The UFODATA Project — Ask Mark Rodeghier and Leslie Kean

The UFODATA project is designed to create a worldwide network of surveillance stations that would be designed to detect possible UFO activity. You can learn more about the project at: UFODATA Project

There's a further report on the project in a recent article at The Huffington Post here: (Very) Local SETI: The Launch of a New UFO Science

Our guests include Mark Rodeghier, Ph.D., the scientific director and president of the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies and Leslie Kean, an investigative journalist and author of UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go On the Record (Crown Publishing Group, 2010)

We'll be recording this episode on the afternoon of Thursday, November 12.

  1. Are you aware of Chris O'Brien's San Luis Valley paranormal detection project and if so, how does the UFO Data project differ and can there be a coordination of resources for both projects?

  2. Wouldn't someone rich who is interested in UFOs like Robert Bigelow want to contribute to this project, or is the problem that he can't control the findings?
Good luck!

  • Question 1: Are either of you believers in alien visitation, and if not, why isn't the evidence already gathered not sufficient for you?
  • Question 2: If not aimed at gathering evidence for alien visitation, what do you hope that this program will reveal about what issue in particular?
  • Question 3: What provisions have you made to ensure that any evidence will be freely distributed, and not turned into another pay-per-view media stunt, licensed to the highest bidder, sold on DVD, marketing tool?
  • Question 4: Have you considered teaming up with Peter Davenport at NUFORC, who has been seeking resources for a passive radar detection system? If not why not?

My question is : What sort of outcome are you expecting to get by recording UFO's, it might show us a lot more evidence of unknown craft, but it still doesn't tell us the source of this phenomenon. What can your technology in these monitoring stations do to give us a more detailed look at these craft ?

  • Will the UFODATA system be set up for triangulation between pairs of stations?

  • Mark, to what extent has CUFOS received reports of close encounters over the last few years, particularly landings and reports of objects hovering near the ground?
  • Mark and Leslie, what would each of you consider to be the best case you’ve come across that occurred in the last couple of years?

Some questions about Hynek. Do you know what ufo case or project Hynek was working on at the time of his death?
Also, do you have any information about various letters that fell behind Hynek's desk, containing interesting
UFO information? I heard there was a letter from a scientist who claimed he had detected intelligent signals from
Venus? Supposedly, a secretary discovered these letters.

Leslie
What is your opinion of Owen Eichler's research and theory that the Kecksburg UFO was a man-made
GE Mark 2 reentry vehicle?

1) A video filmed in Daytona, Florida in 1991 by two policemen in a helicopter captured an anomalous object which was *only* detected by their on-board FLIR thermal camera; they saw nothing visually in the sky and the local air traffic control saw nothing on their radar either. Would your system be triggered by objects that were not visible but emitted strong heat signatures?

2) How have you tried to prevent any biases you may have about the cause of this phenomenon from influencing the data you collect or how it is collected? Are you just trying to prove that we're being visited by extraterrestrials or are other hypotheses influencing this work?

3) There seem to be a number of different projects at the moment all trying to do the same thing; Project Hessdalen which has been around for a while, Marc D'Antonio's, yours and of course Chris O'Brien's SLV project. Is there any cooperation between these projects? Would it be beneficial to merge them?

4) How do you plan to analyse any data that appears to show anomalous data? Will that analysis be done by your team or externally? Will their be any form of peer-review? Will the full data be released to the public?

5) The team at Hessdalen has taken some great footage which generally seems to be interpreted just as "an unknown natural light phenomenon". How can a project like yours bring about a more meaningful interpretation of strange objects in the sky? How do you plan to demonstrate that any observed unknown structured craft or lights showing seeming intelligent control are not the by-product of superior secret technology deployed by state players for the use of military or intelligence objectives?

6) Anomalous aerial phenomena happening in locations near to highly secretive areas under the control of US state bodies is a well established part of modern day UFO lore. What consideration have you given to taking your data collection units to sensitive military areas and the reaction of the US government or potentially other foreign bodies if you were to do so, especially if you started to pick up unusual activity?

How does UFODATA intend to present it's findings to the general public? Will there be a vetting process in which believers and skeptics can discuss the data before it is released?

Too bad I'm again short of a few days on the deadline. I feel this is really this kind of project that might give a chance to move ufology beyond the neverending debate over witness testimonies. Glad to hear more about it on the next paracast show!! :)
