The UFO Case That Will Never Die
By Gene Steinberg

Ask anyone about UFOs, and there’s a fairly good chance they will mention Roswell, New Mexico. The alleged crash of a space ship in 1947 has fueled discussions, debates, books and even science fiction movies for decades since the “rediscovery” of the case in the late 1970s.

It all began with a simple press release on July 8, 1947, from the Roswell Army Air Field, which claimed that a crashed “flying disk” had been recovered at a nearby ranch. Within hours, the claim was shot down with yet another press release stating it was nothing more than a radar-tracking balloon.

The Roswell event, whatever it was, occurred some years before there was an active UFO research community, and thus was quickly forgotten; that is, until UFO investigator Stanton Friedman interviewed one Major Jesse Marcel, who was involved in the original discovery of the debris of that crashed whatever-it-was. In that interview, which took place in 1978, Marcel said he believed it was a spaceship, and thus began a legend.

Over the years, anyone and everyone who might have been present in and around Roswell in 1947 was contacted by one UFO investigator or another to see just what they remembered of that long-ago event.

The stories have become quite complicated and contradictory. Some suggest that, not only did a space ship crash, but living or dead beings were also recovered. The wreckage and possibly the passengers were supposedly taken to a secret military base that may be located beneath the Area 51 installation in Nevada, Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, or somewhere else entirely.

The “official” explanation from the Air Force has it that answer number two, a balloon, applies to the Roswell case. No doubt they blame faulty memories over periods of many decades for the belief that the Roswell crash actually involved a spaceship.

Now, I long believed that most of you were probably getting bored after hearing the same stories told over and over again year after year. The witnesses being interviewed these days are of the second or third generation, and thus they have little or no direct connection to the original event. If the U.S. authorities did recover actual wreckage of such a craft, the secret has been well kept. No confirmed whistleblowers have been found.

Yes, there some alleged secret documents, describing a small committee known as MJ-12, which supposedly kept tabs on the ongoing investigation of the Roswell crash and other UFO-related events. However, the authenticity of those documents has been hotly disputed over the years. At best, some of the documents might be real, while others are fake. Did it all represent a clumsy attempt at disinformation?

That, I thought, was that, until I learned recently of a new effort to reexamine Roswell as a “cold case,” to see if a smoking gun can ever be found. This small group, dubbed the “Dream Team,” consists of several UFO researchers with long-time interests in the case, such as Kevin D. Randle, Tom Carey and Don Schmitt. The remaining members include Tony Bragalia, Chris Rutkowski (a guest on this week’s episode of The Paracast), and Dr. David Rudiak.

Now I’m not about to suggest that this “gang of six” will fare any better than previous efforts to bring the Roswell case to a conclusion. There always seems to be yet one more tidbit of evidence to examine, and one more piece of testimony to consider. At the same time, lacking a final solution, you have to wonder whether these people will decide to just give up and move on to something else.

To me, the Dream Team has to be the last hurrah for efforts to find whether there’s any meat and potatoes in the Roswell case. I continue to wonder, though: If the U.S. military really took charge of proof positive that we are being visited by ET, why is it that not a single piece of provable data has come forth over all these years to demonstrate that such a thing really happened?

No, I’m not talking about someone’s memories, of that controversial book, “The Day After Roswell,” from Colonel Philip J. Corso, and William Birnes, in which it was alleged that material from the Roswell crash was funneled into private industry to fuel development of night goggles and solid state chips. I mean ironclad physical evidence, photos, wreckage, something that would demonstrate once and for all that the Roswell case really involved the crash of a UFO, and not a balloon or some other “conventional” event.

I can’t say I feel any more optimistic that the Dream Team will fare any better than previous efforts to get to the bottom of the Roswell case. But it’s clear that this is one story that just won’t go away.
