Having spent some time travelling in the Australian outback, I have been witness to some strange things - Min Min Lights, shamanic magical feats, cloaked helicopters, spirits of ancient tribes .....
I had on a few occasions in my journeys heard tales of "The Screaming Woman Bird"
I presumed this to be a mythological creature, conjured up by local cockies (ranch owners) to scare the "city slickers" who ventured too far off the beaten track.
However in the early 70s, my father and I were camped in a remote area of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. On a early morning hike we had found ouselves on a hilltop watching the sun rise when we heard a blood curdling sceam, the likes of which would cause Jack The Ripper to turn in his grave,
Turning around, we mannaged to get a glimpse of this most odd of creatures, standing a full six feet tall amongst the low scrub of the hilltop.
It had the head of a kangaroo ond an enormous parrot like beak.
Dispite a thorough search of the area, we did not see the Screaming Woman Bird again.
I shall never forget the scream......
