Although the topic is intriguing and worth a thought and then two from everyone, the article is in and of itself spawned from TNYT and are words I would care little to let into my brain, thanks for sharing information nonetheless.
 
Interesting article. I have noticed that everybody and I mean everybody including me argues to win for his/her worldview. It's as if we think in some deep part of our mind/brain that if we don't win an argument with a "poster" who we will never meet in the real world that in invalidates our view of reality. When acually winning an argument just means you are better or louder or have a hymnal that you recite from. We have people who believe in ufo's arguing as if unless they can convince or beat down the other person that the ufo's will simply disapear. We have "skeptics" who pick apart every little spritual thought or idea as if the very fabric of logic and evolutionary strides will be lost if they don't convince them that their view of reality is correct and the only logical view. But, at the end of the day we all go back to our world. We all lie in bed at night and wonder "is there more?" Is this all there is? Man, I hope "my team" wins that game tomorrow. Man, my boss is an ass. Hey I hope that stupid creditor doens't find my new phone number. :cool: I was told something I found wise the other day by a forum member although we have very different views on the spiritual aspect of life. We need to treasure the here and now and don't forget to tell those you love that you love them. We may have been here before and we may be here again. We may disapear into nothingness and in that case in the long run maybe nothing really matters. But, while we are here we need to hold the good close and don't let the bad overwhelm you. But, mainly don't forget that winning an argument might make you feel "right" for a minute but in the end (unless your insane or an E.t. or a Saint) you still have the same doubts and questions that you had before ya beat down that silly faceless poster. :-)
 
I think in short what the article is saying (for whatever it's worth) is that some people argue to win others over to thier way of thinking......because it validates thier beleifs. It makes them feel better and more sure of themselves when others think the way they do.
I know quite a few religious people like that. You HAVE to beleive exactly as they do, or you're wrong, will burn in hell....so you HAVE to be saved by convincing you of your sinful ways. (This is a two for one...they think they've just saved you AND thier beleifs are validated). Just all warm and fuzzy!
Reasoning can cut in every direction when beleifs become involved.
