Welcome to the Crazy World of UFO Dirty Tricks
By Gene Steinberg

There’s a meme being played out in the UFO field over the years that government disinformation agents have been scurrying about the landscape playing evil pranks against innocent citizens who just happened to see the wrong things in the sky. Or they are demanding that the eyewitnesses not talk about what they saw, sometimes citing national security concerns as the reason.

During the early 1980s, or perhaps late 1970s, a curious collection of scientists, military people and intelligence agents, reportedly came together to form a group known as “The Aviary.” Their connection to each other was an interest in UFOs and possible government experiments with remote viewing, telepathy, and other alleged psychic powers.

They were also given code-names that corresponded to birds, such as Falcon, Condor, Owl, and even Penguin. Who was who may not be important in the scheme of things, except for the possibility that at least two well-known researchers, such as Dr. Bruce Maccabee and Jacques Vallee, may have been members of this group. Or maybe not.

The Aviary largely came to public attention when UFO researcher William Moore, one of the original investigators into the Roswell, NM episode, and co-author of ‘The Roswell Incident” with Charles Berlitz and Stanton Friedman (who went mostly uncredited) in 1980, confessed to being a government disinformation agent. He evidently worked at the behest of members of The Aviary, and, as you might expect, he was more or less shunned by the UFO field after making that admission at a MUFON conference in Las Vegas in 1989.

Now the possibility of secret or overt government involvement is romantic in a sense, as such behavior would appear to validate the belief that the authorities are taking the UFO mystery seriously. Or maybe they are actually looking for possible spies or terrorists among the ranks of people interested in the subject. It’s not as if any of this is particularly clear.

Possible proof of government concern may be found in the pages of “They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers,” by Gray Barker, which first revealed the alleged existence of the Men In Black. UFO author John Keel went a long way towards expanding on the MIB legend. Indeed, he claimed over the years to be the victim of evil pranks by possible MIB types, including weird phone calls, and the possibility that people actually impersonated him and other figures in UFO research from time to time.

All so curious.

Now I do not know whether or not everything Keel wrote in his books is necessarily true. Some of his critics suggest that, although he came upon some compelling cases, his respect for scholarship may have been lacking. As far Barker, he was notorious for embellishing facts with fictional overtones.

Over the years, I’ve actually come across some people who claim to have been the victim of supposed MIB visits. Of course, nothing stops rogue military people from going out on their own and pretending to represent some secret military agency. Perhaps civilians hoping to generate some controversy are also somehow involved.

Sometimes the situation gets a little too close to home.

I recall, for example, attending a lecture by Whitley Strieber, where he recounted his various abduction experiences. It all took place during a series of UFO-related meetings sponsored by long-time researcher and publisher Tim Beckley in New York City. It was in the late 1980s, and Strieber delivered an anecdote about possible government interference in his personal life. One example he mentioned was a particularly invasive tax audit.

Now I more or less forgot Strieber’s statement until I happened to get an IRS letter announcing an audit not too many weeks after that lecture. It was all a curious situation because the accountant I hired to represent me basically messed up the meetings with the IRS auditors and thus only made it take longer to resolve the situation. I did not think of this episode as a possible government effort to intimidate me. It was just one of those things.

I could say the same for some particularly irritating incidents over the last three years, where my family bank accounts were hacked on four separate occasions. If it has ever happened to you, you realize how helpless you feel. Suddenly your bank balance is zeroed (or even goes negative if you have “overdraft protection”). Depending on how the account is hacked, it can take days or weeks for the intrusion to be resolved. Two of those episodes occurred just this month, in fact, and are still under investigation.

Now I will not presume to suggest that I have been targeted by anyone or any agency. Episodes of identity theft are more and more common these days. Criminals can get ahold of your personal information, including credit card and checking account numbers, without actually gaining access to your computers or an Internet account. Sometimes the mere act of handing a check or credit card to a cashier at a local store or restaurant can result in an unscrupulous party taking down the information under the pretense of verifying your accounts.

When you become a victim of these crimes, and you are interested in the paranormal, I can see where you might feel inclined to consider a possible connection. But lots of people are victimized who may have no interest whatever in the strange and unknown. Stuff happens.

In any case, on this week’s episode of The Paracast, we are presenting Greg Bishop, host of the “Radio Misterioso” radio show, and author of several UFO books, to provide his insights into the history of The Aviary and its possible impact on UFO research. Should we take government intervention and harassment against people active in the field seriously? Or is that, too, just one of those things?
