This Week's Episode: Gene and Chris present military veteran and prolific science fact and science fiction author Kevin D. Randle, who returns to the Paracast to talk about the state of the UFO field. The discussion will include the ongoing controversy over the alleged Roswell Slides, involving two possible photographs of a creature that some suggest was an alien recovered as a result of the Roswell UFO crash. But does this story hold up ahead of a public tell-all event scheduled for May 5, 2015 in Mexico City?

Raising Expectations of Disappointment
By Gene Steinberg

Anyone who has been following the UFO saga for a number of years is apt to feel frustrated. After all, very little has been proven about the strange things flitting about our skies. True, they can move real fast and appear to be physical aircraft, and creatures or alien beings are sometimes seen in connection with landed craft. Lots of sightings, sometimes accompanied by photos or videos, but no smoking gun.

The prevailing point of view has it that they are visitors from another planet. This prospect may have seemed an unlikely scenario out of a sci-fi movie in the 1950s, but the theory has become more convincing in recent years. After all, science has confirmed the apparent existence of extrasolar planets, those revolving around other stars. Some may even be in the so-called “Goldilocks” zone where surface conditions may be favorable for life as we know it.

In recent weeks, there have been stories about the possible existence of liquid water below the surface of Mars, and perhaps on other celestial bodies. If the conditions are right, would that mean there is already alien life in our solar system aside from Earth? With all that, it doesn’t take a whole lot to expand that possibility to encompass the theory that ET is already here in some form courtesy of what we call UFOs.

There was also that recent report from NASA’s chief scientist, Ellen Stofan, that we’ll find evidence of extraterrestrials within the next decade. But what form would that evidence take? Microbes found in the Martian waters, or something far more advanced?

Just how would that evidence be discovered? Routine scientific investigation involving space probes, or telescopic images of far-off worlds? Unfortunately, Stofan’s expectations for ET are exceedingly modest. It’s not intelligent life at all. “We are not talking about little green men. We are talking about little microbes.”

We must it always be green men?

But if the universe is teeming with life-bearing planets, wouldn’t advanced civilizations develop on some of them? Is it so far out of the realm of possibility to speculate that some of those advanced aliens would have perfected the capability of fairly quick travel among the stars? If that’s the case, why wouldn’t they choose to visit Earth and other planets from time to time as part of their missions to “explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations”?

And I suppose to ET, Earth might be a strange new world, although it’s very possible our stage of development is merely average or even worse among civilizations in the universe. We have to keep our egos in check.

But it’s also possible NASA is opening a door, with the suggestion that alien life would be discovered. From there it can build to something far more compelling than something that can only be detected with a powerful microscope.

A possible conspiracy theory I’ve expressed from time to time, and I’m not saying it’s true, is that the U.S. government is preparing the population to accept the reality of alien life. All these discoveries about water on other planets, and possible conditions favorable to life as we know it, only go to show that ET is nothing strange, but quite normal. So why wouldn’t they be coming here?

Those who favor disclosure of UFO evidence have it all wrong! We cannot demonstrate that any Earth government knows that UFOs are extraterrestrial. Certainly disclosure can be used as a copout, an excuse not to do any research, or an explanation of why efforts to come up with a final solution have failed. Why work so hard if someone else already has the answers, and merely has to be persuaded to let us in on the secret?

But when you look at the explanations the Air Force and other U.S. agencies have given about UFOs over the years, the emphasis is on potential threats to national security. Yes, they tell us there’s no evidence that UFOs represent the presence of alien visitors, but it’s more about the former. If the presence of strange things in the sky has failed to exhibit evidence of a threat, there’s no reason to pursue it further.

Sure, it’s quite possible that UFO investigations have been funneled to private industry. That is very much part and parcel of how governments do things these days. NASA relies on private companies, such as SpaceX, to build transports to fly into space. State governments rely on private jails in which to incarcerate prisoners. Those with a conservative political viewpoint don’t want governments involved in much of anything aside from the military, and even some of their functions are already the provence of private security companies.

So if there is indeed a UFO secret being held somewhere, perhaps the U.S. government doesn’t have much to do with it. That gives them plausible deniability when they assert they have no evidence that proves they are real. It also means that disclosure efforts are forever doomed to failure. They have nothing to tell us, and a private company is not obliged to tell you anything beyond, if publicly traded, complying with SEC regulations.

But if any government, not just the U.S., holds evidence of UFO reality, would they share it with other governments? Would there be a covert plan to gradually make the populace comfortable with the concept of being visited by ET? Are the reports about the possibilities of water on other planets, and untold numbers of planets orbiting other star systems, part of the natural achievements by scientists? Or is there also a darker purpose in mind?

All that, however, assumes too many things, one of which is that UFOs are alien. It may well be that the secret is far more elusive, and that nobody really knows the answers. But since there are no easy answers, or evidence of a threat, it’s a case of out of sight and out of mind.

UFO sightings continue, but those who have the sightings, or become intensely interested in the subject, are merely dismissed as ET believers. Don’t take them seriously, but that doesn’t explain what UFOs really are, and the solution may not just be elusive, but something totally different from what we expect.

But is anyone listening?
