The Contactee Movement Explored The Paracast

Please Don't Forget The Paracast This Holiday Season:
We know you have other priorities, but here's the deal: Some of you have asked David and me about our day jobs. Well, without going into details that you probably don't care about, I have a technology site and a tech radio show -- and we both have The Paracast. We do receive a small amount of revenue from ads, but far from sufficient to put food on the table. So we hope you readers and listeners will, if you can, help make up some of the difference, which is why we humbly and regularly request your donations. Yes, we know money is tight, particularly this holiday season. But no contribution is too small (or too large :). We have a Donate link on our home page, below the logo and audio player. Or just send your contribution via PayPal to sales (at) theparacast (dot) com.

You Can Now Order The Official Paracast T-Shirt: You asked, and we answered. We are now taking orders for The Official Paracast T-Shirt and a collection of other specially customized merchandise. Join Gene and David as they explore the realms of the known and unknown, and hear great stories of the history of the paranormal field in the 20th and 21st centuries.

This Week's Episode: Have Earthlings already met ET? We discuss that issue and the potential impact with UFO and paranormal researcher Nicholas Redfern, author of "Contactees: A History of Alien-human Interaction."

So What's Their Next Excuse?

When Barack Obama was elected President, some of the people who are part of the movement in favor of UFO disclosure made demands to send the White House millions of faxes demanding that he reveal the truth about such phenomena.

Alas, the actual numbers never exceeded the thousands by any estimate, so I suppose that either indicates most people don't care, or the movement doesn't have near the support it claims to have. Then again, I recall the boast from one of the leaders of the related Exopolitics movement that one of their major sites received millions of hits per month. But when I looked at the actual figures that person sent me, it was clear he couldn't read the numbers, and that he actually had maybe 30,000 actual page views over that period. Page views simply means the number of pages served up by the site to visitors.

Well, I suppose there's nothing really wrong with boasting about your popularity, although that seemed a bit of a stretch. In any case, what
s usually clear is that such movements just aren't taken seriously enough by the powers that be to influence their decisions.

Later on there were reports that Obama would actually reveal the truth about UFOs during one of his speeches earlier this year. That didn't happen either, but there's always next year and even more excuses are no doubt in the pipeline.

This doesn't mean that the government doesn't take UFOs seriously. But with an economy in tatters, wars and other pressing issues to confront, unknown things flying in our skies don't seem to command the same level of attention. Of course, if there were mass landings, that situation would clearly change overnight.

But that's not happening.

This isn't to say that I don't want some sort of disclosure. Something strange is going on. Indeed, as The Paracast continues to probe the mystery and government handling of the enigma, it's clear that there are large footprints that indicate the authorities in the U.S. have been deeply involved in various and tawdry ways.

As you will discover when you listen to our episode featuring Nick Redfern, author of "Contactees: A History of Alien-Human Interaction," it seems very obvious that at least some of the contactees were victims of government plots of one sort or another. The late Howard Menger, for example, ultimately recanted his claims of being contacted by ET, asserting he had actually been made an initially unwilling participant in some sort of government experiment.

In his book, Redfern mentions yet another contactee, the late Orfeo Angelucci, who claimed that he was once drugged by military figures in a diner and then went off into la la land and underwent strange experiences. A trip caused by hallucinogenic substances? It sure sounded like one.

None of this should come as any surprise. Most of these events happened during a very paranoid time, when there were fears of imminent nuclear war, and the belief on the part of some people that there were communist spies in every dark corner. So it stands to reason that the U.S. authorities were hot on the trail of evidence of possible enemy infiltration, and I mean the Earthly kind. Perhaps a fair amount of their initial interest in UFOs and the people involved in the field reflected their concern that they might be involved in some strange Cold War game of one sort or another.

Of course, the Cold War is long ago and far away, but paranoia about ongoing conspiracy theories still strikes deep. And so are concerns that governments are still playing mind games with people involved in various paranormal pursuits.

Regardless of the truth or the motivations behind such behavior, I do not expect that we'll be seeing much in the way of UFO disclosure any time soon, outside of some major external event that never seems to happen.

Peace,
Gene Steinberg
