UFO reports long predated the classic era beginning in '47 but I'm not aware of evidence back then besides witness accounts and an occasional photo.

Trajanus, Erich von Däniken's notorious book was written and published in 1968. But, it's not central to the discussion, only mentioned only in passing to emphasize that the earlier contribution of Frederick Hehr.

By now you've had a chance to read the article and examine the evidence. Hehr is just one of those who believed that benevolent aliens from an advanced civilization were shaping life on earth - in advance of flying saucers (or any evidence). It seeded beliefs now that are as strong as that of any religion, and based mostly on faith alone.
