Are There No Solutions?
By Gene Steinberg
I suppose that some might believe that the solutions to a host of paranormal mysteries, particularly UFOs, are just around the corner. If you believe a few purveyors of presumed paranormal wisdom — and don’t forget the latest deal for a book or a DVD or a recent lecture — the answers are close at end.
But that’s what they always say.
Now around the fall of 1993 or thereabouts, one of these paranormal hustlers assured one and all that the truth about UFOs would be revealed within 90 days. Well, he’s 22 years late. But it wasn’t the first time someone made predictions about when the answers would be at hand. It just never seems to happen.
Back in the 1950s, Major Donald Keyhoe wanted you to know that all it took was a set of hearings in the U.S. Congress to reveal the truth to the public. Once those honorable politicians knew the facts, they would do the right thing and demand that the Air Force and other agencies involved in the UFO cover-up open the floodgates and let the facts come forth.
Actual hearings were held in 1968, and there were presentations in favor of UFO reality. As I was reminded in a recent Facebook post, a key proponent of the hearings, Congressman J. Edward Rousch, a Democrat, was reportedly in favor of the extraterrestrial theory. Indeed, after he was defeated in the next election, he ended up joining the board of governors for Major Keyhoe’s organization, NICAP.
But all those hearings gave us was the Condon Report, considered a whitewash, and an excuse for the Air Force to kill Project Blue Book.
What’s more, legislators who favor UFO reality have not been confined to the Democratic party. Conservative Republican Senator Barry Goldwater, trounced in his bid for President by Lyndon Johnson in 1964, was a vocal advocate in favor of persuading the government to reveal what it knew about the subject. But if they had any guilty knowledge at all that would shed light on the situation, they evidently never let him in on the secret.
Now unlike the way things are handled these days, Senator Goldwater was not above striking friendships with people on the other side of the political spectrum, such as Senator George McGovern, and I once saw them on a TV talk show expressing their points of view in a very congenial fashion. Such things would be unheard of nowadays.
Regardless, the occasional demands of prominent people for some sort of UFO disclosure haven’t really gone anywhere. If there’s a secret to be revealed, it’s been kept close to the vest. The Air Force continues to assert that UFOs do not present a threat to our national security and/or there is no evidence that we are being visited by ET.
Can anything be done to change this situation?
Well, there’s a movement now to persuade 100,000 people to sign a petition demanding UFO disclosure. A previous petition reached 12,000 names, and even got a response from a low-level government bureaucrat repeating the usual U.S. government mantra.
But even 100,000 is small potatoes in the scheme of things. Over a million people have signed an online petition opposing a trade agreement between the United States and the European Union. The treaty is known as the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or TTIP. I’ll leave it to the gentle reader to evaluate the success of other petitions and whether they succeeded in their intent.
Now if the 100,000 threshold is reached, there’s no evidence to indicate that it will be anything more than a curiosity on the TV cable news shows. To believe it would somehow force the U.S. government to change its tune is clearly naive. If elections involving millions of people don’t change the behavior of a government agency, it’s hard to believe that one relatively small poll would make any difference.
The problem with all this is one of doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results. While I have no problem with learning if the governments of the world know more about UFOs than they’re revealing — absent considerations of a nation’s security — I don’t think that demanding disclosure is going to help. We don’t even know what there is to disclose, or what would happen if someone with a security clearance was allowed to examine everything and report the results, minus secured names, dates and locations. At the end of the day, the expected proof that we are being visited by extraterrestrial entities of one sort or another may not even exist.
That doesn’t mean that UFOs aren’t extraterrestrial. For physical evidence to exist, however, it would require that a crash such as Roswell be the real article, one that yielded both hardware and perhaps alien corpses. That may be true, but it requires assumptions. Or it would require trace evidence of clearly extraterrestrial origin, a sighting of a mysterious aircraft of unknown origin in space, or some overt effort on their part to communicate with us.
Yes, there have been reports of UFOs in space, but no clear evidence they were what some believe them to be, which is physical spaceships from out there.
And even if there was evidence of otherworldly visitors in our midst, that doesn’t mean we know where they come from, how many different species are visiting us, and, most important, their motives. Indeed, the lack of information about motivation may be a key reason why disclosure hasn’t occurred.
Consider, also, how the subject would be treated if we had evidence of alien visitation but knew nothing more. We couldn’t say if they were hostile or friendly or indifferent. That lack of knowledge may be a key reason to assert national security concerns. But perhaps the claim that UFOs do not represent a threat to national security is true after all, or that there is no evidence they are threatening. But that doesn’t mean we know what they are.
That returns to the core assumption that’s part and parcel of the disclosure movement: UFOs represent physical spacecraft from outer space. Some believe our visitors are friendly, though UFO abductions, if they are caused by the same source, are hardly friendly. If such an assumption isn’t true, and we have no evidence to assume the result, that might be a reason why disclosure won’t happen.
And if the authorities are as mystified as the rest of us, you hardly expect them to admit that fact.
