A Special Welcome to Our New Listeners

Now that we’re syndicated on the GCN network, traditional (or terrestrial) radio stations in the U.S. are beginning to carry The Paracast. What this means is that many of you haven’t are listening to the show and reading this newsletter for the first time, while those of you who have been long-time listeners have noticed a few changes.

So I want to reintroduce the show and explain why things are a little different.

The Paracast is not just another paranormal radio show. We feature top researchers in the field, along with eyewitnesses, and we have a team of four co-hosts who are each experts in their own way. They aren’t just professional journalists or broadcasters.

Just as important, we don’t just accept every claim that comes our way. Although millions of people have had weird experiences they cannot explain, there are, unfortunately, far too many people who prefer to just tell tall tales. They hope to impress their friends or maybe get their 15 minutes of fame.

If you look over the reviews of our show over at Apple’s iTunes, you’ll see they are all over the place. Some praise our no-nonsense approach, while others equate us with debunkers, the misguided people who will dismiss any extraordinary claim, regardless of the supporting evidence.

At the same time, we are willing to let people have their say. That means you’ll hear lots of contrary views on The Paracast. Sometimes we’ll question those views, sometimes we’ll just ask a few leading questions, sit back and enjoy the conversation. But if we get wind someone is being deceptive, we won’t let them get away with it!

So, fundamentally, our approach hasn’t changed. At the same time, being on ad-supported commercial radio means we’ve had to make a few alterations in the way the show is presented.

You see, advertising on a network radio show is comes from three different sources. First, we have our own sponsors, companies with whom we hope you’ll do business if they offer a product or service that interests you. They provide the income that pays our bills.

There are also network sponsorships, which cover the network costs, and, of course, local ads from the stations that carry the show, so they can make a living. Obviously, we cannot pick and choose what those spots are. If you don’t care about the product, nobody forces you to listen. If you download the Podcast version of The Paracast, feel free to press the Fast Forward button to skip direct to the show content. That’s what I do with the DVR connected to the family TV.

Some of you have asked whether we’d do better to offer a premium show, charging each of you to download a copy. I suppose the theory sounds good, except that, in these perilous economic times, most of you can’t afford an extra weekly or monthly expense. We wouldn’t be playing fair with the 95% of you who won’t be able to hear the show, who were promised that The Paracast would remain free, now and always, and that’s a promise we plan to keep.

At the same time, being on a national network means we can go after some of the guests for whom an online radio show isn’t terribly inviting. It doesn’t matter that online radio guarantees loyalty, because listeners aren’t just tuning into a station, but physically downloading a file to listen to it.

This also means that The Paracast will still be available to you listeners from around the world as before, online, direct from our site, iTunes or loads of other Podcast collections. You can still download and subscribe to your favorite episode.

I also have loads of ideas about the future direction of The Paracast, prospects for guests and lots more. What I can say now is stay tuned -- the best is yet to come.
