With loads of good to excellent reviews for the reinvigorated "Star Trek," Mrs. Steinberg and I saw the flick at the Harkins Cini Capri, one of the largest screens in the southwest outside of IMAX. We had a terrific time! This is the sort of film you'll want to see again -- and again. That explains why it got a number one at the box office this weekend.

Ive heard that you dont have to have seen much Star Trek before to enjoy this movie. Can anyone confirm that?

Ive never seen a Trek movie, and never seen a full episode. Im sure if I grew up in a different era I would have been a fan.

Using time travel as a plot device, they are able to alter some of the Trek mythology for the sake of a more entertaining film. And, no, you don't have to be a fan of the series to appreciate the film. Besides, even those who aren't into Trek will recognize some of the familiar phrases, such as "Beam me up."
 
Funny, I've seen only negative comments about it online. Just in passing while reading about other stuff. I've never been a Trekkie so wasn't specifically looking for info. on it.

Ha ha, great observation! There were probably some, but that doesn't mean the idea wasn't floating around already, Trek could have propogated it more and brought it to a wider audience, thus making it culturally acceptable to expect such things when encountering an advanced civilisation, and, hey presto, that's what people experience, like visions from the collective unconsciousness which has an imagination greater than the individual, which can actually condure up physical manifestations, or be manipulated by higher intelligences to conjure up such phantoms:eek:

Man, this has gotten heavy for a thread praising the new star trek film::)
 
Not a huge Trekie but my wife is a big fan. I gotta tell ya even if you are not into Star Trek this is a great stand alone movie. ;) I look foward to the release on dvd and hope they do the movie justice with a great package. My five year old set through it so beleive me it's not boring. I give it 5 stars. :cool:
 
Great movie. Showed a good amount of respect to the source material whilst breaking new ground. Gotta say that I was a bit confused about why they felt they had to include a relationship between Spock and Uhura?? Otherwise, one of the best movies I've seen all year 9 out of 10 vulcan mind melds.
 
This one sets a higher standard than any of the others. all the contradictions to the original series have been resolved in a logical fashion.

so surprised nobody mentioned Nero's take on Kirk's KHAAAANNNNN, with SPOCCCCCCCKKKK!

loved it, hoping for more from the same cast and crew. and the way this was done, ANYTHING in this series is possible, now.

10 saucers out of 5!!

Yes, a thoroughly enjoyable film and quite unnerving watching it in nosebleed-inducing IMAX proportions. My only quibble was with Mr Scot's pet...a worrisome touch of the Jar-Jar Binks, me thinks. Maybe there'll be a transporter accident... :)
 
It is fantastic. I liked everything about it. Especially the alternate reality angle. Now all comparisons can be written off and fresh stories can be created. You get to keep some of the quirks and mythos but completely dispell the those that hamper timeline or event congruency. What a great spin. 9.5 of 10 stars and easily my new favorite Trek movie (Undiscovered Country being my previous).

Yeah I was surprised that you had heard it was bad actually. Ive heard pretty much the opposite whenever its the been the topic of discussion.

Its not hard to find differing opinions on the Internet though. Especially about a movie with a long history.

For anyone thats seen it, and also watched the first season of Heroes... would I be correct in thinking the dude that played "Syler" from heroes plays pretty much the same character in this movie? That guy gets on my nerves for some reason.
 
Me and hubby saw it this weekend, and it was actually an excellent movie! I mean, there were a few places and references where me as an OST Fan chafed a bit and had to let some things slide...but all in all, it is one to see more than once, imo!

It's all part of Spock's ongoing battle within himself between his two sides... this shows that he has *not* totally "gone Vulcan" and gained complete control of his emotions, and sets up future content dealing with this topic more in depth.
