Obvious hyperbole ( All caps, bold text, multiple exclamation marks, and a ragebait claim ).

All nations maintain their own intelligence agencies that work for their own governments in pursuit of their own interests, which in some cases conflicts with other nation's interests. That this would lead to actual military attacks between Canada and the USA is IMO totally ridiculous.

As for Apophis: On April 13, 2029, Apophis will pass safely by Earth. It will come within about 20,000 miles (32,000 kilometers) of our planet. This is closer than many weather and communication satellites, but it is still a safe distance. The rock is about 340 meters wide. People in parts of Europe and Africa will be able to see it with their naked eyes.

Have you not noticed that YouTubers are given instructions by YouTube itself on how to title their videos for views? I'd ignore it if it bothers you. I ignore it. I pretty much know who I am clicking on. The title game YouTube pressures the channels to engage in is not my business. That's how I approach it.

I think he pretty much said all that but the assertion is that Apophis will be used to scare everyone. Did you listen to the video? We'll see.

Yep — I never watched it though. I don't have the budget to add a VPN, besides, last time I tried one, half the time the sites rejected my connection or malfunctioned. Nobody is truly anonymous anyway. I suppose if could help get past certain blocks though sometimes.

I started this thread with very modest goals - to truly suss out what exactly was going on with the Alberta independence - maybe joining the US - rumblings and what Canadians thought of it all. Little did I imagine it would blow up into something truly strange on a global level. I listen to the Promethean Action folks. I find them very informative. Here is Barbara Boyd - one old war horse whose political activism goes back 50-60 years. Always worth a listen and this video is a short 12:00 minutes.

As a Canadian, I've always wondered about what a merge with the USA would financially look like. Especially now with the huge currency gap.

Would we all get an automatic 40% increase? Or would all working Canadians immediately get shocked by the reduced number appearing on their paychecks due to the conversion to the USD ;)

If all products begin selling in USD with the same sticker price that would mean a 40% increase in cost for all Canadians (If their paycheck gets converted).... that wouldn't make sense since it would kill exports, and ruin every one here.

If the amount on paychecks are suddenly in USD and grocery is now in USD, this would work but what about our savings in CAD? (Pensions)

Setting the Canadian dollar (CAD) at par with the USD is the only way. But from that point on, any Canadian company exporting to the US (or anywhere in the world) benefitting from labour paid in CAD and the exchange rate at 40% of USD would suffer or close shop.

Right now, Canadians are kind of forced into cheap destinations for vacations (Cuba is offline for now ;)). With our low value currency, Canada did dump cheap wood, aluminium, steel, etc on the US market... and keep its residents captive to the Canadian market (buy Canadian guys you can't afford anything else)

What Trump is trying to do with his Tariffs is forcing everyone to jump on the same playing field without thinking about how the USA profits from cheap Canadian labor and discounted Canadian resources (40% rebate due to the exchange rate).

Joining the USA and replacing our Canadian dollar with the USD would be absolutely great for pensioners who could finally travel outside Canadian borders with a high value currency, but you can kiss exports goodbye. Canadian business owners would be at par with Americans, no more cheap labor profits and currency rebates for Canadian exporters.

Pegging the CAD to USD value would raise the value of Canadian assets by 40% ... or would it ? ;)
 
@Ezechiel Thank you for your detailed response. Interesting.

Somewhere back in the thread two of us conceded that it is very unlikely for the Canadian government to allow any secession, votes notwithstanding. And unless some sort of special arrangement is created - maybe Canada becomes a US protectorate or US territory? - it's a fairly serious and involved process to become a state - unless they make a special arrangement - though some of the check-boxes are constitutional (I think). The last two territories that became states back in 1959 - Hawaii and Alaska - took 60-70 years from the 1890s.

I have learned a great deal from this thread - like there are actually tariffs between Canadian provinces, which is why there are these crazy pipelines that come down from one Canadian province into the US, travel some distance in the US before scooting back up into another Canadian province - all to avoid the inter-province tariffs.

Fun Fact - 90% of the Canadian population lives within 150 miles of the US-Canadian border. Wild.
