Catching Up on Stuff

By Gene Steinberg

I’ve said my piece about the Pentagon UAP Task Force report for now, and I don’t expect anything new to happen for a while. Instead, I’ll focus on The Paracast and our latest efforts to, as they say, boost the brand.

The Paracast+: We debuted our premium subscription service in 2o14, offering an enhanced version of the show free of network ads, soon joined by the exclusive After The Paracast podcast.

You sign up from our forums, and a subscription also offers access to special discussion areas. But it’s not the easiest way to do a subscription plan, so we searched for an alternative.

So if you’re a subscriber to Spotify or its Anchor podcast platform — both the paid and free versions — we have taken advantage of their new podcast subscription feature. We all continue to offer the free version of the show on Spotify.

It’s easy to subscribe, but the setup has its limits. For now, it’s only available in the U.S. And you can only subscribe on a monthly basis; there are no annual or lifetime options. I understand that these limits will be changed over time.

And you won’t have access to the Paracast+ areas of our forum; there’s just no practical way to integrate the two systems. So I’ll leave it up to you which method to try. We’d prefer the forum method, since you can subscribe for longer periods, and we thus earn more money up front.

Here are the links:

Subscribe to The Paracast+ via the original method, through our forum (recommended):

Apple is also setting up a podcast subscription scheme, which we expect to join soon. This method will offer both monthly and annual subscriptions, and it will be available in both the U.S. and other countries. But Apple also takes 30% of the revenue for the first year for podcasts, which I’m obviously not too happy about, but will put up with it it brings in more subscriptions. I welcome your thoughts about this. We just want to make it as easy as possible to become a subscriber to The Paracast+.

The Official Paracast Shop: We’ve tried to set up a store with branded goods several times since the show began in 2006. At first, we just placed orders with a T-shirt printer, maintained an inventory and shipped the merchandise to you customers the old fashioned way. But it also meant that we had to invest in stuff we might never sell, and how do we handle customers with unusual sizes?

So we tried a T-shirt print-on-demand service, a company that would print products featuring our logos and manage fulfillment and shipping to our customers. But after a few years, they abandoned the platform, without letting us know. So one day we wanted to check out the store and update the selection, after not receiving orders for a while.

It turned out that the link no longer worked.

Around this time, we were working with a web developer who offered to redesign the site and set up a proper marketing platform to promote the show, boost ad revenue, and fine-tune a branded merchandise resource.

Month after month, I saw works in progress, but nothing was ever completed. There was even a “beta” version of the online store that actually worked for a few months — and then it didn’t.

Evidently the developer had run into some personal difficulties, and he was unable to finish the job. He took the store down without letting us know, and that was that until Randall and I found another resource.

So we set up a new shop using the Nymbl platform. We mention the name in case you encounter it during your travels.

All we can say is that performance was hit or miss. Merchandise shipped late, and we had to ask — and ask — to get our royalties from sales.

They claimed to have found a new “partner” to fix ordering and payment problems, but we weren’t having it.

So we’ve settled on the CafePress platform. The company has been around for years, and has perfected a reliable print-on-demand and ordering system. There are dozens off selections that include T-shirts, jackets, throw pillows, caps, mugs and other goods.

Among his skills, Randall knows web development, and he was able to tame the CafePress system to provide a relatively simple way to present exclusive Paracast branded merchandise that you can order within just a couple of minutes. They ship around the world, and it’s easy for you to track your order.

And it’s not just the various Paracast logos (we offer three), but we’ve added other artwork from which to select the products you want. We are even making it possible to offer artwork from other artists. Randall has added some of his own artwork, and the selection will grow over time.

So The Paracast Shop will feature original designs created by our very own listeners! When you buy one of their designs, you not only help support the show, you're helping the artist who made the design gain some recognition.

The Paracast Shop is a work in progress, and it will grow over time. So come pay a visit and tell us what you think:

Over time, we plan to open shops on other platforms. We are already experimenting with different setups and we’ll let you know when one is ready to roll.

With your support, The Paracast, now in its 16th year, is here to stay.

And if you just want to send a few bucks our way, we always appreciate your donation.

Easiest way is to use PayPal, which also lets you send a donation via a major credit card:

And thanks, as always, for your support over the years. It’s been a wild ride and then some.
