A Chaos Theory

At any point in time, lots of strange things may be happening on planet Earth. People see UFOs, they see ghosts, they see bigfoot. They see all sorts of strange things that those of us who follow such matters continue to catalog.
But we never get very close to figuring out what’s really happening, although you’ve all heard about the various theories.
So UFOs represent physical spaceships from other worlds, perhaps from civilizations that have perfected interstellar travel. Ghosts are spirits of the dead that may have hit roadblocks in their transition to the “light,” the afterlife, and are thus forced — or choose — to hang out among the living. Bigfoot? Perhaps some sort of missing link, or maybe it’s about creatures that pass through a dimensional portal to get here. But they leave again, so we can never quite track them down.
All well and good, but these theories have persisted for years and it’s not that we’ve gotten any closer in nailing down any final solutions.
And I haven’t even begun to consider the possibility of a collective unconscious or one involving co-creation, were we take a part in producing such mysterious events.
But what if it’s all a glitch in the matrix, what we regard as reality?
I think of the time an operating system programmer from Apple told me how bugs were classified as to their impact. So the ones that could cause unstable or unreliable behavior, or a crash, were worked on first. But some minor bugs would never be fixed. That something weird might happen if you did a bunch of things in a special order seven times in a row wan’t important if it didn’t seriously hurt the user experience.
I can think of a few on my iPhone that have existed for years, but you get the point.
So we like to think that science has a fairly good grip on reality, even though there are things we don’t quite understand yet about the way things work. But we want to assume that there’s some measure of order in the way things are. So if you do A, you get B, or C or whatever.
But what if the anomalous events that occur from time to time are little more than bugs in our reality? Compare them to bugs in software. They are imperfections that result in strange or unpredictable behavior, phenomena that can’t be explained because it’s just a set of random mistakes.
Mistakes in reality?
Well, if you assume that a divine being is in control of everything, then you’d want to assume that there is a perfect order in the way things are. Only we have to understand what it is, and if we did, we’d see its brilliance.
Now imagine we are living in a simulation, something created for our benefit — or the benefit of others — by highly advanced beings. But bugs remain, and maybe that’s done deliberately, so we have the phenomena that keeps paranormal researchers up late at night.
Or maybe they are all easter eggs, little things put in there to get our attention. Gamers encounter them because the developers put them there. Movies and TV shows, especially those involving comic book characters, have them all over the place, which allows fans to feel they are sharing special experiences.
I can think of one offhand, and many of you can cite far more. So in the first episode of TV’s “Supergirl,” the girl of steel rescues a plane. The aircraft is flown over a large suspension bridge, which we learn is the “Otto Binder Bridge.” Now Otto Binder was the sci-fi and comic book writer who created the character back in 1959.
I would never have guessed this one had I not met up with Binder a few times years ago in connection with his writings on UFOs.
In any case, what if the paranormal phenomena we are chasing after is all about stuff deliberately put there for our benefit? So, as I’ve said from time to time, flying saucers are here to make us think.
Think about what?
Well, one possibility is how we might react were we to learn that we are being visited by beings from other planets. Or it leads us to consider the possibilities for the future, when humans develop the technology to travel to the stars.
In that sense, UFOs would be deliberate constructs, possibly an advanced form of holography, put there just to see how we’d react to it. Or perhaps how it would influence our society as it develops.
This would posit the existence of a controlling force that creates these experiences for us. We can guess why, of course, but maybe this testing process is part of our evolution as a species. So we need UFOs, and maybe even ghosts and Bigfoot, to tempt our curiosity about the universe in which we live.
So UFOs appear in our sci-fi culture, and it’s true that scientists and engineers have been inspired by some of those stories. Actor James Doohan, best known as Star Trek’s Scotty, would remark how he’d meet up with some of these people and learn that they were inspired by his character to choose these professions.
Consider the Motorola Star TAC clamshell cellular phone that was inspired by the Star Trek communicator.
But what about a transporter and warp drive? Well, it so happens scientists are at work on both, although I’m not about to suggest that you’ll be able to beam somewhere anytime soon, or travel to Proxima Centauri at warp eight.
Now in Star Trek parlance, or at least the version I read before writing this column, that’s the equivalent of traveling 1.402 light years in 24 hours. So the trip from here to that star, a distance of 4.243 light years, would take a little more than three days.
Now that’s the ticket. Engage!
Sure, my suggestion that paranormal events are just software bugs, or easter eggs put there for our benefit, may seem outlandish in the scheme of things. But it sure explains an awful lot about why such weird things happen.
