Listen each week to the great stories of the history of the paranormal field in the 20th and 21st centuries.

This Week's Episode: Gene and Chris present the return of independent researcher Thomas P. Fusco. Fusco has devoted some three decades investigating the relationship between mind, physics, spirituality, parapsychology, scientific anomalies and paranormal phenomena with the goal of uncovering the unifying cosmological framework that has eluded mankind for generations. On this episode, he'll be expanding on his theory of supergeometry as detailed in his book, "Behind the Cosmic Veil: A New Vision of Reality," which integrates reality, spiritual, and the supernatural, including UFOs and other strange events.

Is There a Breakaway Civilization?
By Gene Steinberg

One of the common conspiracy theories tells of one or more secret governments that are really in control of human affairs. That theory implies a covert organization that is the true power in one or more countries, while the elected or self-proclaimed leaders are, in reality, mere figureheads who present the public face, good or otherwise. But those figureheads are merely puppets who must obey orders to keep their positions.

Some will refer to the money or oil interests as being in control. They hold the purse strings, so they can fund the campaigns of the right politicians, or provide behind-the-scenes support, and get the people in office they prefer. Yes, we know that it takes a billion dollars and then some to elect the President of the U.S., but does that really put someone in office who has anything but a modicum of control over what goes on?

There are all sorts of conspiracies that revolve around those who might direct world affairs. One theory has it that they restrict scientific advancement that would hurt the money tree. So, for example, those claims of gadgets that can boost a car’s fuel economy to 200 miles per gallon. Sure we can buy cars that get up to 40 miles per gallon on the highway (mine maxes out at 35 last I checked), but what about 100 miles per gallon? Well, there are those electric cars, of course, but they have their issues.

In our corner of the world, such speculation might focus on who controls the secret of the UFOs. Does the secret government know the truth. Do they have direct interactions with alien beings? What about the allegations of a secret space program that has replaced the public space program in sending humans to other worlds? Have we already colonized the moon?

Now one of the early breakaway civilization concepts spoke of Nazis fleeing Germany at the end of World War II and migrating to South America. They allegedly brought with them knowledge of incredible scientific achievements that far exceeded what we could accomplish in the late 1940s or 1950s. But we don’t hear much of that talk these days.

Yet another concept speaks of a race of cryptoterrestrials who live within caves or under the sea — or perhaps both. They are highly advanced, extremely intelligent, and want to have nothing to do with the race of beings who took dominion over our world. We see them from time to time flying around in advanced aircraft capable of amazing speeds and pinpoint turns without breaking apart.

But you wonder why such a civilization would stay out of the way in the first place and not exert control. Or are they even native to our planet? What if a race of aliens fled from their home world centuries ago because of some sort of calamity? It doesn’t matter what happened, but they sought refuge on another world with atmospheric and surface conditions that would sustain their species.

They chose Earth.

But since there were already beings here who were in charge, and the aliens had peaceful intent, they opted not to interfere. So they sought refuge in out of the way places, deciding not to communicate with us except on rare occasions, and only then under extreme secrecy. But the authorities know who they are, and their intent, and have agreed to keep the secret. Why? Well, maybe they were promised bits and pieces of advanced technology in exchange for their cooperation.

If such a civilization exists, are they human or humanoid? Certainly if they can exist comfortably on Earth, you might expect them to be reasonably similar to us with only modest physical differences. Maybe some are so close to humans that they could be walking among us. Of course, that very thought would stir paranoia, that some of the people we see strolling through the shopping mall or waiting at the subway stop were not from Earth.

Of course, one theory is as good as another, particularly if there’s no evidence of where the UFOs really come from. Sure, there are reports of people communicating with other beings in some fashion, and relating what they were told. But there’s no reason to believe that the information conveyed by these other beings is in any way accurate. Regardless of where they come from, they might have a prime directive or other code of ethical behavior that dictates what they can tell the denizens of another planet, particularly one they regard as primitive and potentially hostile.

Some suggest the pilots of UFOs will not interfere with humans. But if that’s true, why do they allow their craft to be seen? Bear in mind that some people have had their lives totally changed as the result of a UFO sighting, and that’s before you factor in any possibility of alien contact, and forget about abductions.

But the most insidious theory has it that the denizens of this hidden civilization, wherever they come from, intend to take over some day. Meantime, they abduct humans to get information about the genetic pool, or perhaps create groups of Manchurian candidates who, upon receiving the appropriate trigger, will perform their programmed task, whatever that is.

A lot of what I’m writing about so far is largely the stuff of sci-fi movies and books. You can imagine all sorts of scenarios to explain the presence of UFOs and other strange things in fact and in fiction. The possibilities for speculation are endless, and you can probably find bits of evidence that point in all sorts of directions.

At the end of the day, however, are there alien beings living on Earth who are watching over us for reasons only known to themselves? Do they hide to protect themselves from warlike humans, or simply because they just don’t want to get involved? Do they really have skilled scientists who have mastered advanced technologies, or are they making do with aircraft left to them by their ancestors, long, long ago? If that were the case, maybe their struggles to survive in a hostile environment resulted in losing the ability to reproduce their advanced machines and other technologies, and so they cope. Or perhaps those who most resemble the locals ultimately decide to live among them, starting relationships and raising families.

Almost sounds like the ending of an acclaimed TV show, the remade “Battlestar Galactica.” But is there any reality to any of it? That remains to be seen.

... Of course, one theory is as good as another, particularly if there’s no evidence of where the UFOs really come from ...

If one theory is as good as another, there would be no need to "separate the signal from the noise". IMO the only sameness any theory is entitled to, is to be judged by the same standards of evidence and critical thinking as the rest. ( What was I thinking with that comment about the chili anyway? I actually woke up at 5:00am going OMG how many people read that and took it all totally the wrong way  . )

I know you are an ET sorta person, and we are seeing more and more proof of planets that may have spawned alien civilizations. But we still are quite short of smoking guns here.

I have no doubt in my mind alien craft are real and have crossed paths with humans. So that being the case, there are a few possibilities, and there are also good reasons to assign those possibilities a hierarchy of probability rather than considering them all equal. So I'm simply in a position where I have yet to see reasoning sufficient enough to dislodge the ETH from it's place as the top theory. I know you and Chris have had some sort of epiphany that the ETH isn't the answer, but that's far too vague for me to know how to grant it weight. If you guys could help there, then maybe we'd make some progress along those lines. I just don't see the rationale yet. Still, I'll concede that it may be the case that ETH isn't correct, and I admit that we still have a lot to learn.

No epiphany. Just looking at a wider picture.
What I meant by epiphany isn't meant to be a slight. It's that your past descriptions describe a sudden intuitive leap of understanding based on cumulative familiarity and experience rather than a chain of point-by-point logic, and on a certain level I think that is valuable and insightful. Specifically, if we take in all the peripheral phenomena that enter into ufology studies, it's not reasonable to claim that it all points to the ETH. Even when we take into consideration interstellar, natural, and manmade as explanations, there still seems to be certain residual oddities. Are they just noise or do they point to an even deeper mystery? Maybe. Maybe not. But either way, the remaining possibilities add a lot more "extraordinariness" to this already extraordinary topic. That doesn't mean it's not possible though ;) .
