The Paracast seeks to shed light on the mysteries and complexities of our Universe and the secrets that surround us in our everyday lives.

Join long-time paranormal researcher Gene Steinberg, co-host and acclaimed field investigator Christopher O'Brien, and a panel of special guest experts and experiencers, as they explore the realms of the known and unknown. Listen each week to the great stories of the history of the paranormal field in the 20th and 21st centuries.

This Week's Episode: Gene and Chris present Derrel Sims, who is also known as "The Alien Hunter." His official background calls Sims "the world's leading expert on alien abductions. His 38+ years of field research has focused on physical evidence, and led to his groundbreaking discoveries of alien implants and alien fluorescence. As a former military police officer and CIA operative, Sims has a unique insight to the alien organization which he believes functions similarly to an intelligence agency." We'll be asking him the hard questions about his background, abduction experiences, and his UFO research.

The Death Throes of Ufology Revisited
By Gene Steinberg

Every few years, people suggest that the UFO field is toast — gone, kaput. Whether it’s a perceived lull in sightings, the folding of a UFO-related publication, or some sort of scandal involving a public figure in the field, you wonder whether it’s time to just give it all up and get a life for a change.

One of the more interesting commentaries about doom and gloom actually dates back to 1970, when the late Jim Moseley ruminated on the sad state of the UFO field in an article published in my old magazine, “Caveat Emptor,” under the pseudonym, “Lt. Philip Cestling, USAR.”

Now Jim quickly copped to the secret identity, but since he made himself one of the characters in this article, I suppose he felt more comfortable pretending to be a third party, though surely not a disinterested one.

In describing his trips to several flying saucer conventions around the country over the previous years, and some of the silly sidelights, Moseley remarked that “…the science of Ufology, if there ever was such a thing, seems about to breathe its last. Whatever the saucers and their alleged occupants are, they appear to have abandoned us. It wasn’t too long ago that UFOs moved legislators, generals, scientists, and even Congressional committees. Of late, most of these notables — whose attention was attracted only briefly to the phenomenon — have returned to more meaningful pursuits. The Field has been left in the not-too-competent hands if crackpots, money-grubbers, and teenage study groups.”

Some 44 years later, you wonder if anything has changed, although you don’t see much action from teenagers in the field nowadays.

But it was never true that the UFOs somehow “abandoned us.” There were plenty of sightings in 1970, as there were in 2013 for that matter. It’s still too early in the year to see how things will fare in 2014. However, some things have happened that will no doubt make some of you wonder why anyone should bother.

Yes, there are still active UFO research organizations, including MUFON. But it’s not as if there have been any new revelations as to what’s really going on. So-called “smoking gun” evidence remains a promise, not a reality. Sure, some people claim to possess compelling evidence that would demonstrate we are being visited by an advanced civilization, perhaps from another world, and that aliens are in our midst. But we never actually see the iron-clad test results, such as DNA tests, which demonstrate the presence of a living creature that’s not of this world. Yes, living, not something fossilized in an ancient meteorite.

At the same time, some figures in the field manage to find themselves in a heap of trouble.

The most recent example is the notorious Stan Romanek, someone who claims to be in touch with ET. But his evidence has been nothing if not laughable. Take that photo of an alleged alien staring through a window. That was more than enough to make most serious researchers give up on him.

But it only gets worse. Very recently Romanek was arrested and charged with suspicion of distributing alleged child pornography. A newspaper story on the incident claimed that the arrest came as the result of a “months-long investigation into tips provided by the Department of Homeland Security.”

To be sure, the charges are serious enough. But you have to wonder how the DHS became involved, since child pornography, however offensive, isn’t a case of domestic terrorism. Regardless, Romanek is still innocent until proven guilty. His wife is already claiming it’s all a part of some sort of nefarious harassment scheme that is designed to discredit his work. But to most serious UFO researchers, Romanek has already been discredited. So why bother?

Unfortunately, episodes such as this, or any legal difficulties faced by someone involved in the UFO field, only serve to discredit the activities of the many dedicated people who are only trying to find out what’s really going on.

There’s also the case of UFO Magazine, which has been barely active over the past year or two. Publication of the print version became more and more infrequent and, after a long interval, it was announced it was going all-digital. But only one issue appeared under the new format.

And now, according to a post from Bill Birnes, the outgoing publisher, “The owner of UFO Magazine, Inc. has officially noticed us that he is putting UFO Magazine, Inc. up for sale. We do not know if there is currently a buyer, or who the buyer is, or when the sale will be effectuated.

“However, in anticipation of that proposed sale, the owner UFO Magazine, Inc. has directed us to terminate all publication of UFO Magazine including, but not limited to, the fulfillment of any subscriptions…”

This brief statement is nothing if not confusing. As with many of you, I presumed Bill and Nancy Birnes were the owners of UFO Magazine. But evidently a third party holds the purse strings, and that party, still unidentified, wants someone else to take it over.

And, yes, I’ve asked who actually owns the magazine. The publisher is only identified as UFO Magazine, Inc., but I was informed that the contracts require confidentiality.

I wouldn’t ask anyone to break a contractual arrangement, but I wonder why a publication that has long advocated full disclosure of UFO information is, itself, owned by a corporation whose owners are not being revealed.

Regardless, I don’t think that there are many people out there who’d want to invest in a failing UFO magazine. The obligations to existing subscribers would, itself, work against making the venture financially secure. Having been in the UFO magazine game myself, it’s not something I’d recommend to anyone, unless they have the spare cash and are willing to sustain ongoing losses.

But I am not yet prepared to echo the words of my dear friend, Jim Moseley, all those years ago. I still think the UFO has plenty of life left, and these two events should not serve as reasons for people to give up on the subject. Besides, Moseley stayed active in the field until the end of his life. And, yes, there is still a worldwide mystery that cries out for a solution.

Re: "But you have to wonder how the DHS became involved, since child pornography, however offensive, isn’t a case of domestic terrorism." -- One of the constituent agencies within DHS is US Customs & Border Protection. Intercepting child pornography bound to/from a subject would of course be one of the things that could account for DHS initiating contact with local law enforcement for investigation.

So after reading that New York's attorney general is looking into Bitcoin payment processors, I've removed the links for now. If Bitcoin is cleared and fully active again, we'll take donations. But for now, I have enough problems to deal with already.

I wonder if anyone these days publishes a profitable magazine. Surely they do. I would imagine that market still wants high-quality coffee table type mags like Architectural Digest. I just can't believe someone hasn't figured out a way to make a paranormal-type magazine profitable.

So after reading that New York's attorney general is looking into Bitcoin payment processors...

I never understood why someone would allow some sketchy website hold their money. The idea struck me as blatantly silly the first time I saw it.

The largest benefit of Bitcoin is the fact that it is specifically designed to avoid frauds like those.

I also feel bad for them, but it's dangerous for a person to employ a technology they don't understand.

Caveat Emptor

I've held many people in my arms while they bled to death waiting for a medi-vac helicopter because they bit off more motorcycle than they could chew. They tried to use that technology too deeply without first learning it well.

Seriously? How exactly did you find yourself in the position of holding "many people"? How many are you talking about?

Five people. That may not sound like very many people to you, but it seems like a lot to me because they just pop into my head at weird, random times like when standing in line at the grocery store or sitting at a wedding.

For many years I was into motorcycling. I organized and led group rides, attended big biker rallies, and did long-distance touring.

When a 20 year-old kid buys a Hayabusa and pulls wheelies on the seawall in Galveston with safety gear consisting of sunglasses and flip-flops, bad things happen. When a 60 year-old on blood pressure medication buys a 700 pound hog and rides 70 mph in parade formation on twisty two-lane roads with no helmet and three months experience, bad things happen.

Bitcoin is the same way. I worked in lumber mills as a kid. When someone disabled or circumvented every safety mechanism built into a piece of equipment and then cut their fingers off, people had sympathy for their loss, but not much.

Totally agree. As of Dec 2013, the FBI was one of the largest BICOIN holders by virtue of multiple take-downs of large trans-national money laundering enterprises using Bitcoin to circumvent the global banking system. Back in January prosecutors handling the FBI cases announced their intent to have US Marshals auction off much of their bitcoin holdings that had been declared forfeited by a federal judge (per "The Feds Are Ready To Sell $25 Million of Bitcoin Seized From The Silk Road" Jan 14 2014, FORBES, accessed at The Feds Are Ready To Sell $25 Million of Bitcoin Seized From The Silk Road - Forbes In order to sell theses holdings in such a manner, they would have to possess the passwords for the wallet. Have not seen any update on this auction but the news for the Bitcoin community has been all bad lately, especially with the bankruptcy of a major exchange, Mt. Gox, this week, which stated yesterday that "850,000 bitcoins, worth several hundred million dollars, are unaccounted for" as a result of theft.

It looks like the FBI did transfer the coins to their own address.

If they are smart, they will transfer them to the Federal Reserve for use in price manipulation. If they are dumb, they will auction them off in lots to the venture capital firms now licking their chops over them.

The big banks (buggy whip makers) are already dead. They are just now starting to realize that fact, and pressuring government to save them. They will die fighting. It will be ugly. But the outcome has already been determined.
