Why is UFO Research Stuck in the 1950s?
By Gene Steinberg

In so many of my columns, I have compared today’s UFO studies to the 1950s, when the subject first became popular. Even though it was saddled with the dreaded “flying saucers” moniker in those days -- and that hasn’t changed for some of us old-timers -- it’s not as if the prevailing points of view have undergone much change since then.

So in the 1950s, the conventional wisdom had it that UFOs were actually visitors from another planet. In those days, we were still talking about Mars, or maybe a hidden base on the back side of the Moon. The Mars chatter about canals and such is mostly history, since we’ve sent probes there and learned the truth about that barren world.

All right, maybe advanced life existed there millions of years ago, before the atmosphere thinned. But it’s not anything like the “Barsoom” envisioned by author Edgar Rice Burroughs for his “John Carter” novels, on which the new Disney sci-fi film is based. But what if those alleged Martians abandoned their home world when conditions worsened and migrated to Earth? Or elsewhere?

Basically UFO researchers have mostly transported the possible origin of UFOs to another star system, though some speak in vague terms of another dimension. Perhaps this follows the “Star Trek” image of a “warp drive,” a plot gimmick to make travel across many light years a fairly routine process It’s also possible, I suppose, for an advanced civilization to create a city in space, a huge vessel or mother ship that is designed for voyages that may take many decades to complete. Perhaps the beings who reach the ship’s final destination are descendants of the original travelers, or maybe they are placed in some form of stasis or suspended animation to survive a long journey.

But extrapolating upon the means of travel doesn’t really alter the core theory of ET visitation.

It also followed that the major governments of the world possibly know a fair amount of what’s going on, only they have hidden the information from the population to prevent panic, and certainly to retain control. It may also be that large multinational corporations, particularly in the energy business, would suffer greatly from the revelation that others had invented highly sophisticated propulsion systems that would render their technologies obsolete. I haven’t even considered the impact to organized religion.

Then, as now, some continue to demand an admission or disclosure of the truth about UFOs by Earth’s governments. In the old days, pioneer UFO writer Major Donald E. Keyhoe felt that the U.S. Congress could deal with the secrecy, demanding that the military tell us what they know about our visitors. But U.S. House hearings in the 1960s merely produced The Condon Report, a clear whitewash on the significance of the mystery. Even the release of UFO-related documents by some governments around the world in recent years has failed to provide any illumination, since the cases are either well known, or details are heavily redacted in the interests of national security, so critical evidence may still be hidden.

Over the years, tens of thousands of UFO sightings have been collected by organizations and individuals around the world. There are photos, movies, soil samples and detailed eyewitness testimony. Surely there’s enough information out there to feed the data into computers and attempt to find patterns, consistencies, to get a better picture of what possibly real UFOs are all about. And I haven't begun to consider the possible relationship between UFOs and other paranormal phenomena.

Unfortunately, far too much attention is focused on the past. Certainly the Roswell case gets lots of attention still, which is why we feature occasional discussions about the case on The Paracast. Maybe that “Dream Team,” involving several investigators, will be able to take this cold case and find out whether there’s any new compelling evidence to chew over. Or maybe we can at last set it aside and sift through that huge repository of data to try to find some real answers in other cases.

I don’t know about you, but routine UFO sightings bore me stiff. We all see lights in the skies from time to time, but few of them appear to be of unknown origin. But there are superbly detailed sightings, with loads of eyewitness testimony and accompanying evidence, which cry out for further investigation.

And if the most significant evidence is given an extensive computerized analysis, maybe we’ll find clues to missing details, things we should have asked the witnesses but failed to do so, or existing evidence that was somehow overlooked.

At the end of the day, though, we cannot live in the 1950s and repeat the same old mistakes. We cannot forget the sad history of UFO research and the decades wasted learning little new about the phenomenon.

It’s time to move ahead. Maybe, this time, more than a few random scientists will get involved to move the study forward. Maybe some of those wealthy individuals with loads of free cash on hand can be persuaded to invest in UFO research.

In the end, UFOs may indeed represent visitations by ET. But it’s a mistake to assume facts before there’s final proof, just as it’s a mistake to assume that governments know the secret and we can depend on them to tell it to us if we apply enough pressure.

Back at the dawn of the Modern Era in ufology we were also entering a revolution in communications and air transportation more marvelous than anything else to date. The vast majority of inventions we have today are extensions of what came out of the 1950s and 1960s. We haven't seen much that is really new since, only updated, faster, smaller, and improved versions. The point of this being that against the backdrop of our own emerging technology and scientific advancement, the UFO phenomenon was being looked at in a whole new light that also made it even more exciting. But as time has worn on, we've become desensitized to our technology based way of life, and at the same time desensitized to the UFO phenomenon. For the veterans it can be hard to retain the perspective that UFOs are just as amazing a thing now as they were back then, but the truth is that they are even more profound, especially to those who have not become desensitized and we must resist the temptation to look for answers we think are more exciting or entertaining simply because we're tired of hearing old stories or contemplating the ETH.

The classic cases are more important now than ever because they happened at a time when it was far easier to separate the "signal from the noise", and those of us fortunate to have lived through a good portion of it need to keep that spark alive because it gives us bearings on how to proceed into the future. Without it, contemporary ufology would be lost amid countless online videos, TV shows, talk shows, photos, tabloid stories and blogs and we'd have no idea what is real or fake. In contrast, the classics keep the field grounded and I'm constantly reminded of how amazing some of the classic stories are. If anything we need to find a way to present them to the next generation in a way that they can relate to. The veterans had books and an imagination. Perhaps what we need to do now is put it all into some kind of 3D HD rendering that gives them a sense of what it would be like to go into a screaming dive in a sabre jet from 20,000 feet, just nudging the sound barrier in pursuit of a UFO and then firing on it with 50 caliber machine guns ... as part of history, not just some fictional video game.
