Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the “Kelly Green Men”

I recently had the pleasure of being a guest speaker at the Hopkinsville, Kentucky GoblinCon, which celebrates the 1955 UFO incident now referred to as the "Kelly Green Men.” Depending on who you talk to, this event is either thought of as being one of the earliest incidents in the United States of an encounter with diminutive flying saucer occupants, or a bizarre hoax.
If you've been hiding under a rock and have no idea what the Kelly Green Men were (they were actually silver by the way), this was something that really caught the attention of the press at the time due to the fact there were multiple witnesses who pretty much all agreed on what had taken place.
On the evening of August 21, 1955, an extraordinary series of events unfolded at a small farmhouse near the rural community of Kelly, Kentucky, just outside Hopkinsville. What began with the sighting of a strange object in the night sky would soon become one of the most famous — and controversial — UFO encounters in American history.
The Sutton family and several friends were gathered at the farmhouse when visitor Billy Ray Taylor went outside to draw water from the well. Taylor later reported seeing a brilliant, silvery object moving across the sky before descending behind a nearby wooded area. He hurried back to the house and told the others that he had seen a flying saucer. At first, his story was dismissed as a meteor or shooting star.
Then the strange visitors appeared.
According to the witnesses, a small humanoid figure approached the farmhouse. It was approximately three feet tall, with an unusually large head, pointed ears, luminous eyes and extraordinarily long arms. Its appearance was described not as the bright green of later popular illustrations, but as silvery or metallic, sometimes with a greenish glow. The familiar term “little green men” appears to have been largely a product of subsequent newspaper and UFO literature rather than the witnesses' original description.
The frightened occupants barricaded themselves inside the farmhouse. The creatures repeatedly appeared around the building, looking through windows, approaching the doors and, according to the witnesses, even moving onto the roof. Elmer “Lucky” Sutton and Taylor armed themselves and fired at the figures with firearms. The witnesses claimed that bullets seemed to have little or no effect. When one of the beings was struck, they said, it appeared to tumble or bounce away before returning again. The confrontation continued for several hours.
Eventually, the terrified group fled in automobiles for the Hopkinsville police station. Their arrival caused enough concern that officers returned with them to the farmhouse. Police found evidence of gunfire and damage to the building, but no creatures and no physical evidence conclusively establishing the presence of extraterrestrial beings. The witnesses were nevertheless described by officers as genuinely frightened rather than as participants in an obvious hoax.
Geraldine Sutton Stith Sets the Record Straight
Years later, Lucky Sutton's daughter, Geraldine Sutton Stith, preserved her father's account. She said that her father described the beings as humanlike but distinctly different: about three feet tall, with very long arms, pointed ears and glowing, almond-shaped eyes. He told her that they appeared silvery rather than literally green, with a greenish-silver luminescence. He also said that they seemed to skim across the ground rather than walk normally. Most importantly, Stith maintained that her father never regarded the experience as a joke or fabrication.
Invasion of the “Little Men”
The Kelly-Hopkinsville encounter was unusual in its details, but it was far from the only report of strange humanoid beings associated with UFOs. In fact, when investigators began comparing cases from different countries, they discovered a remarkable pattern of reports involving small, oddly proportioned entities, often with luminous eyes, and an apparent connection to landed or hovering craft.
One of the most intriguing clusters occurred in Italy during 1954, the year before Kelly. At Colcerasa di Cing, two boys reportedly encountered three very short, dark figures with flattened heads beside a large object. At Terceira in the Azores, witnesses described two dwarf-like beings emerging from a strange craft, wearing tight-fitting garments and helmets. In another Italian case at Isola, three small humanoids reportedly emerged from a landed object wearing metallic, diving-suit-like clothing. The witness claimed they attempted to shoot at the beings, only to find himself suddenly paralyzed.
There were also reports from France and other parts of Europe involving diminutive humanoids with glowing eyes and sometimes claw-like hands. Interestingly, the investigators compiling the Kelly material noticed that several of these foreign cases contained physical descriptions strikingly similar to the Kentucky creatures.
And America had its own examples. Around the same period as Kelly, reports surfaced of small humanoids in the Cincinnati area, while a woman driving through southern Georgia reportedly encountered four little figures standing in a highway. They were said to have enormous luminous eyes and claw-like hands — an eerie resemblance to descriptions coming from Kentucky.
What is especially gratifying about the Kelly incident is how the local communities have proudly embraced what happened in 1955 and made it an integral part of their local history by celebrating it with yearly events like the Hopkinsville GoblinCon.
The Kelly incident remains suspended between two worlds: one grounded in police reports, contemporary newspaper accounts and multiple witnesses, and another populated by theories of misidentification, folklore and extraterrestrial visitation. Whatever actually came to the Sutton farmhouse that August night, the event permanently entered UFO history — and helped create the enduring American image of the mysterious “little green man.”
