This Week's Episode (April 27, 2025): Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear as Gene and cohost Tim Swartz take a break from the paranormal and explore pop culture with Brian Walker, the creator and webmaster of Brian’s Drive-In Theater, where he’s been keeping memories of drive-in films and their stars alive since February 1, 1998. This episode focuses very much on “classic” B-movies, movie serials, and TV shows that focus mostly on super heroes and sci-fi. Brian’s love of films began in childhood with his first Super 8mm projector given to him by his grandmother who also bought him his first film, a four-minute excerpt of a W.C. Fields comedy. Over the last 50 years, he has assembled a film collection from such genres as horror and science fiction, comedy, and action with a special emphasis on B (low budget) movies. Currently calling Morgantown, West Virginia home, Brian is fortunate to live in proximity of a number of still-operating drive-in theaters in the southwestern Pennsylvania area and loves taking his convertible to the drive-in during the warm summer months. My Ufology and Occult Journey — So Far

My career so far in Ufology and occultism has spanned over sixty years, marked by continuous learning, intense investigation, and personal growth. It all started in 1960, when I first became fascinated by mysterious sights in the sky and strange activities reported at certain sites. During those early years, I focused on investigating physical sites where UFO encounters had been reported. These locations seemed to hold secrets that hinted at something beyond our normal understanding, with landscapes that often appeared to whisper stories from elsewhere.
I became especially interested in close encounter cases, which involve direct, often startling, experiences where witnesses saw or interacted with unidentified objects or entities. These investigations weren’t just about collecting evidence — they involved actively engaging with witnesses, examining physical artifacts, and analyzing the subtle clues that might reveal the truth. This hands-on approach allowed me to see firsthand how these phenomena challenge our ideas of reality and push the limits of what we consider possible.
Over time, my work expanded from simple field studies to collaborations and conversations with many of the leading voices in Ufology and occult studies. I had the opportunity to meet and learn from pioneers like Stanton Friedman and J. Allen Hynek, whose work influenced how I viewed UFOs as more than just lights in the sky. I also studied skeptics like James Randi and others who questioned the phenomena, which helped me refine my thinking
Engaging with these experts opened my eyes to different ways of understanding the unknown — some believed in scientific explanations, others saw these encounters as signs of otherworldly beings, and some considered them manifestations of human consciousness or secret technology.
Interacting with thinkers like Whitley Strieber and John Keel expanded my perspective further. They showed me how these experiences could sit at the crossroads of cosmic forces and inner human states, blending scientific inquiry with spiritual insights. Their ideas pushed me to look beyond the surface and consider the deeper mysteries behind these encounters.
At the same time as I investigated the physical and external aspects of UFOs, I immersed myself in the study of occult practices. I sought out disciplined training and deepened my understanding of hidden knowledge that has been passed down through secret traditions and spiritual teachings. I became a highly initiated practitioner, dedicated to exploring the unseen realms and gaining mastery over spiritual energies.
This inner work became an essential part of my investigations, as it gave me tools to interpret bizarre experiences and encounters that often challenged rational explanation. The occult path helped me see that the phenomena I encountered were not just external events but also reflections of deeper truths about consciousness, energy, and the universe. My dual focus on outer phenomena and inner understanding created a balanced approach that shaped how I see the big picture — one where science, spirituality, and personal insight intersect.
Throughout these years, I have not kept my findings to myself. I have written many books and articles that share my experiences and thoughts. My aim has always been to open new ways of understanding reality — blending what we can observe and measure with what we can feel and imagine.
My publications explore topics like physical evidence, symbolism, consciousness, and the possible existence of beings or forces beyond our normal senses. These writings are designed to challenge the standard view that UFOs and supernatural events are purely fringe or false. I want readers to see these as real phenomena that invite us to reconsider what we know about ourselves and the universe.
I have also appeared on numerous podcasts, radio shows, and TV programs, where I engage with audiences eager to explore these mysteries. Sharing my knowledge and insights has been a vital part of my work, helping to bring these hidden truths into wider awareness.
Looking back on this journey, I see my work as part of a larger effort to shed light on the unknown. I believe these phenomena are clues to something greater — a reality that extends beyond what most people accept. Over the decades, the focus has shifted from simple sightings of strange lights to complex discussions about human consciousness, multidimensional realities, and what might be called ultraterrestrial life — intelligences that exist beyond traditional extraterrestrials. My curiosity remains as strong today as it was in 1960, and I continue to explore these areas with passion and dedication. My goal is to serve as a bridge — helping others understand that what we see and experience might be only a small glimpse of what truly exists. Some Semi-Random Elaborations
- The term "Close Encounters" was popularized by J. Allen Hynek, who classified UFO sightings into different categories. "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" involves seeing or interacting with entities, which inspired the famous movie title.
- Stanton Friedman, one of the leading voices in Ufology, was a nuclear physicist before he became a full-time investigator of flying saucers. He played a key role in bringing the Roswell Incident to public attention. After the nuclear rocket program ended, Stan needed a new gig. Just sayin’.
- The idea of ultraterrestrials—beings that exist beyond traditional extraterrestrials — echoes theories from researchers like John Keel, who suggested that paranormal phenomena might be tied to interdimensional entities rather than space travelers. I knew Keel quite well. I have seen, over time, the Ultraterrestrial concept become much more acceptable than it was in the years of my early advocacy of that over ETH.
- James Randi was a magician before becoming a skeptic, and he famously challenged paranormal claims with what he billed as “scientific” scrutiny. His million-dollar challenge offered cash to anyone who could prove supernatural abilities under controlled conditions — no one succeeded, probably because the “conditions” loaded the dice. An Gene and I directly observed, in the case of his take on Ted Serios, he was not above faking a supposed “explanation.”
- Many occult traditions emphasize hidden knowledge passed through secret teachings, much as how ancient alchemical texts were written in symbolic and cryptic language to obscure their wisdom from uninitiated readers. But, if one knows the complex math used today in Quantum Physics, one could think in the future supposed thinkers could say the same of “blackboard physics.” They’d be wrong, as could those who seek to explain the ‘obscurity’ of classical alchemy.
About Close Encounters
