What About the Lost Opportunities?
By Gene Steinberg

Is there a hidden or undiscovered treasure trove of information that remains uninvestigated in areas of high concentrations of UFO sightings?

That’s a question I’ve been wondering about for years, particularly since I met up with a fellow researcher years back that had been undergoing all sorts of frightening events that, on the surface, had only a passing connection with UFOs. It certainly didn’t hurt that I read most of John Keel’s books over the years that also strongly suggested that the phenomenon was far more complicated than many expected.

This isn’t to say the possibility that we’re being visited by ET is necessarily a simple concept. But with decades of “Star Trek” TV shows and movies under our belts, it stands to reason that pop culture has been appropriately contaminated. We have grown to accept the concept of alien life, and that some of it is advanced enough to become spacefaring. So it doesn’t take a great leap of logic to imagine such beings wanting to come here to pay us visits. After all, we’re pretty advanced too. We are important, we hold great wisdom, and why wouldn’t they want to drop by and say hello?

It’s also true that there are a whole lot of unusual events that seem to surround or accompany UFO sightings in a specific area that may, on the surface, seem unrelated. You may not hear about them what with all the attention focused on the local UFO sightings, but, as some enterprising researchers have discovered, if you actually make an attempt to know and respect the local population, you might learn some surprising things that’ll definitely raise the hairs on your back.

Indeed, it appears that, if UFOs are fairly common in a particular region, you might also find loads of reports of alleged ghosts or even strange creatures roaming through the woods. It may be far more common than you think, that is if you’re paying close attention.

Earlier this year, The Paracast featured investigative journalist Jason Offutt, to talk about his recent book, “What Lurks Beyond: The Paranormal in Your Backyard.” In this entertaining volume, Jason focused strictly on the weird events that occurred within roughly 100 miles of his Midwest home. It wasn’t just UFOs, but a whole range of incredible occurrences.

But Jason doesn’t live in some mysterious area of the country that happens to attract the paranormal. It is quite likely that you could draw a circle of similar size in your part of the world and, with a little casual conversation, and of course asking the appropriate questions, conclude that you also live in a very unusual place.

John Keel wrote about “window areas” that appear to attract a disproportionate share of strange events. The recent British sci-fi TV show, “Primeval” used a similar concept to talk about momentary breaks between two realities, where the strange creatures from one would of a sudden pop into the other. Oh, and by the way, “Primeval” is slated for another season, in case the fans in our audience are interested.

On the other hand, if paranormal events can occur within 100 miles of anyone’s home, maybe the “window areas” are simply locales that garner more publicity, hence more attention. The strange events that occur elsewhere are often ignored because few are really paying attention. But if that’s the case, it also means that our strange world is a whole lot stranger than many would of you have suspected.

It also means that, if paranormal events of all sorts are so commonplace, investigators have much more ammunition, and far more alternatives, to consider

So when I suggest that focusing strictly on the possible presence of ET is a limited approach, maybe you now see why.
