Bigfoot DNA and Mysterious Disappearances Explored on The Paracast

Special Announcement: The Paracast is heard Sundays from 2:00 AM until 5:00 AM Central Time on the GCN Radio Network and affiliates around the USA, and online across the globe via download and on-demand streaming.

Announcing Our Holiday Fund Raising Campaign: Although ads help cover a small part of our expenses, the income they produce is never enough to pay your humble hosts decent wages. Also, we do not receive any revenue from the ads placed on the show by our network or local stations. So we hope you're able to help fill the gap, if you can, to help us cover increasing server costs and other expenses -- or perhaps provide a little extra cash for lunch and utility bills. No contribution is too small (or too large :). We have a Donate link on our home page, below the logo and audio player. There's also a Donate link on our forums, at the bottom of the sidebar on the right. Or just send your PayPal donation direct to sales (at) theparacast (dot) com.

Attention U.S. Listeners: Help Us Bring The Paracast to Your City! In the summer of 2010, The Paracast joined the GCN radio network. This represented a huge step in bringing our show to a larger, mainstream audience. But we need your help to add additional affiliates to our growing network. Please ask one of your local talk stations if they are interested in carrying The Paracast. Feel free to contact us directly with the names of programming people we might be able to contact on your behalf. We can't do this alone, and if you succeed in convincing your local station to carry the show, we'll reward you with one of our special T-shirts, and other goodies. With your help, The Paracast can grow into one of the most popular paranormal shows on the planet!

Please Visit Our Online Store: You asked, and we answered. We are now taking orders for The Official Paracast T-Shirt and an expanded collection of other specially customized merchandise. About Vanishing Without a Trace
By Gene Steinberg

Despite being pretty much connected to everything and most everyone in the industrialized world, it is really possible for people to just up and disappear. It may require moving to a cabin in the woods, or having someone create a new identity for you -- which is not a legal process -- but if you stay under the radar and don’t have the police on your tail, I suppose you can remain hidden for months, years, or even the rest of your life.

It is also possible to essentially hide in plain sight, getting an apartment in a big city, where your neighbors will usually be unaware of your existence, since they are so busy with their own affairs. Sure, someone might pass you by and offer a casual hello, but it’s not as if there’s any real connection.

If you actually check the possibilities online, you’ll see detailed instructions of how to virtually disappear without a trace. I won’t presume to summarize all the steps here, but part of the solution is not to engage in behavior where you may be tracked. So if you work, you may make an agreement with your employer to pay you in cash, “off the books” as they used to call it. Sure, technically they are supposed to do the proper paperwork to make sure you’re not an undocumented immigrant or a wanted criminal, and that you have a real social security number and perhaps a photo ID. But a small business might decide it’s just cheaper not to bother with all the red tape.

Being in business for yourself helps. You can do odd jobs, such as carpentry, home repair and garden maintenance. Your name may not show up in a directory anywhere, but one customer will tell a friend, and the word gets out. Soon you have all the work you need to survive. And your customers don’t mind paying you in cash, since they don’t have to record the transaction either.

If you have a prepaid phone, don’t keep a checking account, and never use a credit card, you might still have to qualify for an apartment. But perhaps you can sublet a friend’s residence, or find someone with a foreclosure who wouldn’t mind getting some extra money while waiting for the bank to take control.

Indeed, there are actually clubs here and there that do not use cash and all. They survive by exchanging services, a true barter system. You may offer your expertise at home repair, while someone else will let you fill up your shopping bag at the family farm, or maybe just pick up some fresh organic produce from their garden. Another member can handle oil changes and other routine maintenance on your car or truck. No money ever changes hands.

If it all sounds tempting, please remember that it may require giving up your friends and family, never speaking with them ever again. It would be something similar to witness protection, being forced to move to a new city, changing your name, and never revealing your whereabouts to anyone you ever knew. But here there is no government monitoring. You are putting yourself into a sort of personal witness protection, emerging as a totally new person at the other end.

The reason I bring this up is not to sell you on the concept of just getting away from it all -- and I suspect the prospect may cross the minds of many of you even for a brief moment -- but to point out that sometimes people just vanish. It’s not the result of foul play, an alien abduction, or a tragic accident. It’s all done deliberately for one reason or another.

That takes is to a fascinating pair of new books that are being discussed on The Paracast this week. The series has the collective title of “Missing 411,” from author David Paulides, and covers a frightening number of case histories of people vanishing without a trace in national parks, forests, and other possibly remote locations.

The disappearances may involve children or adults, but the results are the same. One second, the person is present, perhaps part of a group of hikers, or just preparing to go off for a short walk or a quick swim. Suddenly they are no longer there, or they never return from their trip.

Once people realize someone is missing, the authorities might be summoned to launch a massive search and rescue effort. That TV show about missing persons was called, “Without a Trace,” but they usually found the subject of their search at the end of an episode. The cases Paulides chronicles usually have the same sad conclusion: The person who vanished is rarely found. Sure, in a few cases bodies are located, or possibly a tiny bone fragment. But there is rarely any evidence of what happened, or how it happened.

While it’s possible someone in their teens or an adult might deliberately arrange to leave home for good, you have to expect that there is a more sinister purpose involved in the case of a missing child.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem as if the U.S. government wants to be very helpful in unearthing the stories of people who disappear in national parks and similar locations. In the course of writing his book, Paulides made requests about possible missing persons through the Freedom of Information Act. Despite the promise that information flow would improve during the current administration, that’s not what occurred.

Of course, Paulides is not about to tell you that these missing people were eaten by wild animals, captured by bigfoot, or subject to some sort of alien abduction. He also doesn’t suggest that serial killers or other evildoers are necessarily involved. Nonetheless, these people mattered, and if they didn’t engineer their own disappearances, their family and friends deserve to know what happened to them. They deserve closure, and we deserve some answers.
