Gradual Disclosure Revisited
By Gene Steinberg

Every year or so, there’s yet another rumor that we’ll soon see some sort of disclosure that UFOs are real from the U.S. Government. This is the “cry wolf” story that has arisen so often, I wonder why anyone actually takes it seriously, but some of you do. Or at least, some of you hope that it’ll all come true this time.

I suppose that’s the lazy way to solve the UFO mystery. If the authorities know what’s really going on, you demand that they reveal the truth. End of story, or at least if something significant is actually revealed, but that never seems to happen.

Back in the 1950s, the late UFO investigator, Major Donald E. Keyhoe, expected that congressional hearings would reveal the truth. He naively believed that our elected representatives would be honest brokers, and do what they could to force the “Silence Group” to tell what they really knew about the flying saucers.

That opportunity appeared to come in the 1960s when, in the wake of a UFO flap in Michigan, Congress really held hearings that resulted in the creation of the Condon Committee to investigate the phenomenon. Predictably, the results were a whitewash, concluding that UFOs weren’t real, and that gave the Air Force the excuse to shutter Project Blue Book.

I wonder how it felt for Major Keyhoe, and the organization he headed at the time, NICAP, to actually attain their cherished goal without any positive results. Indeed, interest in UFOs fell, at least until the next wave of sightings. But we didn’t have Project Blue Book to kick around anymore.

Over the years, however, there have been various and sundry efforts to force disclosure. Aside from direct demands, some researchers made information requests via the U.S.’s Freedom of Information Act, which did sometimes deliver various and sundry documents. Thousands of documents have been acquired over the years. But no smoking guns were found in the U.S., or among the tens of thousands of UFO-related documents released worldwide?

How would you expect otherwise?

It would also seem silly to actually expect that a secret allegedly held under wraps for decades would miraculously be revealed because a few thousand citizens said it must be so. Oh the optimism!

What if the governments of the world, truly having guilty knowledge that an alien race, or an unknown force, was responsible for the appearance of UFOs, decided to let us in on the secret? Only it wouldn’t happen overnight, but would play out over a period of several decades.

Now before I look at the implications, consider what this might mean. With governments and political agendas changing on a regular basis, just keeping a secret since, say, the 1940s, would be a truly amazing achievement. How would the secret survive unless it had the potential to change the course of history?

Regardless, some suggest that we are being let in, little by little, on the amazing truth behind the UFOs. But rather than cause panic and perhaps serious harm to governments and industry, the revelation will come so gradually it would be near impossible to understand the full scope of the plan unless you took the long view.

The beginnings of disclosure might play out in the discovery of possible life on other planets, such as the presumed presence of microbes on Mars. Sure, microbial life isn’t visiting us in spaceships, but it gets the point across. If the conditions are right on another world, life flourishes.

While the possibility that ET is present on other planets in our solar system seems little to none, what about Earth-type planets orbiting other star systems? Indeed, is it at all possible that the Earth is the only source of intelligent life in our galaxy?

Probably not, because scientists are reporting the discovery of more and more planets orbiting other star systems. Some appear to be in the “Goldilocks” zone, where surface conditions would allow life as we know it to develop. If there are thousands or millions of such planets, not only might intelligent life appear on some, but a few might have developed advanced technologies that allows them to travel among the stars. Of course a few in galactic terms might still number in the thousands or the millions.

No wonder the crew of the Enterprise in the “Star Trek” movie and TV shows is always stumbling upon yet another undiscovered advanced life form. Those sci-fi scriptwriters have a point. How could it be otherwise?

So if UFOs are spaceships, the process of gradual disclosure might just succeed in getting humans accustomed to the reality of the idea. That way, the impact of the final revelation might not be so severe. But that assumes ET is visiting us, and that their intentions are friendly, or at least neutral, and we can only hope they have a “prime directive” not to interfere with other civilizations.

Even if we assume a non-hostile motive, is it at all possible that the “gods” of our ancient history are really visitors from out there? What if we are actually a genetic experiment, the results of creating a hybrid race mixing the terrestrial inhabitants with some advanced race? How would our religious leaders react to that revelation?

But what if the governments of the world were already in contact with “them”? What if they knew “they” were members of an advanced race that coexists with humans, perhaps residing deep in caves or under the oceans? What if they pop in and out again via some sort of dimensional portal?

It may be, of course, that our visitors, whoever and whatever they really are, have a hostile intent. What if the authorities knew we had no defense, but that the end of humanity was imminent? Would the doomed population be told the truth, or would it all be revealed with a single terse announcement as we await the end? Good night and good luck.
