The Controversial Issues of Exopolitics Debated on The Paracast

Special Announcement: The Paracast is heard Sundays from 2:00 AM until 5:00 AM Central Time on the GCN Radio Network and affiliates around the USA, and online across the globe via download and on-demand streaming.

We Hope You'll Send a Donation to The Paracast: Although ads help cover a small part of our expenses, the income they produce is never enough. Also, we do not receive any revenue from the ads placed on the show by our network or local stations. So we hope you're able to help fill the gap if you can to help us cover increasing server costs and other expenses -- or perhaps provide a little extra cash for lunch. No contribution is too small (or too large :). We have a Donate link on our home page, below the logo and audio player. There's also a Donate link on our forums, at the bottom of the sidebar on the right. Or just send your PayPal donation direct to sales (at) theparacast (dot) com.

Attention U.S. Listeners: Help Us Bring The Paracast to Your City! In the summer of 2010, The Paracast joined the GCN radio network. This represented a huge step in bringing our show to a larger, mainstream audience. But we need your help to add additional affiliates to our growing network. Please ask one of your local talk stations if they are interested in carrying The Paracast. Feel free to contact us directly with the names of programming people we might be able to contact on your behalf. We can't do this alone, and if you succeed in convincing your local station to carry the show, we'll reward you with one of our special T-shirts, and other goodies. With your help, The Paracast can grow into one of the most popular paranormal shows on the planet!

Please Visit Our Brand New Online Store: You asked, and we answered. We are now taking orders for The Official Paracast T-Shirt and an expanded collection of other specially customized merchandise. So Are ETs Really Warm and Fuzzy?
By Gene Steinberg

One popular concept of an extraterrestrial is a benevolent being who has somehow transcended the petty conflicts in which we are always engaged. Whether human-like, or something totally alien in appearance, they have achieved a level of civilization that has taken them far beyond such primitive concerns.

But consider the classic sci-fi film, “They Day the Earth Stood Still,” from 1951 -- and I’ll avoid the pathetic 2008 remake -- where the alien, Klaatu, came here to warn us off warlike behavior. But his carrot invitation also had a stick behind it. If we failed to give up our evil ways, they would have no alternative but to destroy our civilization in the interests of peace. Klaatu was definitely not a warm and fuzzy alien.

The 1977 sci-fi blockbuster, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” depicted aliens that were evidently peace-loving. At the end of the film, a group of Earthlings leaves aboard the alien mothership as a sort of cultural exchange program. I expect that the silly “Project Serpo,” case, which claims such a project really occurred, was probably loosely based on this flick.

But the ideal of the warm and fuzzy alien is the creature in 1982’s “ET: The Extra-Terrestrial,” a gentle childlike alien who is “accidentally” left behind while retrieving soil samples. Now the film doesn’t actually get into the question of ET’s gender, but implies it’s male, so I’ll refer to ET as him for the sake of this column.

Based on his behavior alone, I like to think of ET as a child who might have come here as part of the alien version of space camp. They adhere to a tight schedule, and ET gets sidetracked, so he is left behind. You have to wonder, though, why nobody aboard the ship noticed his absence, and why they never returned until he sent them a distress signal via a crude transmission device. Curious indeed. But it’s still just a movie, so logic doesn’t have to apply.

Now in the Star Trek universe, humans and other aliens are linked together in a “Federation,” where they pursue the path of peace and love, except, of course, when they confront the Klingons, Romulans, and other aliens with questionable motives. The Klingons, in particular, are a warrior race where only the fit survive.

In the UFO field, many of you want to believe ET is only here for peaceful purposes. Maybe they want to teach humans the errors of our ways, so we can give up tribal warfare and follow the path of peace and brotherhood. At the same time, there are potential troubling aspects.

Take UFO abductions. Yes, there may be other explanations that need to be investigated, such as sleep paralysis and other relatively mundane causes. You see, if aliens are actually abducting humans, and engaging in sometimes painful genetic experiments, perhaps even hatching a race of alien/human hybrids, can you really call such acts peaceful?

At the very least, kidnapping a human, even for a brief period, violates our laws. Why would we grant ET a pass? If you or I kidnap someone, we’d face arrest and long prison sentences. Shouldn’t we expect visitors from other worlds to respect our laws?

That sort of behavior, if it truly indicates actions by a race of ETs, is not at all peaceful. It is painful, invasive, and damaging. If such behavior was part of an agreement with Earth authorities, it would make them both complicit in criminal activities.

Peaceful aliens?

In his interview on The Paracast scheduled for August 12, exopolitics advocate Ed Komorek discusses sightings over the centuries that may indicate aliens engaging in airborne fights against other aliens. I have serious questions about the sourcing and authority of some of those cases, as you’ll discover when you hear the episode. But there are still some troubling episodes that indicate less-than-peaceful behavior on the part of aliens against each other.

On the other hand, why assume that, when a species discovers how to travel through space, they suddenly change their ways? Would the awareness of the existence of more advanced civilizations suddenly force us to change the very fabric of society? Or would we take our flaws with us as we travel across the stars?

Well, the advanced humans and aliens depicted in the cult sci-fi show, “Babylon 5” were engaged in the same sort of political and cultural interactions with which we are all familiar. Yes, there were episodes depicting the acts of alien civilizations. But at the end of the day, it didn’t seem as of humankind had become any more civilized because they were able to travel through space, and the same applied to the other races presented on that show. You get a similar picture of war-like alien behavior from another cult show, “Farscape.”

Yes, it’s possible humans will destroy themselves in some sort of global catastrophe before we are advanced enough to travel to the stars. But if we somehow survive and achieve the required scientific breakthroughs to make space travel commonplace, there is little reason to think those breakthroughs will somehow convince us to change our ways. If ETs are already here, we shouldn’t believe they have either.
