, there are potentially huge numbers of inhabited planets in the galaxy, so it only makes sense one or more of those civilizations has been visiting us over the centuries.

The long and short of it is that we really do not have final proof of what UFOs are, and studies should continue. Just assuming that the authorities know what it’s all about is a cop-out. Maybe they know something, maybe they don’t, but waiting for answers from a source that may not have any, rather than trying to find them ourselves, won’t get us anywhere in solving this mystery.

But there is one other key issue, and that is that the UFO field is seriously fractured, but that’s true for paranormal research in general. As researcher Jeff Crowell writes in a recent “Parahunter” blog, there is no standardization in this field. There is no authority to certify someone as a UFO and/or paranormal researcher. There is no way to vet would-be researchers to demonstrate that they meet an essential set of standards for education and investigative experience.

In short, anyone can become a UFO researcher with a letterhead, a free blog, or a shingle on their front door. That creates the climate for crackpots to exploit our curiosity about what’s going on for their own benefit. We have, for example, the unfortunate situation where a certain once-respected UFO researcher managed to create a fake persona for himself with a false military and educational background. The deception lasted for several decades before one skeptic actually made a few routine inquiries to ferret out the truth about that person’s deception.

Meantime, I recommend you read Jeff’s commentary for further insights: TheParahunter: Regulation in the Field of the Paranormal - Why It Will Never Happen.. This is something we should all be talking about.
