Rich Doty Coast2Coast Interview 2/2005

This show was the first of two total that Doty did with C2C. I found it interesting that he wanted to come on at such short notice, and it was at my suggestion. Significantly, the other appearance was during the SERPO nonsense. His supposed involvement with that story was the reason he stopped talking to me, when I pointed this out at ufomystic. Shawnna at Reality Uncovered probed much deeper into this and got into a very public spat with Doty.

I'll answer anything people want answered about this episode.

All I can say is WOWSERS! What a mess.

I dont even know where to start with all that. If I asked Robert Hastings if he thinks Doty was 'BS'ing that entire interview, well I think know what he would say.

What would you say Greg? Now, 3 years later?

It was amusing hearing Art trying to grapple with it all (he seems great BTW - way better than Noory... "Do you think it was angels, Doty?"), and it was pretty obvious that he didnt really buy it all near the end there.

I find it hard to believe that Doty would actually say all that stuff against the wishes of hi former intelligence employers, despite what he said about not caring etc.

Interested to hear what other people think of the interview.

Greg, I read your article re Serpo, and was surprised to see Hal Puthoffs name. Was he implicated as a possible source with Doty?

I didnt know he was ever in the disinfo game.

This is the interview Don Ecker mentioned on this weeks show...

I havent listened to it yet, but it will definitely be the next thing I get to after this weeks Paracast!

Not bad... although, I'd have to say, I often feel slimed (a la Ghostbusters), whenever I hear Art Bell speak - I don't know what it is about him. Anyways, he did press Doty for much of the show, and that's good.

As far as Doty is concerned - what's that old line: once a dis-info specialist, always a liar? And if not, then why the change of heart... Bennewitz took his own life, after all.

If Doty was such a good officer, and counter-intelligence agent, he shouldn't care what happened to Bennewitz. It baffles me why Doty would bother talking, then or now, unless of course, he's been re-activated.

Havent had the time to listen yet, but Im sure Ill have some Qs:D (like usual).

BTW what was the date/year for the second C2C interview Doty did?

found the ep. Doty and Bill Ryan (lol) are on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th hours.

What a bunch of drivel... and it only gets worse when Noory brings in a wacky science reporter who jumps in at the end of the show proclaiming why the Serpo story is not only plausible, but actually possible.

Don't waste your time on this one.

lol, you know who that science reporter is right? Richard Hoagland.

Yeah that Serpo show was just a load of dog shit. Im really getting a sense of why Robert Hastings hates Doty so much... after listening to him on those two C2C eps, the guys just lies lies lies likes he needs to lie as much as breathe in order to live.

I wouldnt trust that guy as far as I could nudge him.

Bennewitz took his own life, after all.

I wasn't aware of that. He died in 2003 or 2005 (sources vary), which was more than 20 years after the incidents where he wound up in an institution for 'exhaustion.' Can you cite your source that he took his own life? Thanks in advance.

He absolutely did. Greg Bishop would be my source but its one of those things that Ive heard many times all over the place.

Ill try to track down at least one reference.

Well, eff me. I cannot find a SINGLE reference to Bennewitz committing suicide. Either on Gregs blog or Bennewtiz' wikipedia page or numerous other references retrieved through google.

I swear Ive heard it that many times. Ill keep looking.

Yeah, surprise. I did the same thing. I think there are some blog references, but I can't yet find something definitive. The thing that bothers me is that he died over 20 years after the fact. So even if he DID, is that tied in with events in 1979-1980? No doubt he was screwed over and pushed to the edge--that's not at question, but it kinda reminds me of Dolan's stuff on strange deaths....

Bennewitz did NOT take his own life, and I would not have said that he did. I wonder who started that rumor? He died quietly in a hospital at age 75 three weeks before I went out to New Mexico on my first research trip for Project Beta. He had been ill for many months. You can search the local Albuquerque newspaper obituaries:

Paul F. Bennewitz, born September 30, 1927 passed away June 23, 2003. He is survived by his devoted wife, Cindy, of fifty-four years: loving sons Brad; granddaughter, Shanna: son, Jeff and wife, Kelly: step-granddaughter, Brandy; great grandson, Jeffery: son, Matt, all of Albuquerque. Paul joined the Coast Guard at seventeen during WWII. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Sr. and Stella Bennewitz; brothers, James Richard and Norman. Paul was an accomplished aerobatics pilot and guitarist. He was founder of the family owned and internationally known Thunder Scientific Corp. The family is most appreciative for the special care of Presbyterian Hospice and especially his nurse, Sheryl Dixon. A private family memorial has been held. He loved his sons; Dad will be greatly missed, we love you. Cremains will be interned in the Veterans National Cemetery in Santa Fe.

I think that the stress of the events of the late 1970s and '80s almost certainly contributed to his bad health.

The mistake many people make is that Doty is not worth listening to. If you know enough about what he is talking about, it is interesting to try and figure out what he is spinning, what he is making up, and what checks out. Of course, it takes patience and an almost obsessive interest in the subject matter to bother with it! This also applies to other personalities like Robert Collins. No, it does very little towards a solution to the UFO riddle, but I happen to find this cubbyhole of the subject interesting.

There is the possibility that someone or some organization in the US Government has good info on UFOs, but any sort of "disclosure" is almost impossible. The mistake many UFO enthusiasts make is to look at the government/ UFO issue as black or white. The game that is played is far more subtle than that. I can't emphasize this enough. If you get deeply involved in it, looking at it as an all-or-nothing proposition is certain to drive you nuts, or make you angry. Decisions as to who is "good" or "bad" closes you off to so many more opportunities to learn who is doing what, and why. An agnostic mindset will get you much further, even though the ultimate "answer" remains out of grasp. You have to be OK with that to make any headway. The game involves such elements as stowing your ego, stocking data points away for later, asking the right questions and listening very carefully. Snap moral judgments sometimes close the doors before they're open.

Some researchers get upset over the lies without bothering to check into the stories behind them. They seem to accept the possible disinfo stories when it agrees with their bias, and reject everything else, even though there is no evidence to support it. For example, Robert Durant's review of Project Beta accepted Doty's story (from the Bell program) that he saw films of the Roswell wreckage, but rejects the rest of his statements. See my back and forth with Robert Hastings on another thread for more of this sort of thing.

As for Hal Puthoff, he was not involved in any disinfo schemes, as far as I know. He was a member of the "Aviary" because of his connections to the intelligence world and his keen interest in the UFO subject. For all I know, he was told to report on Moore and any other civilian UFO researchers with whom he had contact. He has appeared to be coy and reserved in the few communications we have had over the years.

BTW, I was the one who pressed Doty during the Bell program by bringing up things that Bell didn't know about, such as the Linda Howe episode. What happened was that I realized that it was a golden opportunity to get Doty on the record, even though not much of real substance was discussed or revealed. The real value of that interview was that Doty chose to appear at all. I was also the one who suggested that he appear on the program in the first place, by asking him if he wanted to do it, and suggesting to Bell and the C2C producer that it might be a good show.

Many of these issues will be discussed on my show this Sunday night (5/31 8-10PM PST at killradio.org.) It will be recorded for later posting at the radiomisterioso.com site, but no time frame on that.

Sorry Greg. My mistake.

Did he attempt suicide at one point in his life?

BTW, that Bell interview with yourself and Doty was super fascinating to me, and I believe I am indeed one of those people that is interested enough to listen to this stuff. I had a problem with the Serpo interview though, as it seemed like a complete lie fest, especially compared to Dotys interview with Art which felt a lot more truthful.

I guess we can surmise one solid fact and a definite lie Doty told on the Art Bell show... that fact being that Doty is definitely still in the disinfo game, and the lie being his adamant denial of that when Bell pressed him.

Does that seem about right?

I say that because of the Serpo stuff he was pushing and likely started (as "Anonymous" and "Paul McGover").

Thanks for clearing up the matter of Bennowtlitz, Greg. While I'll be damned if I can remember where I heard it, I too thought he'd taken his own life.
As per Doty et al, my own pet theory is that they are are "in the scene" for no reason other than to muddy the proverbial waters. Indeed, it is their collective job to inject the most absurd ideas into the discussion and dirty the whole pool. But that's just my theory.

This a fascinating interview with Doty. It's well worthwhile. I wish Bell would have just shut up, though. He really got in the way and tended to go on tangents. I would much rather have just listened to Bishop and Doty.

I think I got suckered by his comments...my apologies, and you're right, Doty isn't worth listening to; he cuts back and forth too finely for me to find anything worthwhile within his lies.

Although I can't imagine spending hours upon days trying to glean anything useful/credible from that spook's spin, I'm glad someone like you is dedicated enough to follow up, Greg.

And thanks for the clarification!

Actually Greg is saying the opposite there. That Doty IS worth listening to as long as you know just who and what youre listening to.
